The early D90 stripe indicates the car was built no later than early November 1968, prior to the release of JL8. The complete photo shows the car was built with standard 14 x 7 wheels with hub caps so no JL8.
The purpose of the photo was OJ signing a promotional contract with Chevy. In another photo, he is posing with John De Lorean. De Lorean joined Chevy February, 1969. The car may have been a prop; no reason to believe OJ ever owned it. |
Where's the fuel gauge if this Z was ordered without a console?
|
The body number is somewhat of an indicator of when a dealer order was confirmed. This one was confirmed late December 1968, prior to the change in required equipment for Z/28.

The dash has a blank center plate where I expected to see the fuel gauge (post 5) So it was also ordered without a tach which was still optional at the time?

OJ's car is most likely an early LA car and my original stripe is exactly like the one in the pic where it continues down on the fender extension. My car is an 11A LA car

Popular Hot Rodding tested an L89 car in the April '69 issue. Believe it or not, still exists and was on ebay many years ago. Also an 11A car; L507834 w/2nd design D90 stripe.

124379l508474 I still have pics of my original paint fenders and extensions somewhere. I replaced the front fender with NOS ones in May 1981 because they had rust holes the size of a quarter down at the bottom.
I copied that stripe exactly when my car was repainted in 1981, not even knowing there was a difference in striping. I continued that to today. |
That's interesting.
If I go by the theoretical build schedule, your car was final-assembled on or about November 13, 1968 with the 1st design stripe. L507834 was final-assembled on or about November 8, 1968 with the 2nd design stripe. Wonder if L507834 was held up in the bank and actually built later. It was a well-optioned car [$5400] with a rare engine. Thanks much! |
