The 1969 Daytona 500 was the first to be broadcast in color by ABC’s Wide World Of Sports. Because Chrysler didn’t have a bright red color they chose to paint the #71 Charger Daytona in Ford’s Poppy Red.

He bought it from GM with the caveat that nowhere on the car could he use either GM, Chevrolet or Corvette emblems. Not only did he race it (using his own funds), it became his weekend daily driver.

Underneath the body is the chassis of a 1957 Corvette SS. The car weighed about 2154 lbs, - about 1000 lbs less than a production Corvette. It was later retained by the GM Design Studio as a historically significant vehicle and now is part of the GM Heritage Collection.

----Back in about 1976 or so this 66 Corvette passed thru Classic Motors in Hinsdale IL. It was a very low mileage 427/425 and had many options. It belonged to an extremely odd character from Kentucky who bought it new and basicly put it away. He also bought a new 67 427/435 red convert that had every option on the window sticker. We also had that car for sale as well but the owner took it back to Kentucky. It attained some different notoriety when displayed in the guys showroom. Two guys in a bar across the street got into a gun fight and a bullet went thru the plate glass window and then thru the rear fender. From then on it had the nickname "The Bullet Hole Corvette". As far as I know the hole has never been fixed. I wanted both these super low mile cars, but couldn't begin to afford them even back then! I have always wondered where it ended up. ----Same color combo (rare) and some of the same options, but not the same car. No one would have ever restored the car I know. Oh well. I'll keep on looking for this one and the bullet hole car. I have a feeling that Tim might know where the 67 is....Bill S
