The most expensive wristwatch ever auctioned is this bespoke Patek Philippe watch, which went under the hammer for an enormous $31 million in November 2019 at a charity auction in Geneva. Completely one of a kind, the Grandmaster Chime watch has a black dial and a rose gold dial which can be flipped.

The Hawaiian island of Lanai, a 90,000-acre paradise, was purchased by Oracle founder Larry Ellison in 2012 for $300 million, making it the most expensive island ever sold. Ellison now owns 98% of Lanai, while the remaining 2% is owned by the state. The entrepreneur has since invested another $450 million in projects on the island, which houses two five-star hotels and a town of 3,200 people.

The most expensive boat in the world is thought to be Roman Abramovich's Eclipse, a 533-feet long megayacht which was bought for $472 million in 2011 but is believed to be worth $1.5 billion today. Complete with 25 luxurious cabins, an onboard nightclub and two swimming pools, it's certainly not your average yacht.

The most expensive private residential property in the world is the colossal Antilia, a 27-story skyscraper in Mumbai owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. The property, which is valued at $2 billion by the Guinness World Records, has 400,00 square feet of living floor area, and derives its high cost partly from the highly expensive area in which it's built – Altamount Road, where one square foot of land costs on average between $1,050-$1,100.

Did you know that there was a four-wheel drive Capri? Well, we’d forgive you for not knowing, as it never got beyond the prototype stage. Just 17 were built to demonstrate the possibility, but just one it seems survives, and you’re looking at it.

1963 - It's thanks to Douglas Engelbart from the Stanford Research Center in the United States that we now have this indispensable device. Did you know that the very first mouse was made of wood?

Stephanie Kwolek, a scientist at DuPont, created this bulletproof material in 1965 with liquid-crystal polymers. Today, Kevlar is used in all sorts of applications.

What luck! If you were born in 1966, you share your birth year with this game-day snacking staple. Doritos have been popular from the start. Nevertheless, Frito-Lay completely redesigned them in 1994 for the astronomical cost of US$50 million.

They were big, heavy, and expensive, but we can't live without them today. Motorola employee Martin Cooper had the honour of making the first call on April 3, 1973. Whom did he call? The Bell Labs headquarters in New Jersey.

The first word processor wasn't WordPerfect or WordStar, but rather Electric Pencil. After it entered the market in December 1976, its ease of use made it quite popular.

In 1981, the newly coined “Internet,” once used only by the American Army, became available to a wider network of scientific and academic communities and as they say, the rest is history.

No fewer than 10 official versions have followed the release of the first Windows operating system in 1985. It marked the moment when many users moved away from the keyboard and embraced the mouse, finding the interface more user-friendly. We've come a long way from MS-DOS.

1992 - The first text message, “Merry Christmas,” was sent by a former developer at Sema Group Telecoms, Neil Papworth, to Vodafone director Richard Jarvis. At the time, phones did not have keypads, so the message was sent from a PC.

It's no mistake. Netflix really did first appear in 1997, when you still had to connect to the web through a telephone line. Customers ordered DVDs from Netflix that were then delivered by mail. Today, the cinema giant produces content, earns billions of dollars, and has transformed the cinematographic and television industries. Netflix has also gifted us with binge-watching and sleepless nights!
