will this do?

Or you could have the choice of an upper, middle or lower bunk!

Lower...I foresee night terrors.

The first one looks like what I can afford in the Toronto housing market.

By October we were ready to squeeze in one more exterior project before the colder weather hit.
The plan was to replace a front wall that was mostly glass and 50-60 year old framing a door. We planned to do one side at a time as the two together could not be completed in the time frame we had available.
Ordered up the new framing and steel door.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sqopowtnj.jpeg
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sxfie5n6g.jpeg

With a 7:00AM start on Oct 7 we got the glass removed and some of the siding off within an hour.

Lloyd demonstrates the latest in correct position while preparing to start up the sawsall. Notice the new approach to safety gear compared to a year ago when he would be 8 feet up a ladder, with no safety equipment at all. Thats Lloyds son Rob in the background, master carpenter.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...swkmasb1y.jpeg

Didn't take long to have everything loosened up for the demolition bin.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sxauljjm5.jpeg

Rob and Lloyd were too busy working to take any interim photos but by nightfall, the studs were up and a combination of permanent and temporary sheet was in place to lock up for the night.

By late October we were finishing off the siding interior and exterior. we opted for the corrugated steel in and out as neither one of us wanted to do drywall more than we needed to.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ssxpd124p.jpeg

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psitir3tcv.jpg

Finished entrance from the inside, vertical cedar to match other areas of shop.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psze0rymp5.jpg

And here is a front shop, areas to the left of here is the other half of the front, this will be completed by the end of April with a new steel roll up door giving parking and storage access to one more car.

Taking a break from shop renovations and been doing some car work (what a concept).
Recent tasks include a lot of media blasting so it was time to do some maintance on the blast cabinet. Have had this one since 1997.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...pszdscyhhk.jpg

New Led light strips.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sfugouvei.jpeg

And new gloves and window shield.

Would you please describe your Commercial Hollow Metal entrance door(s) so I can shop online for similar.

Do they swing out for security ???

Brand name etc

I want to replace my cheap wood (metal clad) swing in shop door with something like yours.

My shop is stick framed 2x6 with Cedar Lap Sided Exterior

Thanks

Chuck, we installed three of these doors, they are all 36x80 hung inside their own frame. The frame can be dismantled for install in an existing opening. The door frame can expand up to 10 inches.
It opens outward for security but primarily fire and building code. I think the brand is Accurate Door, which is a local manufacture. Its not carried by the big box stores. Ours were acquired locally though an outfit, Jacks Building Supplies. Additional hardware we installed were automatic closer and double Medeco locks.

Good luck with your plans.

Paul

I like your LED light strips. How do you think they're going to hold up? I'm going to "restore" my blast cabinet and lighting is one of the things I'd like to upgrade.

One option from the LED store was plastic covers to protect the strips. I am just going to use clear packaging tape that can be replaced when its gets clouded up. We have used Led strips before but they got damaged by a guest user.

Thanks. I'll have to see if I can get crafty. Even my glass viewing window gets hammered after a while.

Are you using plastic protective shields, available from Harbor freight and Eastwood.

Unfortunately it was already too late when I found out about them. I have a spare glass panel. When I go to change it out I'll pick up some of those protective shields.

When we started on the building 27 months ago we were dedicating the front room to parts storage. Not long after we started reos we were considering configuration for additional car staorage. The east front room had unrestricted access to the street and the though of converting it into a single car storage, and still room for parts was hatched. It was not a priority two years ago but put on the too do list. This past March we agreed that May would be a good time to get this done.
The plan was to demo the old wall and build a new one with an opening for a car.
Here is what we started with:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...psxoiowbea.jpg

Friday May 18th, construct a temporary support wall.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sj3acg9x7.jpeg

8: AM Saturday May 19,the man door gets opened for the first time in xx years.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...syzwrkori.jpeg

The demo begins
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...syfxf0lfx.jpeg

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sylacksru.jpeg

Thats Mike J doing the demo, he has been assisting us on many occasions. He is good at demo. Picks stuff apart in small chunks.

By noon we had a cleared opening to start the new construction.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...swbieqjwg.jpeg

Canuck 05-22-2018 05:39 PM

By 2:00 PM we had started the stick build, after 4 trips to Home Depot (less than a mile away) to get the right materials.

