Re: Aircraft pics
Flying on a "wing and a prayer", and for the Israeli pilots, their prayers are a local call.

Re: Aircraft pics
Back in '79-'80 my younger brother was the crew chief for the first F-16 officially put into service for the Air Force up at Hill AFB in Ogden Utah. His planes tail number was 001 for all us number freaks, they referred to it as balls one! I got to ride out to the plane with the pilots and crew in the van to the flight line, cool stuff. The first Israeli pilot to train and fly the B model (two seater) was Ilan Ramon. I just remember thinking this guy is the same age as me at the time, 22 and he was flying F-16's. Wow! Bad Ass. And my 20 year old brother was in charge of the plane. Amazing! http://www.space.com/missionlaunches...el_030201.html |
Re: Aircraft pics
Last year, the International Space Station was orbiting over the east coast when the shuttle was launched.
They were in the right position to capture these amazing photos: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...d_image001.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...d_image002.jpg What I wouldn't give to be there! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |
Re: Aircraft pics
NEAT photos but it looks like they were shot from within our atmosphere and not above it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Still very cool shots.

Re: Aircraft pics
maybe shot from 30-35000 feet ? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Aircraft pics
Shot from space. No conventional jet can climb to an altitude where the sky turns black and you can see the curvature of the earth. It's just the oblique angle of the space station as it flew from the northwest to the southeast as it passed bye. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: Aircraft pics
wow. looks so close, the intra coastal looks the same flying over in a commercial jet !! but thats true, I never saw the curvature of the earth in a 707 !

Re: Aircraft pics
Andy,
In no way was I trying to start a debate I was just commenting that the photo looks like it was taken from a much lower altitude. Both the SR-71, U-2 and WB-57 all are capable of flying at 100,000+ feet and at least two can fly to the upper fringes of our atmosphere where it is nearly dark. I have seen both photos and documentary's on both aircraft and I will be damned if I can find just ONE photo on the net taken from either aircraft. I did however find this link Space shuttle photo myth I promise they can take photos that appear much higher than what these photos appear to be taken from. Very neat pictures none the less. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Rick |
Re: Aircraft pics
Rick, it's all good. I said no coventional airplane, but the spyplanes and research craft are far from that.
If you like to spend some days looking at really cool pics, try this: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/ I have been an airplane nut since I was just a little kid. Anything with wings is cool for me. |

still cleaning the office out of 20+ years of boxed photos.
I think I am through most of the cars, so here are the ships and planes !! http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/scan0025.jpg The USS Independence (CV62) two F14's to the left and probably a CH46 helicopter and a fixed wing P3 to the right. close-up of the 2 F14's below http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/scan0024.jpg I was assigned to intel photography in the Med prior to the Beirut, Lebanon cease-fire being broken in Feb 84, this was shot with a manual Canon F1 and 1000 spd film after sunset from a moving ship. |
Re: Aircraft pics
Chris,
I see single tails on these planes. F-14's or possibly A-6 Intruders? Steve |
Re: Aircraft pics
Jet on the left, climbing, is an A-6 Intruder or its larger brother, an EA-6 Prowler. Jet on the right, low, looks like an S-3 Viking anti-sub jet.

Re: Aircraft pics
Chris,
Do you know the purpose for this demonstration? Just Ford haters, or something more to it? I can't imaging the USN taking a car on a carrier for this purpose unless it was for a photo op or something. Steve |
Re: Aircraft pics
Steve, Ive seen this photo several times over the years with different phrases attached. I am searching the web now for the real story. I believe it may have been a burial at sea, some Sailor who went down in his car in ashes maybe.
I'll find out. That is the USS Enterprise. |

I can't imaging the USN taking a car on a carrier for this purpose unless it was for a photo op or something. Steve [/ QUOTE ] I told you I would find the truth, here are three cloudy memories and photo evidence !! I was there for that launch. From my vantage point on the front of the waist cat, I took a full series of photos, from preparation, to traveling down the catapult, to the short air flight and water impact. It was a Ford Falcon that the Enterprise Weapons Department used to drive around Olongapo. In 1978 as the ship was leaving the PI to return to the States for an extended overhaul. The vehicle was no longer needed and was given a "burial at sea". Posted by Rick in MI This photo is not from a TV show. It's not doctored. It really happened. It's not a "test". The US Navy may not do this any more, but they certainly did it that day! I was stationed on the ship, and I was there on the flight deck. I took photos. The ship was the USS Enterprise, and we were leaving Subic Bay for the last time before an extended yard period. It was in late 1978. It was a Dodge. Posted by I was there in West Michigan' "I was on the Cat crew that shot it. It was a '67 Plymouth Valiant. This picture is taken from the cruise book for the Enterprise WETPAC '78 cruise. I'm in a second picture in the book. The stories above are correct. It was the parts car for Heavy - 1, the Vigilante squadran. And they were being decomisioned upon return to CONUS. It was a POS so none of the other squadrans would buy it. This idea was thought up where all good ideas are thought up - in the Subic Bay O club. When this pic came out with the terrorist quote, I was able to hook up on line with the then LTJG who thought it up and sold it to the Big E skipper, after everone else in the chain of comand said no. The Skipper said do it! What Balls. Posted by Curt in Florida "In spite of all the "I was there" info on the type of car, none of the above is totallt correct. It was a 1963 Plymouth Savoy, as identifiable from this pic: http://members.cox.net/dragnd/plymouth01.jpg |

[/ QUOTE ] Chance-Vought A-7 Corsair II's, to be exact! ("Corsair II" since the first Corsair was the F4U WWII-era bird. Actually, there was a Vought Corsair biplane in the '30s but we'll leave that for another time!) Since he's shooting aircraft carriers they're probably Navy birds but the USAF used A-7s as well. I got my "good eye" watching planes as a kid and it came in handy later on when I was a KC-135 tanker pilot and had to spot those dudes way out as they approached for a refill. (I wasn't a C-student for no reason! Had my nose buried in airplane books and car magazines.) |

Re: Aircraft pics
FF tail code indicates the 1st FW at Langley AFB, VA. He's a long way from home. Probably on a dog-and-pony show tour with the new jet. Looks like the Wing Commander's plane with the "1st FW" code on the tail.
