Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Ken,
why don't you come down to Chevellabration with us in that convert before you tear into it? It's the weekend of June 10th? You might be on Hot Rod power tour? |
Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Ofcourse he`ll be on the Power Tour, it`s his time chill!

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Taking the car to the Upholstry shop tomorrow.....I held off on finishing the dash until I knew that we were going to get the GTO Dash Module to be functional.......Since that happened, I can now finish up the install......Here are some pic's.....I originally roughed in a basic frame for the module......
Starting point......... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01827.jpg Bent up another Bezel to form a outer frame so the module will be recessed in the final assy....... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01832.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01836.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01840.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01843.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01845.jpg Partially Finished Ken |

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Here's the part I've been waiting for. What's your framing; rod or tubing?
I'm anxious to see the blend of old and new on the dash. |
Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
3/8" dia x 1/16 wall tubing......Bent everything by hand.....Patience and minimum Brain activity are all that's required...........LOL......Just dropped off the car at the Upholstery shop so I'm not going to get to do anything on the Dash today.......I had my camera with me today, but I was so excited about getting the car in, I forgot to take any pic's....But, it's only a 1/2 hour away so I'll be posting progress pic's as Dave progresses........Looking to get it back on May 15th, that will give me a week to bolt the sheetmetal on so I can (if the Planets are in alignment) take it to the Automotion show in the Wisconsin Dells......

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
While the car is in for upholstry, I got the dash roughed in ready to go back to the body shop for finishing and painting........got all the garnish mouldings ready also....
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01859.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01865.jpg After a bunch of head scratching, I decided to only build the center A/C vent into the dash.......I was going to build two more (one on each end of the Dash) into the dash, but there was so much of a profile change in those area's that it wouldn't have looked right......so I make some Aluminum bezel plates and mount them just below the dash at each end.......... The blank area in below the center vent will get a CNC'd decorative emblem made to fill in that area........couldn't mount anything in that area that had any depth to it as the A/C unit is right behind that area and there just isn't any room.......... I also got the headlight buckets stripped, modified for the Halogen light kit, painted and assembled, they are just waiting for the car to come home for installation... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01861.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01869.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01874.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01880.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01879.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01882.jpg Ken |
Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Ken, I'm so impressed by your ambition and drive to finish this project. A lot of it really hits home to me because I used to work in a very similar shop and built several cars there one piece at a time. Now.....I couldn't actually bring the entire car into work but I'd work on a different part everyday after I finished my "official" duties and bring the pieces home for installation. I always worried about if anything would ever happen to that job how difficult things would become as far as car-building.

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
One of the big problems I had left to deal with was the rear quarter window seals......when I took the car apart 10 years ago, I threw the seals out figuring that I would just buy new ones........Lesson Learned.....(never throw anything out until you have a replacement as good or better than your old part).....Well....when it came time and I was ordering all the parts for the car I found out that these seals were not being reproduced and weren't available anywhere........The quarter windows on this particular model are of the "Swing Out" style and are unique to the Club Coupe......standard Ford coupes had a fixed window in that position.......(Club Coupe has a rear seat and the standard does not)......So.....What to do.....
This seal attaches to the garnish moulding and seals the window as its pivots and also has a outer lip that seals the window opening to the opening in the body.........After looking thru catalogs I seen that the 46-48 Ford coupe had the same type of window......Humm!!......I decided to take a $100 gamble and buy a set hoping they would be close to the profile I needed......when they showed up I noticed that they were much larger but the cross section profile looked like it was close and I thought I would be able to modify them somehow....Well!!.........Today was the day......Here are some pic's of the process........... Starting point.....Garnish moulding and window assy........Missing the seal between the window frame and the moulding......... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01849.jpg As you can see the seal is larger than the moulding http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01850.jpg After sectioning the seal I test fit it into the channel and it fit and sealed perfectly (the lip on the seal in this pic should be on the other side) http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01852.jpg I started with the Pivot holes and started working around after cutting some sections out http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01885.jpg The shape followed the radius pretty good without any puckering http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01886.jpg I got it figured out to fit with only two seams or joints....But....trying to cut soft rubber and get a perfectly square end were the two parts came together was not that easy..........I didn't want any leaks or to be able to see the jointed area http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01888.jpg So..........Being a "Spoiled Brat" again............I made up a block that had the same shape as the seal channel and slid the seal into the block which I had mounted on a surface grinder and ground the end perfectly square http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01892.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01884.jpg Then I cut the upper piece to fit the upper pivot hole and fit and ground the ends and made this piece to be slightly longer than need be to provide a little compression (about a 1/32") at the joint.......Bingo.....a finished seal.....I love it when a plan comes together......... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01891.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01893.jpg Another thing crossed off the list...........Now I can get all the garnish mouldings painted for installation when the car comes back from the upholstry shop......... Bud................. I've got some glue that's like super glue, except after applying the glue you can still move the parts for alignment, then you give the glue a shot of activator and it locks immediately......neat stuff..... Ken |

