The Nova did have a 350 in it. I have not seen the car for about 10 years. I will have to ask if it is still around.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...evy/a018-1.jpg [/ QUOTE ] Scott Sullivan's car from 1979, right? I think Hot Rod recently credited this car as being the "first" Pro Street car? (Can of worms, I know.) Maybe they called it the first PS car that was actually driveable and reliable. This car knocked people's eyes out when it first came on the scene, much the same way Rick Dobbertin's '65 did soon after. |
Re: OLD RACERS
Yep that's Sullivan's Nova...
They may have called his the first pro street car Bill...but I have pics from 1979 at the Street Machine Nationals West that show a 1970? Nova that has the narrowed rear, gas tank in the trunk and big engine up front...at least on the west coast this guy was considered to be the first person to go the pro street route... |
Re: OLD RACERS
I grew up with a guy named Fred Bieler (sp?) Everyone called him Crazy Freddy for obvious reasons. He built a bunch of hot cars and did custom bodywork.
Freddy drove like a wild man, and Freddy was an innovator - In the late sixties Freddy took a '62 Dodge with an 413" automatic and mated it with a wrecked Freeport modified. He installed the narrowed Halibrand quick-change with a set of 6 something gears. He took 2 stock rims and cut and welded them together and stretched a 10 or 12 inch racing tire on them. As I remember the tire looked more like a tractor tire then anything else. It was up high in the back with these monster tires tucked underneath! Blasts down Hempstead Tpke were amazing with the uncorrected speedometer reaching over 100 mph in first with those wild gears. Freddy also cut the inside out of the top of the back seat from side to side. He installed amps and a speaker from a movie theater in the trunk facing through the rear seat fabric. He cut the center out of the dashboard and installed a tv speaker up front. Pulling into Wetsons with the 8-track cranked up always brought everyone outside! Freddy was from Brooklyn, but grew up with his Uncle in Elmont. The last I saw of him was in late '70 at the Twilight bar in Elmont. He arrived in a wheelchair with some sort of 2 cycle motorcycle motor propelling it. He took off down Meacham Ave and I went in the Army shortly afterward. I never saw him again! I would love to know what else Crazy Freddy dreamed up from there! |

Re: OLD RACERS
[b] Found this framed memento while going through some stuff today.
Westhampton Drag Strip paid $10 for eliminator back in '68 - may not sound like a lot now, but back then that bought better then 30 gallons of 100+ octane gas! That's my '66 L72 SS Impala in the picture. I had a big problem ripping the rear control arms off the bottom of the car when I ran slicks. I devised those backwards ladder arms with a set of air bags and it pretty much kept things in place. To look at it now, it sure looks pretty strange! Ran station wagon, big block with a/c springs in the front for that gasser look. With the stiff and high suspension the ride got real interesting at the end of the strip, about 200 feet past the traps there was this noticeable dip in the track surface. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...tos/Imp508.jpg - |

Re: OLD RACERS
Hi,
Can you tell me anything more about the Dancing Bear Corvette or its owner/driver Chip Banney? Chip was a friend of mine back when he owned a Gulf station in Brooklyn. I was only 16 at the time but I used to go to the races with him and help him with the car. I would like to contact him if you or anyone else might help me. Or even if you can direct me to more photos. I believe I was there when this picture was taken at Atco. Michael..... |

Re: OLD RACERS
I would not doubt that the car is 1 of the 4 ZL1s sold in FL. from Jim Rathman or Indian River Chevrolet. I believe one of the cars was Hugger Orange. Just a Thought https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif
|
Re: OLD RACERS
The ZL-1 list shows #64 as a Hugger Orange automatic being sold at Indian River Chevrolet. The pic shows this one as a SS/CA car . Possibly the same one ?
