Water doesn't smell like anything, so why does rain produce a pleasant aroma after it falls? Well, it's because of a molecule called geosmin, created by soil-dwelling bacteria. When rain falls, it creates air pockets, which contain small amounts of geosmin. The rain traps and then releases these air pockets, dispersing geosmin into the air, where it's free to travel to human sniffers. The smell of rain even has a name: 'Petrichor.'

In April of that year, a rain gauge in the Hawaiian town of Hanalei recorded 49.69 inches of rainfall in one day

Anyone who has to take a prescription medication every day can attest to the fact that opening and closing a childproofed bottle is extremely frustrating. But if you take a prescription medication and you don’t have any young ones running around the house to worry about, all you have to do is flip your cap to un-childproof it for good.

The color is officially called 'national school bus glossy yellow,' and it's standard across the United States. Back in 1939, a conference funded by the Rockefeller Foundation attracted transportation officials from all-then 48 states, who came together and agreed on a number of safety standards for school buses, including the color. Yellow is very visible, even in early-morning or late-evening light, and black lettering on a yellow background is easy to read. It took until 1984 for all the school buses in the country to meet the standard

Bakers in medieval England are thought to have come up with the idea of tossing in an extra roll or loaf of bread to make sure their customers were happy. While 12 eggs are easy to quantify, baked goods can turn out all different sizes because of differences in how much the dough rises. Plus, many bakers didn't have accurate scales to weigh their flour, according to Britannica. Being accused of cheating could result in punishments including flogging, so bakers hedged their bets and included 13 (or sometimes 14) items to make sure nobody complained.