Like everything else on this building project we over build, level and plum.
If 2x6's are called for we used 2x8.
If 3 boards on the header are called for we use 4.
Header gets screwed, glued and power nailed ,with Lloyd emptying the chamber several times. The way he works that power nailer I swear he wants to be an artillery gunner.
The level on top of the header is picture perfect, given the age of the building this was a major accomplishment.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...swgxwfj35.jpeg

By 5:30 Saturday we were framed!!

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sif6kzefk.jpeg

Time for a meal, tidy up tools, go home and feed the dog.

Canuck 05-22-2018 05:51 PM

Early in the evening we started to close in the wall. The priority was to have it secure overnight and resume outside work the next day.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...srn5a49o6.jpeg

So Here is where we left off on Saturday night, permanent and temprary sheeting was in place. left side pressure treated plywood on the bottom and regular on top. The right side sheeting was just to secure the opening.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sqfnswc9d.jpeg

Canuck 05-22-2018 05:57 PM

Sunday Morning 9:AM start, Mike P, a shop regular committed to be there at 9, he showed at 11:00. Mike J. <his demo work done took the day off!

Game plan, get the wall ready for door install on Tuesday Morning.
To Do list
Tyvek
Insulation
vapor Barrier
Trim out inside for door install.
Stand back and be proud of a job well done.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...scmxorklc.jpeg

I have a penchant for "waste not want not", so we used up the Tyvek from other work on the building and bought a small roll to finish up. Lloyd was not happy that we would not be numbers matching on the Tyvek.

Closed up for the day with the opening ready for the door guys.

Tuesday May 22, door guys showed up at 7:45 30 minutes ahead of schedule:

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...syiqucbps.jpeg

They said 90 minutes to do the install, they were done in one hour.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ss5x7lzyb.jpeg

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sb7mts8dt.jpeg

Last steps will be to trim out front of building and finish inside, should take about a week, time permitting. This will be followed by re landscaping the front to do away with the lawn.

Tracker1 05-25-2018 11:46 AM

Nice work guys. Yeah, that grass needs to be replaced with a concrete launch pad.

markinnaples 05-25-2018 01:19 PM

The door is manufactured locally in Vancouver BC by Smart Garage Door, the door insulation doesn't have a specified R rating, instead its described as "Reflective 98% Thermal Break Radiant Barrier Blanket".

Edgemontvillage 06-03-2018 01:32 AM

Bit more progress today, trimmed out the new roll-up door frame with rough cedar and added a 4" header to visually match height of man-door. All primed and caulked, ready for paint.

Last post,June 6, a lot has happened, all with the intention of completing the last yard, more like the last mile.
What did we do?
Completed siding.
Completed Drainage
New compressor.
First the building.
In the fall I ordered all the steel and trim I needed(or thought I needed) to complete the building. with the front construction completed by the end of May it was time to install the last of the trim and sheeting.
Obstacle #1, some of the drip rail has been used inside so we were short. Ordreed up the two pieces, new pieces were not wide enough, re order, wait one more week.
Got all trim in place and started on installing the siding, many cuts needed to be made on the remaining sheets and I calculated we would finish the job with no extra sheets, wrong. On Friday July 13 ,installing the last sheet I found it was a leftover from the side and 1 inch shorter. Re order time!!!!
The guys at Dicks Lumber responded quickly and by Wednesday we had what we needed, not one sheet but two, they must have decided ,"these guys always screw up the order so lets ship an extra, we know they will need it".
Sooooooooooo, finally on Friday July 20th, the last sheet went up!!!!
Lloyd, ready to cut.
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sus8zemjo.jpeg

Measuring for the screw holes:

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...sgrtzyefz.jpeg

Driving the last screw.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...shbkvwytg.jpeg

And so we are finished the exterior of the building 2 years and 5 months after we started.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...s5jdfmg13.jpeg

A view from the inside:

Next post will be about the drainage.

Canuck 08-16-2018 04:06 PM

Thanks Eddie
Waiting for the city to install a new curb for access to that door, then Lloyd adds the wisteria, rhododendrons, maybe a cactus plant and we are done on the outside.
Inside we are fully functional with a new compressor(next submission) and now using the paint booth. and almost forgot the 65 inch TV always on Velocity Chanel or Golf.
