(A) it was mistamped at Tonawanda and corrected at Tonawanda before shipping to KC, or

(B) it was correctly stamped at Tonawanda as initially built (as a manual engine), but for some reason was changed to an automatic before going into a car (either changed at Tonawanda before shipping, or changed at KC after it got there), and that letter got over-stamped then. July 2 is very late in the production year, so maybe they checked orders vs. inventory and had to change one or more manual motors to AT motors to meet the remaining supply needs?

At Flint Assembly (at least on the frame line) the correct repair was to "X" out the offending character and then hand stamp the correct digit or letter in that proximity. No overstamping (and never any grinding).

Usually there was not just one vehicle involved. In the case of getting the VINs out of sequence you would have a number of vehicles stamped wrong before someone would notice, which would require dispatching your repair man (or "Quality Man", the foreman's right hand man) to determine the scope of the issue and work his way back with hammer and punch set in hand, all while the line kept running.

Did anyone here end up with the 69 impala hardtop?

I was watching the sale of the Boss 429 online and there were two bidders from Nebraska running it up and occasionally one from Iowa. I've seen other estate auctions where 2 siblings run a vehicle up into the stratosphere in order to win the auction. Not saying that's what happened here, but it's a possibility given the bidder's locations.

It was my guess that it was a family member running up the Boss 429 Mustang. They had settlement money to spend. I was hoping to get the 69 Impala hardtop but it went well beyond what I thought was comfortable. If the video of it running didn't make you want it, you are dead inside.

I wonder if there wasn't some legal requirement that the cars be sold as part of the estate settlement and the proceeds distributed to the heirs. Then, if an heir bids up the car they end up with at least a percentage of the money spent.

I'm thinking the '70 Z28 was pretty expensive, even in today's market. Nice to see the Gen 2's getting some recognition, but over 90K seems pricey.
