Re: 69 yenko chevelle

Joe, I had seen that car at a show and I guess it was the owner that was telling me that he only had one tip as the other one was gone when he bought the car. I would assume that they were on the car new but the picture BKH has showing the Yenkos with the slant cut tips would lead me to believe otherwise. One thing that could be possible is that a secondary source was used and they made the slant cut tips and were more readily available.? One thing is for sure, with the rolled tips you do not have to worry about cut knuckles while polishing the bumper!...............RatPack..................... ......

Re: 69 yenko chevelle

I had a '68 Chevelle and bought a set of the exhaust tips after the '69's came out. Had to modify the tailpipes to make them work but the ones I received from GM had the rolled edge. Evidently the rolled edge pieces were early service items. They barely lasted a year before rusting through at the bottom. The next set I got were the straight cut. My guess is GM cured the rust problem by switching to the "new" design.
Can't testify to the use of resonator pipes being exclusive to the chambered systems in '69 but my '70 came with resonator pipes and straight cut tips, as did all '70 SS Chevelles (excluding ElCaminos).

P.S. When I first met Rick Nelson, I said the same thing "I thought you died in a plane crash." His response was "I did, but I got better." Super guy! Very knowledgeable and talented.

Can any of you guys who have seen the Original rolled Ex.tips, tesify to the fact that the Part number was indeed stamped into them?
If so,was it on the top or bottom of the Ex.tip?

I put a original pair on the black COPO we restored. There were no numbers stamped in this pair anywhere.

Rick,
I don't believe they put numbers on them until the 1972-73 version. After that, I have seen them on top, bottom and sides. Not possitive about that however. May make a good question on TC.

My brothers 70 LS-6 has both the orig. tips and do not have the part #'s on them. That is how they came from the factory, only later did they put the part #'s on them, and i have only seen them on the bottom. "MOF"

I have NOS cut off tips and they have no numbers

Re: 69 yenko chevelle

Thanks guys.Thats what I thought.
I know about the 70 tips not having a number from the line, but I found a set of NOS rolled tips, with the number stamped into the bottoms.
Unusual I thought. Then the seller just emailed me today to say that he believes these were homemade.
I know of a man who does this here,so that confirmed it for me.He used a current GM set to do this on.
Thanks to all.

A couple more shots of the car. #1 is Chad getting ready to load it on the trailer. Notice the offset striping on the hood.
