Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

Thanks Jeff - always good to compare setups. Ours is pretty close to yours:

Our setup:
• BZ1, 3x3 (I was told! Crank does say 3”) Dyno 125 cam
• 33mm, .8 & .7, 57 pilot with 195 main, mixture screw ¾ turns out
• Polar Jr primary clutch with 15-28-22 ramps, purple spring, 12 grams on the arms
• Gaged secondary, 38 helix, blue spring, 4th hole
• 14/84 sprockets =’s 6.00 gear
• 18x8x8 tires
• Last run:
o RT = .014
60' = 1.929
330' = 5.502
660' = 8.763
MPH = 73.73

CHT - start = 153
EGT - start = 624

CHT - end = 239
EGT - end = 957

After conferring with others, and a few conversations with Huddleston, I've made some changes:

- took 2 grams off the arms, so I've now got 10 grams on them
- put the red spring into the Gaged secondary, probably the same effect as the Gaged specific 'blue' spring but its more common and an easier reference point
- put the 38 (roller) helix into the 5th hole to slow the engagement down a bit
- resetting the timing, was probably 150 thou in the hole, and will go to 350-400 thou
- installing a new NGK B6HS plug, had an NGK from the Yenko in there - probably not much impact, but...
- moved the rear sprocket / hub so that the chain is dead center between the frame rails. prior owner had the hub on backwards
- installed new rear axle bearings
- installed new brake rotor and pads, corrected the caliper install as it was literally floating - prior owner had it installed wrong
- changed main jet from a 195 to a 185 to get the EGT temps up at the big end
- changed fuel bowl to a Huddleston unit with the quick change jet option, which means that I removed the acc pump rod

There's probably more, but I'm tired of working on it - and need to run it to find out where we are. Season starts this Saturday, but we will miss Day 1 because of a baseball game. Might get a TnT in on Friday night.

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

At least we are doing our part to help the economy - bbbenny!

Been racing quite a bit, have the car pretty much dialed in - now the pressure is on the driver, and quite frankly it's taking a toll with 5 red lights in the last 8 runs. The car leaves nice, just a nice wrinkle in the sidewall, no major issues - except the red bulb! So, we are trying to order some offset spindles for the car to add some front end stagger and slow him down a little - I might take the cheaper route and loosen the throttle cable a little.

The launch - this one was an .001 green!

Even have time for a wiffle ball game at Quarter Aces!

Looking forwar to the trek to Bristol Dragway in a couple of weeks for the big event! Enrolled Ben in a Jr Dragster School too, we hope to improve a bit on our season,

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

Went to TnT last Friday night for the sole purpose of working on green lights - had 3 green out of 4 after we put some slack into the throttle cable, and lowered the air pressure in the front tires. Not too bad, gave us hope for Saturday.

Only one time run on Saturday due to the pending rain, Ben cut an .008 light - but it was nowhere good enough for the bye run as 3 other Jr's cut .000's, two others had .002's and another had an .005 within the 30+ car field.

Ben got lucky in round 1 when he drew a 12.90 car and she red lit by -.005 because Ben also red lit by -.005 Second round we were up against a 7.90 car and Ben went red by -.045. I can't tune that out of the car Extremely frustrating for the both of us! So, we will make some more adjustments before we head to Bristol, TN this Friday - and hope to learn a bunch in the Doug Foley Drag Racing School.

In the lanes for Round 2, nerves going crazy - note the Grumpy billboard on the wall at the Grove:

Wow...incredible lights, including Ben's.

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 07-17-2012 10:58 PM

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

Yea - you would think an .008 light would bring it home - but not at this track! Ben has been so good on the tree, with at least one .00X green light on each day of racing - until 6 weeks ago when we made a whole bunch of changes to the car to get it dialed into the 8.90 class. I will be unable to obtain a set of offset spindles for Ben's car by Friday, so plan 'B' is to launch at a lower idle rpm - which mechanically will tighten the throttle cable, so I'll need to add even more slack to compensate. I have to get him back to .00X lights because these kids are really good - there is a reason why MGR has won more Team Championships at the Eastern Conference Finals than any other track!

A trophy every once in a while helps to motivate us:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...withTrophy.jpg

My Amanda has decided that she too would like to race a Jr Dragster - provided it is pink (purple might do in a pinch!) . I hope to have an easier time with her, as both Ben and I have stumbled our way through this mess together - and she will be the recipient of our small amount of knowledge.

Danny loves to go along, but at 4.5 just can't hang in for the long haul!

