Wow..you're just moving right along!

markinnaples 01-07-2019 01:51 PM

Sheesh Dave, I have to make sure my wife doesn't see this thread as you're making the rest of us look like we move in reverse. Looks great.

Billohio 01-07-2019 01:55 PM

I have a feeling Daves wife is doing all that work while hes gone

JBALL 01-07-2019 07:25 PM

Looks great.. I will say that is the cleanest job site I have ever seen! Keep up the good work!

Vintage car guy should have vintage "Hay fork" for the lifting devise to the loft. Really enjoy the thread for the property build.

You guys are too kind! I'm glad you all are enjoying my thread, and I expect you all to attend my funeral when this is done since I'll be dead from exhaustion!:thumbsdown::haha:

Funny you say that, Kevin, since I've been looking at those and also getting something like this for the trolley. I think both of these things together, along with the winch, may exceed the weight capacity of the loft! This part will also pay homage to my Ohio clan!:worship:

More progress this week, and fear not! The BMW 507 thread and Crusty Cuda thread have parts purchases to update once they get here.:3gears:

Cheers... and thanks! :beers:

quik9r 01-08-2019 12:03 PM

The hay fork in picture is from my clan and was in the family barn from around 1900 in Primrose, Ontario.

A12pilot 01-08-2019 12:50 PM

Oh, wow! That's pretty cool, Kevin. Is it now retired and living a comfortable life as a show piece or is it still slingin' hay? We were thinking of using a big hay hook that grasps the twine together and holds it in the center of the bale prior to lifting, but still undecided right now.

Cheers:beers:
Dave

quik9r 01-08-2019 02:52 PM

fork long retired, was for the lose hay days I was "next generation" of hay fork that moved the hay bale from wagon to elevator to hay mow in the barn.

The only weak link in your idea would be the strength and reliability of the twine.

A12pilot 01-12-2019 12:31 PM

5 Attachment(s)
Yes, I thought that too but seems the hay place is using plutonium core twine in these darn bails!:eek2: I'll see how it goes sends if things don't work out I'll search out some hay tongs.:scholar:

Moving forward, know what this first picture is? Well, what some people see here is a pile of assorted lumber. What you really see is a sprained hamstring, pulled deltoid, and lower....oh, and upper..... back pain for years to come! :confused2: Not leaving well enough alone, I decided a second loft was in order with an associated gangway with hay hatch. This new area will handle all the bags of shavings for the stalls and a bistro set for beers and wines and happy hour!:tongue: I mean, what else are hay lofts for besides bistro sets??

Moving into the tack room, I installed the cabinets and sink to make sure I have things right before drywall mud, texture, and paint work. Once that's done, I'll file the floor and then reinstall. Today I'll hang the wall cabinets as well.

So here's the second loft and today I'll finish up the floors and install the jail bar rails. Up next is Fencing: So long back.... again. And Stalls: Why didn't I pay someone to do all of this?!:confused2:

Cheers:beers:
Dave

Alrighty, progress! The second hay loft is in with railings, cabinets are hung in the tack room, and stall kick panels are coming along! The hay hatch came out exactly as expected, particularly after the third try:shocked: Who would have thought hinges need to be square to the hinged part??:dunno:

Once all the stalls are lined with wood, they'll be waterproofed and the gaps in the corners fitted with molding to seal the edges. This ensures pee stays in the stall! :smirk: Amazing what you learn about horses when you build a stall. I thought they just went up and down and around in circles for .25 cents! :dunno:

So that does one do after a hard day at work in the barn for a reward? Why, build a sundae that rivals Friendly's, Braum's, or any Jersey Shore bike-up local ice cream stand!! Hmmm....I sort of have that Rat Fink look going on there. Man I need a haircut!

Cheers:beers:

Dave,

Looking great....Rat Fink :)
You deserve that Sundae Treat.

Billohio 01-13-2019 01:17 PM

Braums ice cream. Friend of mine and I made a trip to Texas years ago. He told me how good it was so we brought some back to ohio in coolers good stuff.

So your do-it-yourself barn kit even comes with a factory supplied pair of barn cats? Wow, they sure think of everything these days.

m22mike 01-13-2019 07:01 PM

That horsey barn is nuts :eek2: can't imagine the house and the most important part .......THE SHOP.......
Carry on while I suffer out here in Scottsdale with the other Ohio bums
Mike

Billohio 01-13-2019 08:20 PM

I noticed the cats too. I think they want out to explore!

Woj 01-14-2019 12:02 AM

Sox should be out on varmint patrol instead of in the cage? So, I guess that cat stays?
I hope your cats keep your property and more importantly your garages rodent free.

You are making impressive progress. I like the hay hatch door idea. I've got the pull down ladder to my garage loft and never liked the hole in the floor, especially after getting a good dose of paint fumes while painting upstairs. Always afraid to fall into the opening. A hatch like this would work perfect to block to ladder opening.

Looking good Dave!!

Phil

Charley Lillard 01-14-2019 01:49 AM

Wait till the horses destroy everything.

