Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Hello, Hello, hello:-)
I have had a little too much "quiet time". Summer is great!! Update: I think I have plans/parts almost bought all the items relating to the transmission. Lakewood 15100 bellhousing, front cover, and clutch fork. like new. Steel flywheel 27 spline pinion yoke The Stagers put a new pressure plate and clutch in before I bought it so the LuK assy will be used. u joints are here from in-line tube driveshaft is powder coated M20 is completely rebuilt ready to go transmission mount ready Competition plus shifter is rebuilt and installed.... but need to see if the offset for console will be an issue? I bought a 10 spline clutch install tool i still need a pilot bearing or bushing and a throw out bearing. Is anybody in Lubbock Texas driving to MCACN? willing to transport my bellhousing? I assume shipping costs will suck. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
what u/joints did they send? 4 spd car you'll want a good greaseless u/j or even better, lakewood u/joints
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Brand new normal u joints with grease fittings.....
Lakewood u joints? Do they fit the standard yokes? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
This is a slippery slope....... A few safety upgrades and all of a sudden I will have a Ford 9 inch in there:-)

Pretty sure Terry was winding me up, he was smiling when he was making the movements of smashing the firewall with a sledge hammer and I went for it hook line and sinker:-)

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I feel a little better about these parts. (I am learning what works with what)
Plan: Lakewood 15100 bell housing, and fork, and front shield in Texas I will buy, but we have been trying to work out shipping:-( terrible! I will find a less expensive way to get these parts by hook or by crook. Maryland flywheel and slip yoke are good to go, as I have been convinced there were be threaded holes for the 10.5 inch clutch or the 11.0 inch clutch:-) I hope to pick these up from somebody (Albert Galdi?) driving from that part of the world to MCACN (I should ask first:-) Moving ahead and also I am happy to be making the car safer. Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have a request into Fastenal to check shipping costs.
I have an order to pick up Friday (I hope) wire wheels and a nice Millwaukee angle grinder. I have a call in to the machine shop to chat about my engine rebuild. I really plan to get going again Saturday!!!! Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I stopped by the engine machine shop and my crank (out of the warranty short block) is ground 0.010" under and 0.010" under.
My order of grinder etc. got delayed:-( Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I used what grinder and wire wheel I had around to get started tonight.
The layer of crusty rusty stuff cleaned off fairly easily and the metal underneath looks perfect at the sample spot. Metal looks pretty good after the clean up.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
You know what I am going to say.....now is the time to get the firewall and cowl done too....it just makes sense. Take your time and do it right!
Do it You will be happy you did. Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
i plan to restore the firewall as well as the floor, but I am starting at the back so the harder part is completed first.
I plan to sneak out for another hour of grinding today:-) As we talked a while ago, this is awkward work so many shorter visits will be much more efficient. When I get to the firewall I probably need to remove a few items, the master needs to be real webbed/rebuilt so I have that planned. The other items like windshield washer motor may need to be removed to access behind it. (It will be cleaned only for now and restored as a winter project in future) I need to be careful not to do too many MAW diversions. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Indeed, remove everything off the firewall.....including heater box, replace the heater core.....nothing worse than having a car finished to find a leaky and faulty heater core.
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Yes I have a budget/cost item in my spread sheet for a NAPA heater core. I have the hoses, and clamps ready.
Is there a gasket on the heater box? By memory the heater box should be a different gloss than the underside/firewall? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
You should check into getting your original heater core rebuilt instead of buying a NAPA replacement.
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I didn't know heater cores are rebuilt:-)
I will ask the shop that will be doing my rad:-) Ryan |