The 2012 trek to the Eastern Conference Finals is in the book! Another great trip - can't think of a better way to spend time with my son Benjamin than 8 days of racing,

We pulled out at 5:30am Friday for the 9 hour pull to TN

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use..._with_joel.jpg

We got there on time and got right to work setting up - boys went to work on their cars

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...n_the_pits.jpg

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...it_central.jpg

Heading to the lanes - a ritual for the next 8 days Car count was 625 for the big event, but total count for the week was even more as some folks could not stay the whole time.

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use..._the_lanes.jpg

Trying to keep the sun from baking the driver!

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...m_the_back.jpg

Rolling up....

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...rolling_up.jpg

We went out the first round on both Saturday and Sunday with lazy lights, (at least they weren't red!). Rain postponed the TnT scheduled for Monday, which pushed the drag racing school to late in the afternoon. So, we had Randy & Eric from Halfscale Dragsters work on our car for a few hours in their trailer - replaced the entire throttle pedal assy, cable, added a heel stop, cable adjuster, steering coupling, etc... Next was the school - Ben listened intently during the class session, and then put it to work. We had 5 runs inside of 2 hours Monday night, I was exhausted! But the school was good as Ben had 5 green lights in a row with the slowest one being .077. We had trouble repeating this performance later in the week, but at least they weren't 'red'. We learned a lot in the school, too bad it was jumbled up with the Doug Foley Racing Experience and we did not get a lot of track time / feedback. But what we did learn, Ben used in the final event !

School session - 10pm!

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...hool_night.jpg

Ben won first round on a pedal-fest. Both cars dialed 8.90, Ben treed the other kid and then played the stripe to perfection running an 8.96 vs. the other kid's 8.97.

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...irst_round.jpg

Ben won second round at the stripe by pushing the other kid under, this was a difficult round as Ben was up against the Al-Anabi Jr Dragster and was trying to cope with the intimidation factor of running against a such a well sponsored car. They had equal lights, Ben was just .001 better so it was a race to the stripe where Ben ran him down to the stripe and then dunked 'em. Once the other kid got over his temper tantrum of throwing stuff and beating on his car Ben was able to shake hands and go across the scales - then through fuel check.

Ben trying to stay calm before round 2!

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...relaxation.jpg

Going through the scale and then on our way to Round 3 - our first time!

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...er_round_2.jpg

Unfortunately, we went out in the 3rd round with a lazy light to the kid that eventually won it all. But it was a super fun time, and we can't wait to go back next year.

Ben with the starting line favorite known as 'Cowboy', the kids love this guy because he truly loves the kids There was a line to have your kid's picture taken with him:

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...ith_cowboy.jpg

So, the 20th Anniversary event is over, more to come!!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

SOOoooooo.... Amanda says that she would like to race, but must have a pink car. Of course, like any well meaning Dad, that makes me start looking around for a Jr Dragster. There is a decent Halfscale car for sale at our local track, but I figure that we can peruse the 'For Sale' lot at the ECF's in Bristol, TN to see what pops up - and maybe get a good deal on a roller.

This car was there early in the week, and was a super clean car - exactly what I was looking for, but I hadn't heard much about the chassis company known as Mx2. The paint was beautiful, and had silver ghost flames that were done perfectly. I sent a pic to Amanda (who was relaxing on the beach) and she turned it down because it wasn't pink. I still wanted to buy this car after meeting the chassis builder and the owner in the pits, and learning a lot more about these Mx2 cars. They are really well made from a smaller outfit in Topeka, KS, and therefore don't migrate out to the east coast very often - but I really liked it. The seller came around later in the week to give me first dibs on the car, I offered all the $$ I had - but we were too far apart, and I had to let it go.

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...for_amanda.jpg

Not a scratch on this car, came with an Mx2 clutch, the 10" wide rear wheels, weight bars, very nice seat pad.... a truly nice car for the asking price (great seller too, very nice family from KS).

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...r_amanda_2.jpg

This mint green car has a twin that the younger sister drives - and it's pink, but not for sale:

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use..._look_like.jpg

Overall, there were easily 20+ cars there for sale, many were older rollers which is what we were looking for but we didn't come home with one. We would really prefer another Halfscale car, and so we parked Ben's car next to this one that is for sale at our track - and we might just try to cut a deal on this one later this year if we can get it as a roller.

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...ndas_car_1.jpg

https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...ndas_car_2.jpg

This car will need a minor chassis upgrade (helmet bars) and a paint job(silver metallic chassis and 'bubble gum' pink body with silver metallic graphics), but that is all stuff I can do myself - and I just might draft Amanda's help

These Jr's can get expensive, and are absolutely frustrating to figure out & tune - but you get what you pay for and I feel as though I'm ahead of the game because I wouldn't trade the time & experience for anything! As always, if you are curious about getting into one just let me or Jeff Morroco know. Amanda won't turn 8 until next July and I plan to have her car ready by April '13, might just need a shoe for this car until July!

