Re: Old Street Scenes
Here's a photo of my best high school buddy's car in '68. It's a real L-78 SS. Originally it had a black vinyl roof but it was removed. Pure coincidence that the plate read RUR-425. How cool! He joined the Navy after graduation and drove it to Long Beach, CA, then sold it. I can only imagine driving that thing across the country with 4.11s.

</div></div> I went from Minneapolis to Indianapolis in 1983 for Super Chevy Sunday in my 68 SS427 Impala and let me tell you, it was NO picnic. If I recall correctly it was running about 3500 RPM at about 55 mph. Triple black car, 4.11's and no air while 101 degrees out. Yuck! |

Re: Old Street Scenes
Did they make 65 Impala L78? Never heard of one.
Dave 67 Nova Boy |
Re: Old Street Scenes
Yep, the new L78 was available w/ the big cars as well as the '65 'Vettes. Same as the '65 'Vettes too, they were first rated @ 425HP later changed to 375Hp by rating HP at a different rev. I've read about 4-door '65 L78's being produced too also of guys buying cars to get the motor then reselling w/ SB power etc. And whether 425 or 375 HP, L78's were different engines than the hydraulic lifter L37 375HP '65 Malibu Z16s. '65 was a great year for engine options as 409's were available up to the mid Feb. intro of the new Mk. 1V's. We got the W-motors a little longer up here in Canada including w/ our Chevy powered Pontiacs also, even though THE absolute last factory installed 409 VIN has yet to be confirmed...it was a Canadian Pontiac! ~ Pete |
Re: Old Street Scenes
That is soo cool! Wonder how many of them were produced?
Thanks for the info on this...I knew of the 409 Impala's but never of the L78. So they made 325/375 396 HP only and the 409 that was 335 right? Dave 67 Nova Boy |
Re: Old Street Scenes
Dave,
In '65, the 409 was either 340hp (hydraulic, small heads, Rochester) or 400hp (solid, big heads, Z-11 cam and an AFB) 340hp 2,086 400hp 742 L-78 396 1,838 Verne |

Yep. Also notice the milk box at the bottom of the steps. We still had delivery then. Better times. And they didn't salt the roads. You just just had to learn how to drive when it snowed. Imagine that! Verne |
