Re: Barrett Jackson.....

It's interesting! There seems to be quite a lot of
emotional sentiment about this years auction. Someone asked
about being bothered about Ford prices going up. More power
to them. I hated the Ford guys growing up and went after
them all the time. It was that "Genuine GM" thing! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

Well, we do eventually grow up and I even own a couple of
Fords these days. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

The Chevy prices did seem to be down a bit. I'd like to
know more about that. Is it saturation time for BBC's?

Lastly, I'd personally like to know more about the behind
the scenes goings-on that may have happened. Craig Jackson
looked very stiff and uneasy last night. Anyone care to
talk about what they may have seen or heard? Heresay isn't
a problem so long as we know it is heresay......

Steve - That scene was unbelieveable! It looked to me like they (BJ et al.) would do anything to milk a stone. I can just imagine what was coming out of the assistants mouth at the time. The kids mom looked disgusted before finally taking her son away from him.

[/ QUOTE ] That sums it up pretty well for me Belair. Everyone has thier own opinions based on what they want to believe . Many people want prices to drop so the "investors" will go back to the stock market and there will be more cars and cheaper prices for the "enthusiast" , the only problem with that is, is that the "enthusiast" will still only want to pay half of market price anyway, so most still wont ever buy a car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Craig had some major duds. I'm sure he thought the Von Dutch Bus would have sold for at least a million. Some Von Dutch stuff sold for major money earlier this year. The music memorabilia went for almost nothing. The low mile Hemi Cuda's seemed like bargains.

Did anyone notice Carrol Shelby yank the microphone away from the sleazy sunglasses guy? Could that guy fit the car salesman stereotype anymore?

I think we all have a basic need to have our likes and dislikes validated by people we respect. That's just human nature. I can assure you I would prize certain cars far more than most of you.

For instance: I bought a barely used cream '67 GTO, auto and no a/c. $2,500.00 It came with the standard styled steel rims and redlines. My buddies called it a girly car back then but I loved that car. It was fun and had just enough power. I later put American ..... seems like they were the old bottle spokes (is that what we called them?) and with the redlines it was a beauty.

If some other nut felt the same way I do and a perfect one rolled on the stage, and of course we would both have done our due diligence, the final selling price would probably shock the hell out you guys! It would hardly be a representative price for '67 GTO's though.

During the times that I have watched the BJ auction I've seen many of the big collectors from past years but, couldn't help but notice that "Ralph" (the big guy that was involved in the bidding war for the Future Liner last year with Ron Pratt) has not made an appearance. I guess that whole mix-up with the Future Liner last year didn't sit too well with him.

Re: Barrett Jackson.....

All I can add to this is that I have several customers that will step up and pay record prices today for NO BS FACTROY STAMPED FACTORY DOCUMENTED soild lifter big block corvettes. There are VERY FEW that come up in a venue like this. I know of many REAL cars but no one is willing to part with them beacuse the are almost impossible to replace.
I also have a customer who is looking for a 67 gt 500 boss 429 and boss 302 who will be paying a higher price because of this.
So if the bubble has burst or has a slow leak...and anyone wants to sell thier 67 435 Corvette for 100,000.00 let me know I'll buy 10 of them today.
This all boils down to the real cars will always bring very strong prices when selling
It was just last year when B/J was setting record prices and evryone said who will pay these prices, that I posted about some of my customers that paid twice the going price of a restored for a car needing restoration ( but these cars had multiple pieces of factory documentation and born with drivetrains).
Even when things change they still stay the same (if you know what I mean!)

