Re: OLD RACERS
Verne
That shot was taken in June of 1970 at West Hampton. The car was a 409 - 4 bbl with a 4 spd that was from the Bronx somewhere up near West Chester County. It was always around and ran like hell. That's all I remember, I'll see if I have any other shots - but I don't recall any. Thanks Glenn |
Re: OLD RACERS
Hey Verne, that "360 HP" lettered hood on the '61 Biscayne jumped out at me also. It is quite interesting with all the winner stickers on the back windows and the fact that it was still being campaigned nine years later. The car reminds me of the original Old Reliable I that was raced by Jenkins/Strickler out of Ammon R. Smith. I want to say that car was a maroon '61 Biscayne from the same general region. It probably went the way of most old race cars being passed around until they finally just disappear.

Re: OLD RACERS
Thanks Glenn. I'm a little surprised that '61 '09 lasted as long as it did. Chevy had a lot of problems with those new castings; so much so that they discontinued production of them before the end of the model year. They only sold 142 of them!
Mark, that's what caught my eye too. I was wondering if it could have been the same car after Ammon R Smith got rid of it, but the 'Ol Reliable had a long white scoop on the hood by the time they stopped racing it. Glenn, one other question: One of the photos in the staging lanes shows a '63 Impala SS, white. Was that also West Hampton in '70? Funny thing.....a friend of mine owned a car just like that, black vinyl top and all when he lived on the Island. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Great shots....Thanks https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gifVerne |
Re: OLD RACERS
[b]
Verne That '61 sticks in my mind because I had a '65 Impala SS 409 that I had the misfortune to run up against him with. I don't remember the car having a pedigree like that, but it was a long time ago. The way tech was at Hampton that car could have had newer and higher horsepower '09 in it and still been running as a 360. The shot of the '63 behind the Willys was taken at Hampton also, but in June of '69. I believe that Willys is an early shot of John Olcotts restored "Russo & Santo's" record holder. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...5/olcott21.jpg - - Thanks, Glenn |

Re: OLD RACERS
A lot of great old pics. This weekend at Atco there is the Nostalgia Super Stockers meet and I think I might be going to it. Does anyone remember a 1963-1965 Corvette that ran modified production? It was called "The Dancing Bear" and there was a picture of a bear on its hind legs. A guy by the name of Chip Banney owned the car.

Re: OLD RACERS
------Cool Corvette!!! Appears to be a 64. Someone was using thier head when they thought to block off the grill cavity as that was a major source of lift on the big end. Those things didnt steer real well at all when the grill opening was open and the front end was high as was the fad at that time........Bill S

Also from Pomona...Al Padron Vega... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...%2082/tn_3.jpg [/ QUOTE ] What year was this image taken? I am guessing the early 80's. Couldnt believe my eyes when I saw this one! The latter owner of this vehicle was Pro-Stock Chuck, who ran this car with a destroked BB and a stroked SBC under the 400 CI number. It ran a powerglide. Even the paint scheme was still the same for years. GOD! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/ooo.gif It had the Dick DeMets' Race Cars sponsor name on it ! I believe that shop was over in the Hawthorne/Torrance area. Man I'm gettin old... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif As I recall it was a constant competitor to the PAK-RAT Vega Wagon ran by the guys over at Downey Service Center, Ronny Markum I believe his name was! Re: OLD RACERS
[b] About two years ago, my wife, daughter, grandson and I were out doing the garage sale circuit
one Saturday morning. I was elected to stay in the car with my grandson as he was just an infant while the women went to see if there was anything worthwhile. My daughter came back and said - you have to come see this garage. They were selling mostly household items but because of the slight drizzle it was set up in the front of an elongated three car garage. As you walked in there was a blue 35 Ford phaeton, another thirties Ford and a couple of older cars. The newer cars were complete with the older ones going under some major restoration work. As I looked at the cars ignoring the items for sale I saw an old set of cheater slicks mounted on steel wheels in the corner. I asked the lady there, what are the slicks for? She had no idea what I was talking about and said I'll get my Dad. Her Dad came in, introduced himself as Ed and explained the were for his hot rod, would I like to see it? Over in the corner was another car covered with blankets I had not even noticed. As he uncovered it he told me it was his old hot rod from the fifties/sixties, a 31 Ford if I remember correctly. Its a real period piece and he had some pictures of it racing, I think at Cecil County. He said he had ran it again a few years ago, but because of the lack of safety equipment could not really make a full pass. He did not want to change anything so he had not been back to the track. It has some great period parts including aircraft seat belts. I spent about an hour talking to Ed and looking at his cars while my family left me to explore the rest of the neighborhood. We went to a car show Memorial Day weekend and saw the car again. I could not find Ed, but today I had my camera. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t.../garage013.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t.../garage014.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...garage014a.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...garage014b.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t.../garage015.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...garage015a.jpg - - Check out the rear suspension - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t.../garage017.jpg - |

Re: OLD RACERS
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That gold 60 Corvette has got to be my old car and the only Vette I ever owned. Everything down to the missing grille, red lines on the front, the M/T's on 10" chrome reverse on the rear and that gold repaint and white soft top is identical to the one I bought in 1969 (actually traded a restored 64 442 HT even up that I resurrected from a total wreck with a new frame). Even the mufflers hanging down. Engine was sickand drinking oil, but original. It had a 3 speed in it. Was very low mileage. Sold it for the down payment on our first house soon afterwards. Had a friend that raced a small block Chev rail build the stock engine into a very hot 301. It was from somewhere around there, gotta be it. Anyone know anything else about this car? Oh yeah. More than doubled my money on that car and was tickled to death when I got $1600 for it. Only car we've owned that my wife got pulled over by a cop when she let it rip the night we got it. She got off with a warning, I'd have been in jail. |
