As a city slicker it's always a novelty to visit places that had no electricity in 1975. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Old photos

Two different cameras with different lenses that have different focal settings. The old camera drew in the background and made it look closer while the new, probably compact digital camera, makes the hills look a little farther away. Definitely the same location, photographed with different cameras/lanses/focal and field-of-view properties, taken 30 years apart. I think it's neat that the road is still there ans still the way it was back in the old days. Perhaps there should be a "reunion" drag event held there today?

I wish i'd had the presence of mind to find a couple cars with aluminum slot mags and air shocks and pose them on the road with a few guys that look like a Greatful Dead tribute band. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Well, I went by there today and took a couple of photos with my truck. It was great to smell the sagebrush again. It brought the memories back.

There's a hayfield now where it was just sagebrush before, but otherwise unchanged.
The air is full of smoke from fires in Oregon.

TomP 09-25-2008 06:40 AM

Re: Old photos

Sure that isn't burnout smoke still lingering? You really have the perfect angle on that first shot. The second shot looks like the photographer was further down the road and zooming in. I kind of assumed the crack in the road was the starting line area.

StriperSS 09-25-2008 08:00 AM

Re: Old photos

I think the roads been repaved a few times since then. And I didn't have any photos with me either. I just went for an aimless drive, and ended up going by there.
Next time I'll take my camera with a 200 mm lens to try to duplicate the shots. The guy with the El Camino still has it and maybe I can entice him to pose again.

Now that would be cool. If he doesn't have hair anymore maybe find a shaggy wig and some plaid bellbottoms. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Old photos

I went to the races in Cawston when I was 16, it was great to see the old pictures.
Do you remember a blue 427 4 speed first generation Camaro? I think it was from Rutland and he drove hard. I often wonder if that was a "special" Camaro. I know it left a lasting impression on me.
There was a 1970 blue Trans-am from Oliver that was always fast. The owner's name was Rick.
Around 1977 there were races on "Blacksage Road" near Oliver. A group from Salmon Arm called the "Shuswap Quarter Milers"(Valiant Attempt) would come down as well a Plymouth from Vernon called "Canadian Hemi Express". Later I would see these cars race in Spokane at the "AHRA Nationals"
Do you remember or better yet have pictures of these memorable cars?

StriperSS 02-15-2010 07:42 PM

Re: Old photos

No, I don't remember any of those cars, but I didn't get to every race either.
I'll try and add to this thread again.

There were 2 matching green Camaros, Suddenly and Suddenly II. They belonged to a couple of brothers from Washington State, last name Frizzel. Both had green tinted headlights

That road we raced on was in Cawston, just east of Keremeos.

As stiperSS said....

"This next series of photos is from 1975 on a section of old highway between Osoyoos and Keremeos BC. A bunch of guys got together and made arrangements with local authorities to close it off a few times that summer for drag racing. Word got around and it was pretty well attended. Cars from the southern interior of BC, and a few Okanagan County, Washington cars ran there. No timing equipment at first, but a good time was had by all. I did relief flag starting duties, but mostly took photos. I did run my 4 spd W31 there for the one time it was open in 1976. It shut down after it was determined that the insurance that they had wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
The local RCMP constable fully supported this as well. You'll see his police car in the background of a couple of the photos. (454 Biscayne ) Of course there was an ambulance and tow truck there too."

Hi John, I was fortunate enough to be on the 'Southern Garage Tour' a few weeks ago and were on that exact road. There have been some significant changes over the years but it still remains a beautiful part of BC. By the way my 55 Gasser and L72 Biscayne arrived last week but fortunately they transited through Calgary not Summerland (no abuse on the way) LOL.

StriperSS 06-07-2012 08:54 PM

Re: Old photos

Well, I'd certainly like to see your cars, maybe at the Penticton Beach Cruise coming up? Garage tours sound like fun. If you're ever in Summerland, my wife and I have started an antique business, and I have a car memorabilia section with diecast cars, auto art, and literature. Pop in and say hi!

Re: Old photos

So tonight I was showing my father-in-law these photos, when his mouth falls open, and he points and says, "That's my car!" This was him in the Road Runner racing back then. It was a 383, Torqueflite, and he'd swapped the gears for better off the line performance.
His daughter was in the crowd, and I didn't know her then.

Reminds me of a story. Friend of mine visited Boston (from Ohio) once and had her picture taken while site seeing. She later met a guy from Boston and married him. They were going thru old pictures and there she was on the corner in boston. The husband said that is my dads car going around the corner!

This was sanctioned racing. I knew he'd had some cool cars in the past, but didn't know he'd raced here. He also showed me some photos of other cars he'd had, including an early 70's Formula 400 Firebird.

Re: Old photos

Pete , I have a 69 Beaumont 2 Dr Post car that I am gonna make a tribute of this car.its not the darker Verdoro green that I think Conroy used in 69 v but Rally Green. I've just had most of the Logo's cut at a vinyl sign shop and hope to have them installed next week. From everything I have found out, it was one of three 1969 Conroy Cheetah cars built , that apparently we're all only 350 ci cars??? Would love more info if anybody had any, especially you BC race guys! My car currently has the 350 in it, but man oh man am I dying to, and may do it anyway,....... of dropping a 427 in it or maybe an L78 into it.
Car is in great shape, has a beautiful original stock green interior ,
The other thing I need to do is install a 68 grill or paint the front grill black like the 1968 Beaumonts had as shown in this picture. I believe they did just use a 68 grill and it also looks like the same Beaumont Script as the 68 vs the 69's
I don't have the small 350 V8 symbol for the lower qtrs or what appears to be the Chrome trim on the lower portion of the car,but other than that , I feel it's gonna be a pretty nice representation of what Conroy was doing "back in the day"...
Anyhow it's been a fun project over the summer,...and if anybody has any info whatsoever on this photo that Pete posted,...please give me a call or drop me an email

What is the story on this car?
I have some info on a Quebec COPO, which I was interested in years ago.
If I believe that this is the same car, I am willing to share details via PM.
