Noticed that when you first posted this photo 2 mos. ago and thought you're just laying things out & will get to them.
Glad to hear you did.

Yep, the punch list is short Ryan. Just a front end alignment, and I should be ready for the 1st test drive.

It should move under it's own power, but I still have it up on blocks. We're looking at a week long rain event, so it may have to sit for a while.

This may be the reason my Nova isn't charging enough to run the lights very long after dark. I'm fine all day long but night driving is killing the battery. I had both of those grounds fastened to the core support. I'm assuming one fastens to the voltage regulator and the other to the horn relay? I had the Alternator tested and have a new Voltage regulator and new horn relay...

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova

I wound up replacing the regulator. I put one of the ground wires on the reg, and it worked briefly. Then quit completely and it was a Delco regulator. I replaced it with a Standard brand, and grounded it like the Delco. So far the Standard one is good.

The Delco reg was all over the place. Sometimes it was charging 16 volts and then a min later it was doing nothing. Then back to 15....etc

...and yes, the other ground I put on the horn relay screw.

Grounds will drive a person nuts -- have you ever owned a Vette? I've had a number of 2nd and 3rd gen and the electrical systems can be a challenge at times.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova

Ok, this is it. Had it out for the front end alignment today. It actually moves under it own power. Hasn't done that for a while. This build has been a lot of fun. I will be putting another set of wheels together for it. I'll be going with white steelies and cheater slicks on the rear, and a somewhat skinny wheel/tire combo up front. Not sure which wheels yet, up front. Probably a 15" X 6" of some sort, with black wall bias ply's....

I appreciate all the great advise, comments, emails, pm's and phone calls, over the past 6 months. I'm new to Nova's so I had a lot to learn, but it was one of the more pleasurable builds I've done. Now I have a new garage/storage building to build. I'll be thrilled if that goes as well as the Nova project went.

Here's a couple final shots for those who aren't sick of looking at it yet.

Bill, I have followed your build from the beginning and the car looks fantastic. I certainly have gained an appreciation for Novas that I never had beforehand and your attention to detail is amazing. Nice work and hopefully you pick up another project once your garage has been taken care of, as I'm sure there are many like me, eager to do it all again!

Bill, you've done a great job. From the wheel/tire discussions on some other threads ir looks like you seettled on the 14" M&Hs. I think Nova's look great with 14" wheels all around. How arw you feeling about running 15s up front and 14s in back?

The Delco cover bolted on fine. As a matter of fact, the Standard was the exact same regulator as the Delco......cept it works!!

Paul, I looked at both Grady's and Riches Nova's with 15" fronts/14" rears, and they look good. I'm assuming the slicks are a bit taller than a reg tire, so they are probably about the same diameter. I'm also concerned with the Cragars hitting the calipers up front. The 15's would have more room. There's not a lot of back spacing choices with Cragars. I also like the front to sit up a bit more, and fill out the wheel well.

By the way, I love the tow tabs. I'm thinking of putting the pins thru the holes, but I'm not sure what they look like.

Bill Rose 10-28-2013 01:58 AM

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova

I got the Cragars with cheater slicks, and the skinnies up front. Had the car out for the maiden voyage today, breaking in all the new parts, like the Moser rear, trans, clutch, and the engine of course. The Nova is real hoot to drive now. It has some serious power and torque. I was taking it easy on the new motor, getting the rings seated, etc....

The new power steering and brakes are great too. It's tight, handles great, but has a smooth ride. I have a couple bugs to get out of it but simple stuff. Here's a shot with the new wheels.

Don't get me started Dan!! The new garage is suppose to be easy. I've been building stuff since I was 10 yrs old......Way easier than a Nova restoration.....right?? Not!!!

That could be a whole new thread Dan, dealing with our so called "government" !!!!!!

Trying to get a building permit to build a perfectly legal, (everything within the building codes, and zoning laws) garage, on the land I've owned for 30 yrs. You would think I was building a school for handicapped children. Stay tuned!!

I hate all the excessive government intrusion.......and I'll leave it at that for now.

What brand and CR pistons did you use? Part number? Thanks -- The TAZ

Bill Rose 10-31-2013 12:44 AM

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova

They're 30 over Keith Black forged pistons, with small domes (18.3)... I was trying to keep the cr around 10-1, for drivability.