I got the rest of the window trim stripped and ready for Paint....The plan is to drop off all the Interior parts for paint on Monday and get them back on thursday........As I was sitting in the house this morning, I felt the Dashboard calling me from the garage......So....I went out and got it roughed in for the Body guy to finish......Going to the Upholstry shop today so I'll post some pic's later.......

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Good News today........Got all the trim and Dash out for paint and talked to the upholstry shop.......I'll be picking the car up next Saturday, it will be finished except for the seats.....which is O.K........That way I can pretty much finish up the assy of the sheetmetal and bolt the seats in last.....Hopefully I'll make the Dells Automotion show...
Ken |

That's great news Ken...I know how much you're looking forward to going to the show in the Dells....just make sure you remember to take your camera!!

There are two people working on the car..........almost everything except the seats will be finished on Saturday, I'm picking the car up and will continue with the final assy and pick up the seats towards the end of next week...............the window garnish mouldings and dash didn't get painted as planned.......I had to go and pick up some of the mouldings from the body shop so the door panels could be final fitted and finished by Saturday......Gonna drop them off at the body shop Monday morning for painting........After a week off, I'm ready to get back at it for final assy...here are a couple of "In Process" pic's.......Headliner and windlace are installed and look'in good http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01922.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01923.jpg Ken |

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
One of the few things that I don't like about a 37 Ford is the way the tail lights are mounted as stock......the tail light stand is big and it raises the tail light high off the fender and is almost like an after thought......Stock....
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...aillights1.jpg and I don't like the smoothie look where they are flush with the fender surface......so............I decided to make a custom tail light stand that would move the tail light much lower and closer to the fender........we have Solidworks solid modeling software at the shop so I sat down today and designed up some stands that would do what I wanted.......the parts will be machined tomorrow so I can get the assy's finished and ready for paint next week......here are some Solidworks models as to how they will look.......... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...ect/assem1.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...ect/assem4.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...ect/assem2.jpg Ken |

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
I like those little mounts keeps the great shape of original housing but douses the "after thought" look of the long and gawky stand.

Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Started out the day today putting the running boards on and had a flow going so I continued on with the front sheetmetal....(Note!! to self......Retap all fender mounting holes to get the Paint buildup out, "Before" putting fender on.....LOL) I also ordered new Bumpers for the car and when I opened the box today, I had two front bumpers and no rear one.....Darn!!!
Here are some pic's of todays progress............. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/DSC01932.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/DSC01941.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/DSC01946.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...z/DSC01947.jpg Starting to look like a car again........... Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Ken, what you do with cars is inspirational...I honestly don't know how you do it, let alone how quickly you do it! It takes me 1 1/2 years to scrape up enough to build one final lousy small block project, and you wrap up an entire car in less time.
Makes me feel like a hack. The car is turning out beautifully...not that there was ever any doubt it would. Eric |
Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
Here's some pic's from today....................More assy.........The LS engine now looks like a neat package.........
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01952.jpg I talked to a Tech at TCI where the front suspension came from as I was concerned about the front springs being too stiff and the front end sitting too high.....He said that after I got some miles on it the springs would settle....but...If I loaded some weight on the front it would quicken the settling process...So......Here was my bandaid fix....LOL http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01957.jpg I also didn't like the way the car sounded with generic Turbo Mufflers, so..I bought some Flowmasters and put them on today also....... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01960.jpg Got the front bumper on also along with some Fog Lights that I had......The Jury is still out on the Fog Lights........If they stay on, they will be my turn signals... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...DSC01970-1.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...DSC01968-1.jpg Ken |
Re: 37 Ford LS2 Continuation thread
You answered my next question before I asked it. (I wondered what you were using for front turn signals.) So now I'll ask, do you have the accessory panel that mounts between the grille and the radiator?
