I ordered a 55 gallon drum of that stuff to try with my pressure washer: rust remover I ordered a couple of 5 gallon tubs last year and have used it "as per the instructions"... soaking for extended periods of time (30 minutes to 2 days). How can you use this with a pressure washer? My understanding is that there must be either immersion or constant contact with the metal in order for it to work its magic. on a couple project cars here at my shop [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
There's a video on their website showing the shower/recycle method that works with a garden hose, bottle sprayer and/or pressure washer. It looks like the trick is to recapture and recycle the solution for multiple "showers" of the same area of treatment. I forget the product name of the derust/degrease stuff we use now at work, but I'm always looking for a better way to keep 45 semi trucks/trailers looking decent [especially at our Alaska facility].

I'm such a fan of original cars. They can be restored at any time, only the lucky ones will SURVIVE the test of time, some not as well as others.
Fast forward 25 years and imagine if everyone wanted "polished nickels", there would be very, very few survivor type cars. Pebble beach has recently instituted a survivor class, clearly a movement in the right direction IMHO. I'd plead with anyone to save what is original on their cars. Just my .02 cents. I'll say again, what an amazing find, it may not be as nice as the Harrell Chevelle or the RS COPO but it is truly a survior in my books, keep it that way. |

Stained, a tad ratty, but still there after 40 years*. Because the stock 396 is a close fit the indentation from the L35's air cleaner lid is deeply pressed into the insulation. Oh, and the light surface rust around the hood edges has gotten compliments at shows too. At one show a few years ago a guy said to me in a serious, solemn voice, "Don't change a thing." *Hey, it's an 03C car, third week of March 1967. Happy 40th Birthday to my Camaro! She looks better every day. |

I have used that rust remover , it works well but takes time , you have to submerge parts in it or pump it in a recycle low pressure tub .

I bet the radiator is the for comparison only. Dana would not give the radiator back. Even if they did it would not have kept up with the car.

Jason...the Dana paperwork indeed shows that the original owner got the take-off parts back, so THAT IS the original factory SB radiator!

Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
I **think** I remember Bert saying the additional shipping expense from CA to HI for the loose take-out 350 SB motor was too pricey, so having no need for it...it was discarded. The original factory hood wouldn't fit in the trunk either for shipping to HI, so it's a gonner too. I'm experiencing the same riddle now...trying to arrange shipping for the "roller" car, while the engine is still on an engine stand...it nearly doubles the shipping quotes I'm getting.

It is an automatic SB radiator. If you look closely you can see the trans cooling inlet and outlet on the right side.

Besides being probably the most significant find in recent memory, what amazes me most is how it sat in the same spot through four decades-the owner HAD to know the value, did nothing with it,and being a relatively known item, noone managed to persuade him to sell it sooner?.To the victor! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
The story goes that the original owner, Mr Tatilian, wanted a rallye green '68 Camaro and Cormier Chev was reluctant to dealer trade with Dana Chev for the last remaining rallye green Camaro on their lot. [I think rallye green was a Camaro "ONLY" color for Chevrolet in 1968]. Mr Tatilian, with his co-signer, made a deal with Cormier Chev during the summer of 1968, then dropped it at Dana Chev after saving enough to pay-off the bank note and sponsor the 427 conversion in spring of 1969.
My wife and I were married in 1968 at a church 4 blocks from Cormier Chev dealership in Long Beach, CA. SS |

Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
I was looking at a picture of my son from the Lowe's Auto Fair last year and just remembered a car we saw there. It was a Shelby Mustang, I believe a 68. The car was shown "as found". It looked much like your car, although together and running. There was a display sign describing all the "find" details. One of the lines was "restored this car is worth X dollars, as it sits, priceless", or something close to that. I wish I had pictures of the car. I really just wanted to let you know that cars like yours are being shown as is. Anyone can restore a car and make it 110%. Cars like yours rarely turn up and can't be duplicated. In your case I would love to see you start a new trend, "preserved". Just put it together, clean it up, and preserve it. Leave it as is so everyone in the future can see "the way it was back in the day". Right now it is a time capsule, you can't go back to that. Personally I would love to go to a museum and see this car as is rather than one that was restored. It would be nice to say to my grand kids "that is the way they did it back in the day" and show them a literally perfect example. Right now your car is 1 of 1, no one will ever(as we know now) have one just like it. My vote is leave it alone and preserve it, not to restore.

Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
Not that its any of my business, but if I had to guess I'd say that the seller had a pretty good idea of what the car was worth, and Steve stepped up.
Regardless, its a great piece, and I agree that there's something to be said for considering preserving it "as-is." Some of the neatest pieces at the car shows are the unrestored ones that are showing their age and still sporting their battle scars. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif |
Re: DANA "427" Camaro found...thanks to Jeff Chlupsa
I couldn't agree more Rainer.
I've always thought that once a vehicle is fully framed off rotisserie restored,it stands out more in a residential garage among daily drivers we use to commute in everyday, and rightly so. But put that same fully restored vehicle in a concourse venue among others getting the same treatment, and they all become a routine gentle blur of sorts after spending many long hours at any great carshow. Now introduce a single vehicle like this "as found" one into that same venue, and it's a respectful eye opening change of taste that puts it all into prospective and cleanses the pallet. |
