Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I like gaskets with no goop but if needed I will use the black RTV sealant.
The fill port is needed now, not removing the rear end to refill:-) Thanks Ryan Agree nice to fix now vs later:-) |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
What you like.....will not fix it.
The fill plug was designed for a reason.....use it, my friend Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I am picking up my Canadian made fuel tank after work:-)
I bought a Spectra W31 fuel system, tank, sending unit 3/8, with 1/4 return, and 3 line fuel pump, 3/8 inlet, 1/4 return, plus output line to carb. I even verified the pump output pressure as Eric on here warned of high pressure issues with some suppliers pumps. The great part is I bought these parts from a car guy (he is so excited about my build:-) at the local Ideal Supply/Napa so any issues are easy to deal with. I will have him set out some black RTV (I very much dislike using sealants where they should not be needed but I dislike leaks much more) I Appretiate the recommendation as always Dan, just something I challenge regularly at work. I have a trip planned soon to Wixom MI soon so I will switch out a few parts at InLine Tube otw. I accidentally bought a Chevelle pinion bumper instead of the rear end axle bumpers, and one outer tie rod is not correct, easy fixes and they are very accommodating with any requests. I am looking forward to visiting their facility. I wish I had time to visit a few MI guys but we are going to MI and back same day..... Next time. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I use Spectra Tanks in all my builds and I purchase them all through Napa. Here is another Tip,
Open and unwrap the gas tank when you are the Napa store - check the tank for any dents. I had two different occasions were two tanks had two very small dents, they obviously replaced the Tank. We have a Ryan Weaver - crossing the border Priceless! Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Note to self: check for dents.
Nice tip, that will save time later especially as these parts are going to be stored till I am ready to use them. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Even parts in storage somehow acquire dents

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Or better still, you score a part thinking "I really need this", go to put it away and discover you already have the part.
There are other versions of this story with different outcomes. |

Car guys be good people!!!
Dave "Northernforce" sent me an E-Mail: "Hi Ryan Hope all is well-enjoy reading your post- a few weeks back I was going to call you when I saw the rear end was going together-but I had a plumbing incident at home and spent a few days fixing it right-I had noticed no posi tag on the cover-can I make a suggestion-the tag is somewhere-safe-you will find it sometime and just laugh-be it in the glove box or in your paper records-before you put the rear end cover back on without the tag -then have to take the bolt out to put the tag on -this may cause a leak-I checked my stock and I have one NOS tag left-you can have it (just give me the other one back when you find it-if you don't find it -no big deal)-I am home this weekend if you want to drop over or I can mail it to you-but please take this tag and install before you put the cover on one last time!!!Talk to you soon!!!" Dave gave me the tag as a gift so I felt bad temporarily misplacing it...... I read his E-mail and thought, hmm glove box........ which is in my cupboard....... YUP!!!! Thanks Dave!! Added these flex hose brackets tonight, they say LH and RH and look right compared to the manuals....
I am not tightening all the lock nuts up till I have it all figured out. Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5382.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5386.jpg |

More progress:-)
Is spending money progress? I picked up my Spectra tank (no dents:-), Spectra sending unit, and Spectra fuel pump, plus black RTV:-) I also ordered my SMS headliner and material to repair the drivers side door panel. I stopped in and checked on the body at the igloo, looks great, lots of patina!!!! I am very excited about these wonderful parts but feel a little guilty:-( A little something for Daddy is ok too:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Did you ask for material to do the sun visors too?
Dan |

Dan </div></div> Thanks for the reminder. I don't want to touch my visors as they are mint but they may stand out as original/old after replacing the headliner. I will ask for the material either way. Now you jogged my memory, a while back you mentioned to get sail panel material as well? Or do the sail panels come as part of the headliner? Let me guess additional cost:-) Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I sent them a request for quote for the visor material, sail panel material, and the rear deck material.
Cant wait for the bill:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
sail panel material is included with the headliner...one of the few items from SMS that were actually delivered as promised!
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
That's good:-)
I am concerned about this company but have thrown caution to the wind..... Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have a plan for SMS:-)
If service or product is not excellent I will visit them and make my order with the owner or the company :-) Teamwork!! Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Make sure that who ever installs the new material into the sail panels and the sun visors....
that the material is directionally installed correctly - an easy mistake for a rookie. Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Will do:-)
Mocked up the exhaust and rear brake drums today:-) Ryan |

Hello Olds fans:-)
I mad a little "progress" if cleaning up and gaining a 9 square foot space is "progress"-) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_0029.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_0028.jpg I wanted to start the front drum brakes but step one was a no-go:-( My J shaped brake line and wheel cylinder are not compatible, the thread is too big in the ws:-( I will return them. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_0023.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_0026.jpg This is what things used to look like;-( https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_0022.jpg |

Many thanks:-) One step at a time, seems to be working so far. I stood in the garage cleaning up for a while because I was stumped as to what I should do next yesterday, turns out cleaning up was the next step and felt pretty good to get organized:-) I like to work from front to back or back to front, and that helps me get going. I look from one end to the other and either make a list of items I need to restore or order replacements, or if I have the parts prepped I install them:-) It takes quite a bit of prep to have a part ready to install!!!! Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Inline Tube called right away to explain that my wheel cylinders are 1964-1967, and they had an error previously in their system. Now corrected and they said to bring them in for the correct parts:-)
Great customer service!! Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
What is old is new again........
I was given the contact information and a recommendation to discus my engine build with one of the lead machinists at the very first place I researched and visited. We had a quick chat to discuss main goals and such, now we will get together and discuss the details. I am looking to push my limits and assemble the engine myself. I am learning so much and enjoying this restoration so much it would be a shame to miss this opportunity to build my own engine. I will receive a machining quote, and have a parts cost figured out, (I will check if everything is the same or less cost purchased through this company) I also will have a time and material rate so any fine work such as degre-ing the cam, or checking valve train geometry can be done T&M This feels right and if I make a mistake I will learn from it. The risk is mine to take and I am getting off the Porch!!! As you know I was hands off for the M20 transmission rebuild, and that has been a major jump forward. Nick has offerered to show me how to assembly a Muncie 4 speed:-) I will take him up on this, possibly to assemble my M22? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
If the machinist is good..assembly should be a breeze..take your time...slow and gentle. no distractions

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I visited the machine shop after work and toured the shop.
We then discussed each process and the corresponding machine or machines. Then we discussed each item on my scope of work. In most cases I understood what the normal process would be and in which areas improvements, or special care are required for a street engine which will be rigorously tested for 1320 feet at a time. He had no concerns working with a DIY customer and mentioned many of their customers do the assembly just like I am considering. We will work on the details and costs over the next two weeks and then hopefully I will have an engine plan. Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I got all excited last night and after the usually run a round, diner this, practice that, I snuck out to the garage and stayed out till 11:00 PM:-)
I boxed up any labeled baggies from my container shelf as either items that I have already replaced, or as items that will be replaced shortly, this way I don't have to dig through everything to look at a fastener, or a clip. Then I started making labeled baggies of item off my extra engine. (This engine was bought used and installed by Al and his daughter at her high school, so it has the original accessories installed on it) This extra engine is not a W31, as you can see dished pistons, regular harmonic damper, small valves in the heads, etc, but the accessories are gold!! I am getting my original front upper control arm washers coated, and noticed they are two different sizes, does the big one go to the front? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_0036.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_0037.jpg Ready to disassemble https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_0039.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_0040.jpg Ignition hold down, this is an HEI, yuk https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_0042.jpg Alternator brackets https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_0043.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_0044.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_0045.jpg Ryan |