Marlin, we hear you. Priceless.

This weekend we are going to load up a door car or two, and the two JRs, and spend the weekend camping out, and racing, at
Newport. Rob's two boys have been going at it all week about who will win.

If time permits, we may move the pedals so Rob's youngest daughter (8) can make a pass or two.

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

We took a few weeks off from racing, but with a double points weekend coming up we took advantage of the TnT session Friday night. Car ran good with an 8.85, 8.87 & 8.87 with Ben cutting good green lights; .015, .013 & .054. We felt good for Saturday morning.

The car count was very high this weekend with 41 Jr's on Saturday and 37 on Sunday! Ben was relaxed in the staging lanes though!

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...August2012.jpg

Ben had to race a 7.90 car in first round both days, and although he had a good light on Saturday (.021 to her .025) - I misdialed the car when I panicked a bit and added another 5 pounds at the last minute. So, Ben ran an 8.97 on an 8.90 - on the brakes a tad. She ran within a hundreth of her dial - she is very good racer with track championships, and even an ECF win. It was a really good drag race.

On Sunday, Ben had an .070 light vs. an .020 light for his competitor, and the game was over. Ben drove great, running an 8.898 on an 8.900 dial while pedaling trying to dunk him - but this one was lost at the tree.

Overall, some good drag racing - and no red lights!

Danny tagged along Friday night, and the whole family was there on Saturday - Amanda got to sit in this car, even though we couldn't cut a deal on it (yet). Just note the big smile!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

Well, we closed the MGR season on a bummer of a note, went out first round on Saturday (9/1), with Sunday (9/2)being rained out (cancelled). Car was running the number, Crew Chief was dialing well - driver was just a bit off his lights (slow). Oh well, the year ended like it started - still a Team of Rookies! We took in a local dirt track race on Saturday night just for a change of pace.

So, for our last outing of the year we went to our favorite track - 1/8 mile Quarter Aces - this past Sunday (9/9)for a special Jr event this past Sunday where they were running age groups. Had a good field of cars for such a small track with about 22+/- jr's, Ben won first round, however, lost 2nd round at the tree with a .10x light against an .013. Car was running well with an 8.87, 8.85, 8.92 (the fluke run), 8.87 & 8.89. Oh well, we had fun - and Ben stayed relaxed in the 'limo'!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

Yes, we are done for the year. We are pulling the Blockzilla and sending it out for a refresh as it will likely need to be bored out this time around. We have a backup BZ engine, complete, but will keep that one on the shelf for emergency use!

We had a fun year, learned a lot, improved a bunch - just not enough to win a race at MGR. One 8.90 driver made it to the final round in the last race of the year, otherwise, an 8.90 car didn't make it past the 4th round all year. It's a tough place to learn!

:gears:

YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY 01-22-2013 11:58 PM

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

So, we've changed our plan and will use the fresh backup engine as our primary this year. Although the 2012 engine might be a little tired, it will be just fine as a backup.

We've used the rebuild budget to buy a purpose built 12.90 engine for Amanda! She continues to show interest, so we are working on getting her a car - hopefully soon.

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

So, it's on to another season - once baseball ends. We installed our back up Blockzilla engine on Ben's car, and it has run pretty good so far - stringing together a group of runs that were ~4 hundreths apart, with 60' times that were just 1 thousandth apart.

We've hit one race this season, and Ben had the 3rd best light in a 30 car field with an .005 - and took out the points leader in round 1! He went out in round 2 when he tree'd the competitor - but scrubbed off too much at the stripe and lost by a nose.

Although this engine seems better than our previous one I've learned that at a track like MGR it is quite hard to go rounds with that combination, so I will surprise him tonight with this Beast of a powerplant! I stepped up his program with a new Huddleston Performance Sniper 8.90 engine, hope to try it out at TnT tonight. I'm setting my expectations low since I seem to have a history with 'epic fails' when it comes to new engines! But, hopefully it's a start towards a really fun season - with a first Win in our future!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!

So, we were able to break away last Saturday and hit Numidia. The cold temps, 35mph headwind, and crazy sticky starting line (I walked out of one of my shoes!) wreaked havoc on us as we tried to figure out the new combo. Ben had decent lights, but the cars were running slow - folks were dumping weight, but I chose not to in order to help offset the occasional cross wind. Ben went out first round with a goof at the stripe - don't know how he always gets paired up against the track champ 7.90 cars in the first round.... Oh well, they have a buy back round, and he won that - but went out in round 2 by misjudging the stripe as he was trying to hold the steering wheel at a 45 degree angle to offset the wind.

