There is evolutionary and then there is revolutionary and that is what the 1966 "flip up" Comets were. At 1700 pounds powered by an injected 427 SOHC they won a staggering 86% of all races they participated in. The weight reduction program was so severe - there are no brakes on the front. The brakes on the rear were experimental Kelsey-Hays all aluminum (including the rotors) disc brakes.

In 1968/1969 when not on the drag strip Ronnie Sox drove a 1969 Hemi Road Runner as an every day car. Plymouth gave him an Imperial to use but he didn't like it, citing that he didn't feel "old enough" (he was 28 at the time) for such a car and requested the RR instead.

In April of 1965 before a crowd of 12,000 spectators at a small drag strip in Dallas, Georgia a tie rod broke beneath Richard Petty's fuel injected Hemi powered Barracuda drag car while he was on a run sending the car into the crowd. An 8 year old boy was killed.
