Re: Vintage Wheels
They look great, especially on the '65 442. How about some F70x14 (or Gs) Coker whitewalls!

I'm confused abotu the "M/T No. 1 Mag Type" wheel (the Challenger style). It says heli-arc welded, but every one I've seen was riveted together! Verne [/ QUOTE ] Me too Verne...I have seen Raders and Sears Raders welded but not the M/T's. |
Re: Vintage Wheels
-------These Foresight wheels were all over the south Florida scene back in the day. The company must have gone after the Florida market very aggressively as I never saw them around very much anywhere else. The deep reverse often called for raised suspensions on both the front and rear, but everyone (including me) liked that look back then so nobody much cared about the loss of handling. Of course the "cool" guys all ran Bluestreak Goodyear dry racing tires on the street. Tires stuck out 3 inches or more were the norm. God forbid we ever run into a puddle!!!!!.......Bill S

Re: Vintage Wheels
I took one of the Zs out today...weather's finally getting decent! These are 15x6 Cragar G/T wheels from 1966 that I restored over the winter. Center caps were rechomed by Courtesy Metal Plating in Villa Park, IL, and none other than our own Bob G. detailed them!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3116/...e9e5a2de_o.jpg I first saw a set of rough G/Ts at the Jefferson swap meet when I was 12. Finally came across a restorable set on Ebay and picked them up last year. These are composite construction (steel rim, Al center). Fit great on the car and clear the 4-piston calipers without a spacer. This is a 27000 mile drag car that was fluffed in the mid-80s, so the tow tabs and Cragars are justified! |

Re: Vintage Wheels
I will get a few more pics. I have the traction bars off because one of them was cracked near the axle, discovered that when I had the 12 bolt out to go through it. I'm slowly going through the car and fixing what breaks....

Yes you do... that is awesome... it would go great along side the Black 69 with the traction bars and the M/T ET streets. https://www.yenko.net/photos/data/500...trip_small.jpg |

Re: Vintage Wheels Restoration
I just picked up a set of old Appliance Torq Thrust D copies and some American 200S wheels. Both need some clean up/restoration. Any tips that anyone can share on finishes both for the spokes and the rim edge? I prefer to do this myself since most of the restorers I have seen polish the rim edge and this is not the way they were new. Also, the cost of shipping the rims for restoration from the east coast to the west coast and back is pretty costly these days. Thanks for any help.

Re: Vintage Wheels Restoration
I would also like some feedback on restoring original 1960s era Torq Thrusts. I have a set of 15x6 that need to be freshened up.

Re: Vintage Wheels
Here's my wheel resto guy's work and info. Doesn't like BSers or nickel-and-dime guys but if you are serious and don't BS or waste his time he will gladly help you.
[ QUOTE ] My friend Terry Vaughan is a wheel restorer up in Burlington, WA. His specialty is '60s wheels, especially Torq-Thrusts, but he also works on newer wheels too. He is building a new website and I wanted to post it here. http://mysite.verizon.net/restdtpg/ I bought a set of old TTs from terry a few months ago and here is what he is capable of: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2.../Wheels005.jpg as well as: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a2...tTerry15x7.jpg If you have anything to add as far as Terry's site is concerned you can e-mail him at: [email protected] [/ QUOTE ] |

Here is my set of Drag Mags that I just got back from the polisher. A good polisher can restore almost anything.

Re: Vintage Wheels
I have a set of vintage Ansen Sprint slot aluminum wheels that I am taking to the polisher this week. They are in very nice condition with only a few shallow scratches here and there. The coarse finish on the back of the wheel is very rough and dirty. How should this area be finished? What instructions, specifically, should I give to the polisher to get the best end product overall. And finally, what is the best way to preserve the polished wheel?
Thanks, https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: Vintage Wheels
I dropped wheels off at polisher. Shop owner's recommendation was to media blast the backs of the wheels to clean them up. If this sounds reasonable would anyone recommend a clear coat or other protective seal over the coarse surface to aid in cleanup from road and brake soot?

Re: Vintage Wheels
I've heard of people clear powder coating the wheels after they are polished...I don't know how it hold up though?
|
Re: Vintage Wheels
Thanks Bruce. Only want to address the backs of the wheels as they would be a bear to clean up with all of the nooks/crannies/pores etc.

Re: Vintage Wheels
On the subject of wheeling polishing......can anybody recommend a vendor to remove dings & polish 70 Z-28 15x7 Trim Rings, 14x7 Rally Trim Rings, and the Stainless Dish portion of my 1970 PO-2 caps........
Major problem on dings is galvanized backing ring prevents you from hammering out defect. I would like someone to try polishing ring while mounted on turning wheel......... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...0Caps/14x7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...lyWheeljpg.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...s/BabyMoon.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...Caps/Ring2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...Caps/Ring3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...Caps/Ring5.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...x1stAnd2nd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...81stDesign.jpg |

I recently bought a full set of vintage American 15x7 Torq Thrust D's. Is there any way to date these wheels? Previous owner said they are 1966 vintage but I cannot find a date code.
Thanks, Tony |