A bummer day of racing, but still a good time - it's a great track, we love going there. Staging lanes for round 2, Jr car count was pretty good for a holiday weekend at 26-30'ish:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps594d812b.jpg

I bought Ben's car by myself on a Friday night back in 2010, and he never met the previous owner. Well, the previous owners were at the track on Saturday - you can see why he got out of the car early, he is quite tall! My Benjamin is very tall for his age, and DJ towers over him! DJ now races the blue Nova in the background. Just a little transition picture:

This past Saturday was the next points day at MGR, but we could not attend due to my nephew getting married - all 3 kiddies were in the wedding over in NJ. Just as well since they only got one time shot after which they sat for 2 hours - and then they called the race, apparently for:

""Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail 8 was stopped in middle of the first time trials due to track conditions.

Because of the heavy rain that hit the area the night before, the track will have to be scraped in its entirety, an operation that will take several hours.""

That's a first for me!

So, after planning through some complicated logistics involving multiple vehicles (one of which was the 'race car rig'), Ben and I were able to grab a hotel farther east in NJ after the reception so we could race at Englishtown on Sunday. We need to get some runs on this new engine combination and sort out some strange stuff. Long story short, we hustled to get there for the 8am gate opening, then sat till 10am, then hustled to get 3 time shots in - learned a couple of things, added 10 #'s, and dialed an 8.90 - for the rest of the day!

Long story short, Ben went 5 rounds to get to the final - but we simply got beat in a good ole drag race and Ben runner'd up! Our best showing yet, and it was a real confidence builder for Benjamin. Some pic's:

We were so busy, (E-Town has a separate 1/8th mile track for the Jr's, so they run almost continuously!), I didn't take a pic of him in the lanes till the 4th round. They run age groups at this track, but group B was pretty big - hence the # of rounds he had to go.

No 'luck rounds' (bye's or red light wins) for us yesterday, Ben drove to each round win.

The Jr Program at Englishtown is pretty good, and they certainly treat their winners and runner up placers well. Benjamin got a plaque for winning first round, a nice tropy, a handful of decals, and a $25 debit card from Wells Fargo! He was pumped, helped him get over the runner up finish (a little!).

This is now his new favorite track!

Benjamin went a few rounds yesterday to grab his first win. We were at one of our favorite tracks, Quarter Aces Drag-o-Way in Boiling Springs, PA for a nice day of racing - just the guys for Father's Day.

This track has a small creek running through it (literally, there are 2 bridges on the way to the starting line), and tradition is that you get creek water dumped on your head after your first win here. Little bro Danny couldn't figure out what was going on!!

From Victory Lane to despair Friday night TnT, then 2 days at Cecil County was a thrashing bust.

The 12.90 car just won't slow down, till I throttle stopped it too much and it died mid track Friday night - had to run down the track with the golf cart to get him. Then on the 3rd run at Cecil County on Saturday, he took the turn too fast and ran the left front wheel up the wall taking out the left front tire etc... and cracked the nose. We parked it.

The 8.90 car just won't speed up. Another gear change Friday night helped ET but not mph. Went out 2nd round at Cecil on Saturday, then the car wouldn't stage on a time trial for the dial 330 race - turns out some bolts backed out of the axle mounting plate and eventually tore up / locked up the rear. Ben was bummed, and wanted to race on Sunday. So, we decided to forfeit the Saturday night baseball game tickets I had for us, and we thrashed on the cars instead. Put his backup engine into Amanda's car, moved the pedals so he could fit into it, re-routed the oil overflow/breather system, swapped front wheels, and it fired up! So, we hit the hotel to get cleaned up and then a late run to Burger King.

First time shot on Sunday was disaster, oil pushing out everywhere and it flat dies at the stripe after vibrating. I knew it wouldn't like the 7.33 gear, but didn't expect 9100 rpm at the stripe! So, I figured out that it was jetted waaaay too fat, and the humidity was high, so the excess fuel along with the moisture was filling the block up. We dumped 8+ oz of oil/fuel from the overflow, and 18+ oz from the block, jetted down and barely made it back up for first round with a 'guess' dial. After all that, we lost first round - but car picks up a tenth, no oil leaking anywhere. We buy into the consolation race, and Ben wins first round on a double breakout. But, we go out in round 2. So it ends.

Today we scramble for replacement parts, put Amanda's car back into the 12.90 configuration, and give it another go next weekend! They can't all end with a trophy

New billet rear axle assy with splined wheel hubs, its only $$ As I removed the damaged parts last weekend I noticed that the old assy (which is keyed) was rolling the square key over a little and probably wouldn't last another year. So, we upgraded to this:

Another bunch of clutch changes and we'll be back for more testing.... One of these days I'll be able to just relax in this chaos!