L88, does anybody know this car? Were there some flaws, or was it bogus, 240 and very lackluster bidding raises a question in my mind.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve, that L88 while advertised to have its OM did not have its original stamp. The bidding was real and TM was on the car at 230K My take on the auction is that the market is becoming more selective and educated and will not open a blank checkbook for a car with issues. While I cannot speak for the e bodied mopars which seemed to down 50% vs last year I can speak for the 67 435 models and the L88 Corvettes. Prices for the 67s were down 20% vs last year but there was not one 435 car that I saw that had its original motor so while prices to the casual observer seem to be lower I believe that it is a reflection of the quality of cars that were present. I know of several recent sales of great 435s and three 69Lss that sold for huge$$$ so I believe that great cars are still selling for big money and will always bring big money. Also I think if the folks at BJ keep raising their commission rates and offer no reserve only auctions that the quality of their consignments will continue to plummett. IMHO

Steve,
People probably are more discriminating these days. I suppose there are exceptions to every rule because I remember when this thing was a pile of parts with only a few being original. Does it have even one major component today that it was born with? It is, I believe, the only L88 known to be delivered with power windows.

I know a few guys lost huge huge money last night.. Its the chance you take if your doing this for investment/job and most know that. What REALLY pisses me off is that the fact Craig himself was hyping up a couple cars saying they were good cars and extremely undervalued blah blah blah, when infact they were well known piles of crap! its all about who you know and how good of a blo* job you can give PERIOD. I saw a lot of shady stuff this weekend and really dont know if I personally will sell there again. It seems MONEY is the only thing that runs that circus 10% buyer commission this year?? when is enough enough?? I think you'll see Mecum steal the spot light coming up soon.. Much more of a TRUE HOBBIST and down to earth guy and..granted he makes money too but he isnt out to make you bleed like Barrett. There is NO way Barrett will ever see another QUALITY LEGIT car again valued at more than 250k unless they bring back the reserve..and even then I think this year left a very sour taste in the mouths of many. I cant wait to see Palm Beach.. Im sure glad I didnt consign anything there. Just think if you had a 600k car there and it only brought 400k to buy your own car back would be $72,000 that is insane and if you didnt do it you would lose 200k. That auction is hurting for next year unless they get smart or just sell junk.. Cars that blew my mind were

Motion Race car.
OCC Charger/Bike
Ohlers 71 Hemi Challenger
68 Yenko Camaro
basically to many to list..

Re: Barrett Jackson.....

I saw signs last year that looked like they were at their peak and starting to lose it. This year proves that BJ is not where you want to sell your car. R&S and Mecum will probably have a banner year after this fiasco. Watching them rush the BM Corvette across the block last year pointed out to me what was really going on. 18% commission to keep your own car explains it all.

While watching the auction over the weekend and seeing all of the stars and people come forward to donate to worthy causes such as the CNN Hummer. This discussion came up with a friend. Craig and his crew did a great job of getting the most out of the bidders on these items. And bless them for being so generous. But wouldn't it have been nice to hear Craig or his president come forward and contribute, offer some sort of matching or donate commission on the sale? Perhaps he has contributed in ways that I am not aware of. If so I apologize, but he had one hell of a weekend ($). Would have been nice to see him step up. Kinda made me sick thinking about it... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

If not We can expect the B/J auction become nothing more Than breathing ground to
Unload bogus / fake and anything goes type of car. Sad in a way he got to greedy
This year there are a lot of unhappy campers that lost a lot of money

Hell last night there was unloading pianos Guitars and in the end Sunday they are unloading soap box Debby type cars something I just did not want to see

Re: Barrett Jackson.....

Ok everyone, here you go, from the Official BJ site of cars listed and sales results: I took each car (69 Camaro) from the site, added and divided accordingly. There were 38 total 1969 Camaros listed on their site, the total sales price(s) of these 38 cars EXCLUDING COMMISIONS were $4,491,050.00 or AVERAGE price of $118,185.52. If you remove the Motion car (not roadable) and Reggies zl-1 the total for the 36 cars (38-2)is $88,641.66. I think both of these numbers are a fair average for what went through. Many were clones, and small block cars (z-28's ) Why are we worried about values anyway, it's just a HOBBY, right? The sky is not falling, chicken little............ Craig
