Not just "a Ford", but more specifically a Ford Model T.

That may be the reason that we standardized on driving from the LH side of the vehicle - because that is where the steering wheel is on a Model T Ford.

Since the DeLorean was virtually a primary character, the filmmakers wanted to get the audio just right for the motion of the gull-wing doors. Oddly, the audio team didn’t like the sound of the actual doors opening and closing. They chose to use the humming sound of electric car windows.
