Searching for L78 396
1 Attachment(s)
I stumbled upon this older add from 2007 for a 396-375HP L78 engine. I have attached the add to the post. Turns out this is the original engine for the Chevelle that I have owned for about 30 years. The engine was gone when I purchased the car. The T0310JD B362705 match the numbers on my build sheet exactly. The gentleman that posted the add no longer has possession of the engine nor does he have any information about the buyer. If anyone has any information on this engine, please contact me at 724-272-1162. I think the seller lived in Ohio when the engine was sold. I would love to return this engine back to where it started life. Thank you very much. I appreciate any help!

Well this one dragged me down the research rabbit hole on Saturday. From what I can tell, at the very least, it's from a 1972 Buick Gran Sport (GS)
Highly doubt it's 1 of the 4 GSX with a 4-speed in '72. Only 7% of GS cars in '72 were 4-speeds. (8,575 total) |
Looking for any drivetrain part, MO engine, Muncie trans, or 12 bolt with 18437179 stamp.
Full VIN is 124378N437179. I have the complete owner history of this Z28 from when it was purchased new, through out it's racing history, to me, the current owner. 4 owners total, but I'm just the second registered owner since the second and third owners only raced it. Original owner confirmed and documented to me that he ordered and took delivery of this 1968 Z28. Bob Johnson, high performance manager of Scuncio Chevrolet and well know drag racer and drag car owner, also confirmed and documented the car in person, as a true Z28 he took in trade at Scuncio, and as one of his 12 or so personally owned drag cars. 11,000 original miles, all original body panels, original deluxe interior, original vinyl top, 6k red line tach, 15 inch wheel decal in glove box, etc... Thanks. |

This is a question I was asked about the 67 L78 pad picture I posted. Any thoughts on this. Larry
Hello, I just saw your post in the orphan section. That's a nice looking stamp pad. I didn't know the 323 block was used in '67 so I did a little research and found a MQ block built on the same day, July 5th 1967. (Chevrolet by the Numbers, Alan Colvin) but, the partial vin is 252630, a difference of 1,464 cars from the vin on yours. I don't see how this is possible. Could you please shed some light on this? Production was less than 1,000 per day @ Norwood. There is no picture of the stamp pad in Colvin's example. Thanks for any helpful info, always appreciated. |
It is possible because even though production may have been 1400 plus per day, only a small fraction of those cars were L-78 cars. The Hi Po units were built in batches, and stood in line to go into the next car ordered with L-78 option.
July was the last month of production for the 67 model year. Last car out was supposedly 254698, which is 3532 after the one pictured above. Any car between 251166 and 254698 could have received a July 5 L-78 engine. I have seen late May and early June parts go in Camaros built from June to very early August. |
I recently bought a 1970 Z/28 short block from the Toledo, OH area. Deck stamp is V0629CTB but I can't make out the partial VIN - could be 10N576489 (124870N576489)?
https://photos.smugmug.com/SYc-Site/...MG_4402-X4.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/SYc-Site/...MG_4386-X4.jpg |
I see 10N592~(or it's a 3)1~(or it's a 4)39.
|
I think you're better at this than I am - just found a post on the 2nd gen site showing a 0613CTB block with VIN 576323, so something in the 59xxxx range makes more sense for this block.

Got a better look at it and cleaned it up a bit, it’s either 124870n576139 or 124870n576439.
