Re: School me on SS427s!

The number I have read and heard is 39 SS427 Convertibles were built. But I suspect it was speculation as I have never seen an official build list besides the one you mentioned. If that accurate it would be about 20% of total production with 2124 being built. I know one convertible was a raffle prize for the 1967 Worlds Fair per the owner at the time I saw it others have said it was some GM special car give away prize. It was owned by a Michigan farmer and sold recently at the Mecum Auction in 2005. It was White with red interior. The farmer raced it at the Pure Stock Drags unrestored . It had 25,000 original miles on it when I saw it and featured a whole host of factory options, among them being power front disc brakes, power windows, power drivers side bucket seat, tilt steering column with simulated wood sports steering wheel, "Comfortron" air conditioning, AM-FM stereo radio, 8 track tape player, tachometer and gauge cluster only thing it was missing was the D96 side stripes.

The blog I'm writing will be done soon, but HERE's some other car stuff I've written.

Going to try to finish the article now, and then I'll reply to your other post!

John,
Do you have any memory of a red 68 Biscayne 427/385 stick ordered by engineering to test posi clutches? I was talking to a guy who bought this car from Chevrolet after it had traveled in circles for 3,000 miles worth of testing!

[/ QUOTE ]

No, not offhand - there were over 1300 cars in the Engineering Evaluation fleet at any one time, and haulaway trucks full of them arrived every day. I focused on mine because I knew it was coming - I knew the Staff Engineer who ordered it for his development program.

Yes, it was a '67 L-72. Nope, have no paper on the car - it was 42 years (and ten transfers/homes) ago; all I have is the special order tag. It was that pretty champagne color inside and out, with redlines. If it stayed in Flint after I sold it, it's probably iron oxide dust by now.

Not a 67 but it is a 427 car and we have always called it a " SS427 Sport Coupe" . Its been sitting in a shed for years now but was our "community car" when we were kids and the vehicle of choice on Holloween.
