Ever wonder why the first three minutes of the movie —the opening credits—are animated? It's because the producers had originally planned to make a cartoon version of the Broadway show "Grease." They eventually went with a live-action movie instead, but decided to keep the animated intro

Lucie Arnaz was on the short list to play Betty Rizzo, leader of the Pink Ladies. But her mother, Lucille Ball, got angry when Paramount insisted that Lucie do a screen test. "I used to own that studio," Ball reportedly growled at the movie's producers. "My daughter's not doing a screen test." (Actually, Lucy had owned Desilu, which Paramount acquired.) Arnaz refused to try out for the role, and Stockard Channing got it instead

John Travolta wasn't a shoo-in for lead role of greaser Danny Zuko. Henry ("The Fonz") Winkler was offered the part, but turned it down because he was afraid of being typecast. Marie Osmond might have been cast as Sandy Olsson—the part played by Olivia Newton-John—but she didn't like the idea of turning into a bad girl at the end of the movie. Susan Dey of "The Partridge Family" didn't care to play another teenager. And Frankie Avalon landed the role of the Teen Angel only after Elvis Presley passed on the offer

In the original Broadway musical, "Greased Lightnin" is sung by Kenickie, the character played by Jeff Conaway in the movie. Which makes sense. After all, the lyrics are about Kenickie's car and how fast it will go. But before he would accept the role of Danny, John Travolta insisted that he be the lead singer on that song. Conaway does sing backup, though

"I got so many hickeys people will think I'm a leper," says Betty Rizzo (Stockard Channing) in this scene. Those hickeys weren't created by a makeup artist. Jeff Conaway gave Channing real ones so that they would look authentic

Counting on a product placement deal with Coca-Cola, Paramount worked the soft drink brand into a number of scenes. But then the deal fell through. To avoid a costly reshoot, Coke products and signs were blurred or digitally removed.

"Grease" was supposed to end with Danny and Sandy kissing to the song "We Go Together." But the scene was mysteriously removed in the editing room. "I don't know what happened, why that never got in," director Randal Kleiser said. "It astounds me that it wasn't the ending." This year the original kissing scene has been added to special digital releases of "Grease," to mark the movie's 40th anniversary.
