Quick update: Got one of the bigger projects (tailgate) on the ElCamino finished. It all adjusted, opens and closes nice. Everything is wired.

Just need the bed corner moldings back from chrome, and the bed area will be finished.

Also got most of the interior finished. Carpet/console etc. is in. Just waiting for the door panels and seat covers.

Glass is coming this week too. Vent windows are restored, and ready for new glass.

Had a busy weekend. I got the nose (fenders/header panel/emblems) on the ElCamino. They are nos fenders, but still had some fitting issues, but after working on the adjustments well into the night, I was finally happy with the fit. I really have to wonder how these cars were built so quick on the assembly line. Also put all the window mechanisms in the doors and installed the front light harness. Various other little things. Anyway here's one pic.

Looks super! I still think SS Elky's are the most underrated cars (trucks?) out there. Is it gonna get a black side stripe?

btw, I want it!

Yes Joe. The black stripes are ready to go on, now that the fenders are installed. The stripes have been sitting in the bed for weeks. It's gonna be tough sticking the stripes to those body panels, I spent months sanding, but like everything else. Ya just gotta do it, I guess.

Bill,

Its safe to say that....No 1969 El Camino left any assembly line in the U.S. back in the day....looking and fitting like your El Camino looks today.

Not many people understand the hours it takes to properly fit a car as we make them fit today....if you look at any all original untouched car....most would agree that the fit and finish was not a major quality control back in 1969.

Bill...FYI, The side stripe will take you just as much time putting it on as your front clip.... especially if it is your first time. I know the outcome will be very nice.

The truck looks Great https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Now get rid of that center pole in your garage...its making me crazy? Take the next set of pictures with the stripe on...outside of the garage https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Re: New project coming along

Have you ever seen an original (untouched) '69 Camino SS with the side stripes? I put the same ones on mine, (well, actually SCW did!) but the only original article I ever found with pics of a 69 SS Camino (I believe it was in CARS magazine) showed it with the same stripes as a Chevelle, with the bed stripes ending with a taper rather than the squared end. I always wondered if the squared end was indeed the way they came from GM not.

Dan.. I built the house back when I was stupid enough to take on a project like that. My father, the architect, didn't know the amount of time I would be spending in the garage, 20 years later. This house is an engineering nightmare. Those 2 poles, hold up virtually the entire house. I certainly tossed around the idea of a steel beam, but so far it hasn't happened. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Perhaps I could have all my mid-west friends over for a weekend, and we can tackle the steel beam job https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif

In the mean time, I'll take some exterior pictures. even if it is 20 degs out there https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Here's another one of those after the weekend updates. Lots done, although it doesn't really show in pictures.

I got all the glass and glass moldings in. Still waiting for vent glass frame to come back from chrome. I got all the glass from Auto City Classics. It all fit perfect, and the date coding is real nice too.

I also added a few things to the engine comp. Wheel wells are ready for paint, then install.
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...e/100_2120.jpg engine

Here's a shot of the glass
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...e/100_2118.jpg glass

Pretty much finished up under the car. All the wiring is hooked up, and worked well when I put 12 volts to it all.
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...e/100_2110.jpg chassis

The parts pile is pretty small. Seat covers, grill, some odds and ends. The chrome for the bed corners is also at the chrome shop, so I can't stick the bed moldings on till there back.

Another ElCamino update: Well I'm down to a few odds and ends. All having to do with sloooooooow chrome shops. Bumpers, bed moldings, vent glass frames, all holding up the final steps. The radiator will be in Thursday. Should be able to light it up after that. Here's a few more shots, until it's completely finished.

Is the steering wheel an original piece or re-pop?

Dan.

Bill Rose 01-15-2009 01:21 AM

Re: New project coming along

Thanks for all the feedback over the past year. It's been a fun, and fairly simple project. Not much more to get pictures of for a while, except one more piece of the puzzle that arrived today.

Yes Dan, repro dash and wheel. Both are nice pieces. The original wheel was junk, not restorable. Somewhere down the road I'll get an original, and restore it though,
