Some have rusted, been repaired and rusted again:-)

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Gentlemen I have always heard that the body needs to be braced before removing the complete floors like that because the body is so unstable. Is there any truth to that. Apparently Ricks comfortable with not doing it. Just looking for the knowledge. Rick glad to see that old tired beast is getting a second chance at life. Keep the pics coming!

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
The guy doing this rebuild for me had just finished doing an Olds Cutlass convertible.
Other than a couple braces to attach the cowl section to the rear inner quarters, he had the body sitting on jackstands just like this one is. That car is now a beautiful finished piece, that fits together like it should. Obviously with the post sedan body, the extra bracing was not required. |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Great point Rick never took in consideration the post for the bracing.

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Neat car, looking forward to seeing it when it's done.

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
A little more progress, as we now have the floor fitted.
We had to do a lot of repair work to the rockers/inner rockers, as someone had decided to drive a large punch through the bottoms of the rockers for drainage or something. We also felt the best way to get at the holes and jack damage on the outer rocker, was to remove the inner rocker. After a lot of cleaning, welding and grinding, as well as some primer sealer to the inner rocker, and POR 15 applied to the inside of the outer rocker, we were ready to affix the inner rockers to the new floor pan. I originally was going to use a floor out of another car, but we realized the pan was slightly tweaked from a wreck the donor car had, and there was some small rust holes starting in the driver's footwell, that grew as I tried to weld them. With that, decided to use a good repo pan. We'll have to remove the bucket seat brackets off it, and later put in a good used bench seat floor hump. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscf7082.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dscf7079.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dscf7086.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-dscf7087.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-dscf7088.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-dscf7094.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-dscf7092.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-dscf7102.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscf7103.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscf7105.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-dscf7106.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-dscf7115.jpg |

I like it, too! Soon, you and "the Dr. of Steel" will have more room to 'operate'
One question....are the repro floor pans available with bench seat mounts and 4 speed hump? Not that I need it, just curious. |

We'll know for sure soon. I don't think there are any floors with the bench seat shift hump already installed, but I didn't look very much for that as I've had this new floor in stock here for a few years. I don't remember seeing any suppliers with that option years ago anyway. |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Very nice work repairing the vehicle. One question I have , are you sandblasting in the garage -and if so what type of equipment are you using or method of keeping the mess down ?. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, John |

Thanks, John </div></div> John, No sandblasting will be done in the garage or here at all. After we are done with our metal repair and replacement, but before we hang the quarter panels, the body shell will go on to a rotisserie. Then when all is done, we have a guy who will come get the shell on the rotisserie, soda blast it, and return it to us for final body smoothing, etc. |

Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
Thanks Rick, I'm kinda at the point you are with my project, but I'm leery of putting it back on the rotisserie with the quarters off. Are you planning to add bracing? I hope I'm not derailing your thread and apologize if I am.
John. |
Re: Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Found
No problem John.
Part of the reason for this thread is to help others tackle a tough situation like repairing bad rust. (Is there such a thing as good rust) I will ask Eric exactly when he wants the car up on the rotisserie again, but I thought he had told me it would be after the lower sections were replaced. I'll get back on this. |

Yeah, he'd be over here at the Ponderosa, as he liked to call my place, setting up the next car deal. He definitely is around here, as I think about him and the fun he was/is. |

John. </div></div> We got the floor all welded in now. Man there is a lot of it that needed to be done. Took all day. No picture updates as it all looks pretty much the same, but now the car is solid on the bottom. Next step, to move the rear jack stands forward to just in front of where the rear axle would sit. Then we will remove the trunk floor and replace. After that it will go on a rotisserie for the quarter panels, one side then the other, not taking both off at the same time. Looking forward to next Saturday. |
