The "Mag" wheel covers were available from the dealership in 1966 for the Corvair. Any reason why they wouldn't be available for the Chevelle/Malibu?

They were available for pretty much any Chevy, N96 option. The '65-'66 mag styles were different from '67-up. If you don't know the differences then you probably wouldn't pick up on it. I had to learn from somebody that knew. The '65-'66 had what appears to be a center cap with the bowtie in it. The 5 webbed spokes end just below the "cap". The later years '67-up, the webbing went right to the top, no virtual "cap". The 15" versions had an extra step in the trim ring part of the wheel cover. I don't know for sure what year they started offering the 15" version. Also some of the later versions had the spokes painted black. I should dig some out and take pictures.

Excellent description!!
There are other differences but these pix show the how to tell the difference at a glance. '67 on top, '66 on bottom. Also note the difference in the size of the cooling slots.