A12pilot 01-14-2019 11:40 AM

Yes, Sox should be out prowling the grounds, but he’s only allowed out for a little bit here and there due to a broken pelvis which he had when we found him. He’s getting better, and is good at chasing things, but needs to rest for a few more weeks until he can live up to his full “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Sox” potential:biggthumpup: The other kennel is vacant, for now...:rolleyes2:

Big order of the final wood planking is today! :cool2: Time to wrap this barn up! Yeah, right.....:rolleyes2:

Yep, Charley, you’re 100% right. Funny, I flew with a guy that was showing me this beautiful barn he built his wife. Looked spotless. He commented, “These pics are from last week but the barn is 12 years old.” Shocked, I asked why was it so clean? He said his wife won’t let the horses in there since she doesn’t want it dirty!!!:thumbsdown:

One thing Kelly is pretty fanatical about is keeping this barn clean, despite my intent on making complete messes in here anytime I set foot inside. Even the mud gets cleaned! :worship:

Cheers:beers:

Moving forward, you can see my enthusiasm as the final load of wood. I was able to finish the frame out (with the cat's supervision:eek2:) and start planking everything. Once this gets done the final cedar trim will go in to cover seams and gaps, then the black wrought iron hardware will go in!

The end is nigh!" Or... something like that:rolleyes2: Then I get to start on the shops!a:biggthumpup:

Cheers

Phenomenal work so far. That attachment would be great but not around middle TN. Limestone everywhere you turn.

southernfriedcj 01-22-2019 12:09 PM

That barn is looking good. Tongue and groove pine bead board costs a fortune around here.

It would also run about $3.00 per square foot labor for install labor on walls.

A buddy of mine just called me Friday wanting 3,000 square feet put on the high ceilings of his house. I wished him luck finding someone to do it.

Wow, really? Based on inconsistent thickness, straightness of the boards equivalent to the Baltic Sea, and ease of handling a 12ft board with the firmness of paper, I can't imagine why he can't find anyone! :frown::dunno::thumbsdown: Luckily, i'm stupid enough to tackle it myself! :eek2:

Moving ahead, I've got about half the barn sheathed (Is that the right word? :hmmm: Or is it shorned? Or is that only related to sheep??? I haven't been right after that board hit me in the head! ) in the planking, and up on the scaffolding I go! The gameplan here is to do all the walls and then work on the ceiling. Alternate stain color on the stalls, walls and ceiling, and cedar beams will compliment each other for that "holy crap, why would anyone do this to barn that will be destroyed with horses? " look!:frown:

Every 10ft on the walls where the boards butt up against each other there's a seam which will be covered by a 2x8 piece of cedar to give the illusion when you walk in that the whole interior of the barn is constructed of wood. That will go across the ceiling too where the ceiling fans are mounted. Should hopefully all tie in nicely!

Thanks for the compliments guys! And Billohio, thanks for keeping me in mind at the recent farm market you went to!

More to come next week! :burnout:

Cheers:beers:

No insulation? or not needed in Texas..

A12pilot 01-23-2019 11:50 PM

I insulated the entire roof with 2" closed cell foam as well as the tack room exterior wall. The three other walls will get the pink stuff as will the vaulted ceiling. That will be heated and ACed. All the pipes are wrapped, so no issues there. The air gap between the outside wall and inside wood planking will be plenty for the horses.

Cheers

Where are we at now? Let's see.... pinched nerve in the right shoulder causing the hand to go numb at night? Check:biggthumpup: Strange clicking in my neck? Check:biggthumpup: Bruised spleen somehow? Oh yeah, that's a check-a-rooni!

But, I'm just about done with this tongue and groove board installation! What makes me work so fast? The last minute of The Who's Baba O'Reilly repeated over and over:cool2: But seriously, just the ceiling left and then out comes the impending "spray of shellack" disaster!

More to come...

That last photo shows the final trim installed on the front corners. Everywhere the boards meet will be covered by a 1x8 cedar board, and all remaining metal beams will be covered in cedar. The illusion when you walk in will be that this is a wood barn. No metal visible.

What you see here is the last run of fence installed with my mighty 1989 Dodge D150 Ram in the distance. And lastly, Scarlett saying, "Dude, less piccy, more worky. It's cold as snot out here and I needs a barn to mess up, photo-boy!":rolleyes2:

Arena.... coming in hot!!

We had a nice barn once....Then we put horses in it.......

Billohio 01-29-2019 11:14 PM

I had a few Clydesdales with a friend of mine then I wised up. They would about eat a 6x6.

big gear head 01-29-2019 11:36 PM

I think you have a wood barn with a metal shell.

m22mike 01-30-2019 12:26 AM

Dave
Howz the house coming along ?
Mike

A12pilot 01-30-2019 01:04 AM

Well, anything built and eaten can be rebuilt! But the cribbing caps on the stall edges should help. I guess time will tell.

House is about to be drywalled, Mike! Just a few more months! Going to start on the shops in March ...and they won't take nearly as long. Cannot wait to dive into the cars again. I'm itching to weld/paint/fabricate again!

Cheers
Dave

Xplantdad 01-30-2019 07:46 PM

Wow...you are moving right along!! :)

southernfriedcj 01-30-2019 09:14 PM

Man that is fast for 1 guy. Looks good.

Are you going to do any fire sprinklers in the barn?

Just curious(former firefighter). I had a friend lose 18 horses in a barn fire and two years later another barn fire hit a Clydesdale barn a mile away and they were able to save the horses.
