Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Rick,
Coming along great! Since your sheet metal doctor has got the whole rear of the car dissected how does one know that the new panel is welded in correctly was there a vertical measurement taken off the floor at the tail panel. If it's off a half inch up or down could cause issues later on. Sheet metal work like this is very intriguing to me and I'm always trying to learn something is the only reason I'm asking. What's the plan with the old tail panel? I need the two vertical braces on each side of the trunk latch. Interested in selling them? |

We won't do any welding until there is a trunk lid in place to use as a fit guide as well as mocking up the quarters. This is all a first time for me, so I am surmising some of this, and will defer the actual procedure to my "Dr". I'll take pics again as he goes about the final fit. I have to admit, as Kurt said, that this is fun to learn as the car goes through a nearly complete restructuring. The 2 vertical braces off my old tail panel may not be any good as it was pretty rotted back there, but if there is a good one or both I'll let you know. |

I found no indication that the car had a side stripe when I stripped some of the added paint off the quarter panel. My plan is to build the car pretty close to how it came originally. I do like the bright side window trim on a black car, but this one didn't come with it. I like the correct small white-lettered Goodyear Wide Tread, that would have been used in `69. |

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
While I was at the MCACN show yesterday, my steel Dr. was hard at work replacing some more rusty sections with pieces we cut from a donor car that Bill Hamel is parting out that had a tree drop on its roof and front end. The car is inside at Wheelhop's shop, so Jim is letting us go and get what we need.
Thanks Bill and Jim for the great metal parts source. Eric also welded up most of what we had installed last week, so that took a bit of time. All-in-all, some more great progress to get the welding and replacing of the package tray, and having to clean the extra metal from the donor pieces to ready them for the install. Quarter panels will be soon! It will be a couple weeks now before he can come back, with the Thanksgiving holiday being part of next weekend. The package tray area had some fairly serious rot on the driver side that worked its way into the inner structure behind the quarter panel, so we need to replace that before replacing the whole package tray, even though the package tray itself was salvageable. The piece off Bill's parts car is so clean, that we decided to use it long as we're at it. Outlined area here shows the rust in the structure of the driver side sail panel area. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...f7180_copy.jpg Clearing out the area to get the section removed. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...psf23f3349.jpg Removed at the spot welds http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps7e1292bd.jpg New donor piece being installed http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps67b89572.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps8fbfdeef.jpg Goodbye old package tray http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...pse29a4034.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps2e990a46.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps59ec6853.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps4cac1e4e.jpg Hello new package tray, oh so much nicer. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps7fa6ea8b.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...ps2a7052dd.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...psb2abc17b.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e4...psba220abe.jpg |

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Not really anything has changed visually this week.
Eric did a ton of welding to complete all the replaced sections. I went over to Wheelhop's shop to remove the driver side taillight section, and cleaned out the cut-up one on the trunk section that we installed a couple weeks ago. We will wait to do the final fitting of that until the quarter panel is getting mocked up next Saturday. I will be cleaning and prepping all the areas that are hidden by the quarter panels, and priming them with some DP90 this week. All stuff that can't be reached after the panels are on. Body shell will be put back on the frame after that, then the new NOS quarters get hung. Should look much different, and I will have many pics of that. |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
A well executed plan
Thanks for the update. Dan |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
My computer crashed a few days ago, so having to access through my wife's computer, and I can't up load any pics because of it. Possibly get the main computer fixed this week.
Did a few repairs to prep for quarter panel fit-up. Had to rebuild the end of the rocker on the outside driver side as it had been whacked off when they cut the wheel opening for slicks. Several other minor preps made before taking the body off the rolling cart, and put back on the frame. After tightening the body to the frame we fitted the left quarter panel to the car. I'll post pics soon as I'm able. |

One vote for B90 trim, it makes the whole car for me!!

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
I don't really care for the b90 trim on the post sedan. I look at these cars as a striped down nothing fancy (as they are ) bare bones muscle car. The trim adds some fancy bright work that just seems out of place. Just my two cents

Mike,
NOW here is a fellow '69 Chevelle Enthusiast that <span style="font-weight: bold">Get`s It!</span> I agree 100%, the B90 is a beautiful trim package trim that looks great But these cars were indeed the Strip-Down Plain Jane Models.....If the car was ordered as an L78....it was usually going to do some drag racing and you can bet they hardly had any options. The fewer the Better! I like Mike`s two cents! Dan |

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
If a car got the D96 accent stripe did it automatically come with wheel well trim? I was looking at my shipper sheet it shows D96 but no B96. I know my car came with wheel well trim from the factory. I know my shipper is missing the color on it I whited it out on the copy since it is blue now. Didnt need all the drama when it was shown with the car.

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
John,
All 1969 SS396 Chevelles got the wheel opening moldings, with or without the D96 stripe option. They are listed on your shipper copy, as part of the SS396 equipment. |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
ok thanks, My Nova has that trim and wish it didnt looks much better with out it
|
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Even though I like the bright trim on the post sedans, this particular car came without it originally, so I will leave it that way.
I have another one of these waiting in the wings to restore, and it came with the B90 trim, is an L78 car, and will get the trim put on it when done. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">But these cars were indeed the Strip-Down Plain Jane Models.....If the car was ordered as an L78....it was usually going to do some drag racing and you can bet they hardly had any options.
