'70-2 Olds are definitely galvanized and my bet is Ryan's '69 is the same finish on the straps. GOOD progress Ryan.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes Jason:-)
Thanks for the compliment and feedback Patton:-) Ryan PS: I got a way better face shield and an extra lens..... hope I can see what the heck I am grinding this weekend....... |

Good progress Ryan !
I gotta get started on mine someday....... |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The girls were away this weekend so Jamie and I got a couple visits to the igloo.
I wire wheeled more floor, the area above the rear end, and started the passenger rear wheel well. Found a few small rust spots but nothing major. We removed the master cylinder for rebuild, the clutch and brake pedals for new bushings and to remove the extra brackets welded onto the clutch. We took the heater box off and started to look at how to get the heater core out. We (Jamie) removed the clutch shaft bellows off the firewall. Lots of fun, and lots more to go. Pictures tomorrow. PS: I looked at my schedule and with this slow period I am two months behind:-( And the floors/firewall are 19 visits away from done. Time to add a mid week visit somehow. |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Nick Morocco is busy working on my third Muncie. (That is totally reasonable right?)
The M22Z gear set is on order and he is getting a Heim joint linkage to reduce the friction in all the swivel points. (Don't tell the purists) (Do tell the DAY-2 guys) This Trans will be a mix of Frankenstein parts as numbers are not a concern, but it will be the same input and output spline as my other Muncies. 10 spline input, 27 spline output. Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Locate and find your hidden firewall VIN stamp....I think I see an upside down 2?
Stick your hand way down the heater blower hole and see how much debris and leaves are trapped inside the bottom cowl corners.....use a long vacuum hose and air hose to loosen the debris and suck it all up. Also check how weak the metal is in the lower firewall drop corners.....very prone to rust in that weak area. Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I will check Dan, I remember finding the VIN on the frame:-) Now I need to find it on the firewall under the heater box:-)
I pulled out a lot of insulation material that someone made a home out of:-( I will clean and check the cowl as you mentioned, so far looks perfect:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I stopped at the machine shop to see my engine progress and to pick up unneeded items to take home.
They are progressing well. Block and heads are magnafluxed and hot tanked and or shot blasted. Crank is machined 0.010" 0.010" They bolted the main caps with ARP bolts and line honed. Clevite bearings have arrived. The decks have been cleaned up (0.006" by memory) Heads have bronze guide liners installed and they are starting to measure for W31 sized valve cutting, and hardened exhaust valve seat cutting. The valves are just in the heads for mock up. The only issue right now is 350 Olds piston availability. The block is already 0.030" over and the machinist has measured each bore and is not comfortable re-honing/re-ringing. I was going to use the old faithful, cost effective TRW/Speed Pro Forged Piston and 5/64, 5/64, 3/16 rings but they only come in standard or 0.030", so the machinist is quoting Wiseco 0.040" semi-custom pistons with better/thinner rings 1/16, 1/16, 3/16. Lots of options and I have researched the heck out of them. Ryan |

I am looking for standard bore 425 pistons 4.125" or 0.040" or larger 350 pistons.
I am looking for Forged Speed Pro or similar pistons. A few Olds experts are on the prowl.... Ryan |

Get back under that car.....the pistons will be found.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I only squeezed in a few hours of wire wheeling.....
I got 25% of the drivers side rear wheel well cleaned up. There is a little rust where I knew there was rust but I didn't really find any surprises. I need to increase the visit frequency somehow........ Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Look at it this way.....washing all your dirty clothes.....for only a couple of hours grinding.....is just not worth it.....you need 6-8 hour days.
GET TO IT Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Get those seats out of the car and stored safely. Nothing good can happen with them in the car. My memory is telling me they don't need covers? If so, remove them, clean them, dress them and then wrap them in some old sheets and put them out of harm's way. If the steering wheel is original and nice, do the same.

The front seat covers need replaced a little down the road but not as part of this project. (I have them in the budget but will likely replace them later). The back seat looks good as far as I can tell. I am only cleaning the underside of the car and the firewall, I have been blocking off holes in the car as I go. Am I missing something? Why take out the seats and the steering wheel? Ryan |

If seats are staying put, best cover them w/ drop sheets or something to protect from dirt/filings/sparks...it will get inside no matter how hard you try to stop it happening. And best use fireproof protection where req'd also known/good Fire Extinguishers always ready at hand. Same w/ all glass, get it taped off and protected too as many well intentioned projects have gone awry when later realized that glass has been damaged by grinding/wire wheeling etc. Whatever the individual task, best always stop for a moment and look carefully at the big picture to make sure all areas are protected whether they be chrome/glass/interior parts. Otherwise, keep up the awesome work Ryan! ~ Pete |

I just got back and cleaned up from a successful visit to the igloo:-)
I completed 50% of both rear wheel wells. They are tough!!! Agree my schedule needs review and reallocations:-( So far nothing is a show stopper for my goal of one since drive in 2017 before the snow flies:-) Dan: You are welcome any time to Canada, let's work on this old car together!!! Ryan |

I have a goal of taking Al Stager and my Dad for ice cream in 2017. I will skip the front clip restoration if needed. I can take it off and restore it over a future winter if needed. Ice cream is important:-) Ryan |

My point exactly. I know Al and Dad will enjoy this cruise for ice cream, even if RamblerDealer has to drag us home on his tilt load:-) Ryan Dan: Make plans to enjoy this event with us just before snow flies 2017. |

I haven't shared till now that my Dad has had CLL for 19 years (Chronic Lymphositic Leukemia)
We are currently in a battle with his Cancer and the CLL is very strong this time it is active. We are gathered around Dad and praying non-stop. Ice cream with Dad in 2017 would be a miracle. Ryan |
