Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

And here we are with the factory overspray look! I am using base/clear on the car, and that won't really look right when you try an overspray look. So I mixed a 50/50 ratio of base/clear and hardened to the clear specs for this. This resulted in a lower sheen, which is exactly the look I wanted. I also moved down the pans a little more on the inside since the HVLP guns of today don't really put out the volume and pressure that the guns of the past did. From survivor cars I've seen, the pattern goes a little further in that the HVLP gun would do. So I feathered the spray in further on the pans. I think I got close to it looking correct!!! Wheel wells on the Mopars really seemed to get a lot of paint. This area and the front inner fenders get good coverage. I also did thew lower front frame rails as well. I'll massk those off when I shoot the engine bay tonight with the proper base and clear. More to come!!!! It's getting there!!!!

I know a guy who used to do paint and body work. No matter what color he was going to paint a car, he'd always paint it black first to find any imperfections. Then off came the black and the car was resprayed. Seems crazy until you see his work.

Good progress Dave.

Keep it going.

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Thanks, guys!!!! The last few days have been exhausting! I did notice that the stocks in my 401K that relate to masking tape and masking plastic have soard due to my buying spree these past few days. I know....I can't believe I have those in my portfolio too . I try to invest seasonally, too. I buy pumpkins in August and sell in October. It's a win-win all around. Where was I? Oh yeah, speaking of pumpkins.....here's my Great One!!!! First step was to mask off the exterior and undercarriage in preps for spraying the interior, engine bay, and trunk.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn1917.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscn1925.jpg

To add some autheticity to the paint job, I hung the fender tag from the steering column support and dusted it with the base coat only. All A12 cars were built at the Lynch Road plant and this, unlike at the other plants, was how the tag was painted. As an example, a St. Louis car would have the tag screwed into the inner fender with on edge bent up. Paint was applied to the tag and then it was bent back and fastened with the other screw. As a result, the tag has a bend on one edge, one screw is painted and the other unpainted. Lynch Road cars had the tag hung inside the car so some got paint, some got a dusting, depending on the painter that day. As a rule, they are all unbent and the screws are both natural. Now with the trunk, interior and engine bay out of the way, the next day I came in and spent a good 8hrs masking everything off. I masked the engine bay where the inner fender meets up with the outer fender so there is no visible line anywhere. The mask line on the firewall is under the drip rail as you can see above. After all that was done, out comes the base and I was just waiting for the next thing to go wrong!!!!

Looks beautiful.

BTW, the left screw should be painted orange and the right screw would be natural on your car. See the slight bend in the left upper corner of the tag? That is there because the tags were installed by one screw prior to paint and bent up slightly in case one of the line inspectors decided to put an inspection mark into the tag. After the car got further down the line, the other screw was installed later.

Ahhh, very interesting. Learn something new everyday. I'll have to go back and look at my old photos of my Hemi orange, Lynch Road '71 Hemi Charger sunroof car (the one Tim Welborn has now). it was original paint when I got it. Funny thing about that car is that there was little to no Hemi orange paint in the engine compartment. It was as if the painter made one half-hearted pass with the paint gun while standing in front and never got the firewall or the inner fenders below the top portions.

A12pilot 10-28-2016 12:20 PM

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Steve,

Yeah, that's the reason that the bottoms of the frame rails, inner trunk lid supports, under the package tray, were all just usually dip gray primer. The painter had a job to do and if he couldn't reach it, oh well. Under side of the battery tray is another common non-painted area.

No worries the critique with the fender tag. I'm the KING of learning something new everyday!!! Kelly tells me that often!

Another thing about LR cars is the dimples in the firewall. There are either one, two, a dimple and a chisel mark, two chisel marks, on one side or both. It varies by car, they aren't uniform or consistent, and are only on Lynch Road cars. I never heard of that and there is a 9 page thread on the A12 board about just that! Interesting, trivial, and just when you think you heard it all something like this comes up and it makes you scratch your head

At what point did you shoot the door jams ... TAZ

A12pilot 10-28-2016 10:10 PM

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

I shot the jambs, inner doors, trunk gutters, and underside of the decklid all at the same time so as not to have any overspray or masking lines. The trunk lid I kept closed with a wire that went from the latch to the striker latch on the underside of the lid. On mopars, that latch plate is painted body color. The latch mechanism isn't painted but the bolts are since there was a mechanism installed to keep the trunk closed when the outside was painted. Aso a result, the truck latch striker gets painted on the deck lid, and the latch should be plated correctly [no paint] but the bolts that hold it on are painted body color since those bolts were holding the temporary latch in place during the paint process hope that helps!

Thanks Dave -- I think I will follow your lead on this ... the only part I will deviate on is the underside of the hood and deck lid will be painted semi-gloss black (just to be different) as the Nova will be painted code 52 Yellow. Thanks again for the vector ... TAZ

I added the radiator and headlight bucket blackout. This was done kind of crappily [is that two "p"s or one? ] as was done by the factory, and the coverage was not the best either. Some overspray got on the underside of the core support and inner fender as well. I painted the interior doors with single stage black too. Getting ready to start the cut and polish!

After masking off the doors and painting the upper and lower parts with the single stage black, I added factory number markings that were on the doors when I disassembled them. Also, the front and rear window channels had a yellow tick mark by each reveal molding clip. I assume this was so that after the vinyl top was installed they knew where the screw hole was. Always good to find the right hole!

Thanks guys! I'm trying to hold up the standards that this forum is used to seeing. So, my heater core came back from Bob at Glen Ray radiators, and I installed that into the heater box and added the factory stamping on the front.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn1988.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-dscn1987.jpg

The heater box is now ready for installation. I also started in on blasting some small parts and wanted to get jack detailed up. I noticed after blasting, certain areas had heavy runs. This tells me how the part was painted and I'll hang it when I paint it to replicate those runs! I know!!!! This worthless info is so much fun you can't stand it!!!!

I latched the doors, so now the wetsanding and polishing can begin. I had to rearrange the shop a bit, and it's getting close to engine install day!!! Of course, I have to follow my checklist. Pretty easy steps restoring a car. Not really sure why everyone makes a big deal out of this!!!

All the new parts are showing up and I figured I'd better get to wetsanding and polishing before I have a car done and then realize I never did the cut and buff! I did get a few bugs in the top coat, and of course the worse one is staring you right in the face. So I'm going to have to get the dental pick out to remove said bug and then add a few drops of clear on top. Hopefully after the sanding the worst one will be unseen. I'm going for the factory look so I want just a tad bit of peel, but not too much. Fortunately, I'm lazy, so doing it sub-par is right up my alley!

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...103_134856.jpg

I'm starting with 1500, 1000 in some places where there is excessive peel, and then I'll work my way up to 10,000 grit.

Looks great Dave. There are a lot of parts on GM cars that were dipped and I try to replicate the same by dipping them in a pale of semi gloss black lacquer. They have changed the formula over the years so it does not react like it used to but still looks better than spraying and you also get the solids and solvents to separate around holes and similar areas giving it an opaque run so to speak. Looks perfect for us anal retentive guys.
