Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Took the day off to check out Super Chevy/Maple Grove.
This is some of this weeks progress I blasted the steering wheel with glass beads, to scuff it enough for the paint to stick. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psae716207.jpg Painted wheel/came out great! http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa7b42827.jpg I decided to put the hood grills on the car, much like a 69 Copo Chevelle would have. Lots of careful measuring and remeasuring and more remeasuring, then I got the drill out and did it!!! Thats it for any exterior mods. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc5c3aa20.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps00c3bc19.jpg I stripped the bottom of the hood, then etch primed and top coated it with satin black. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd932d570.jpg Got the drive shaft stripped, painted. Then new u-joints and stripes, and installed in the car. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps6e57dbcf.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps2133e735.jpg I also got the wheel wells blasted. After a bit of pitting repair from battery acid over the years, they will be primed and painted, hopefully this week. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps23607dfd.jpg |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Looking great! Did you add the brackets at the rear of the hood to hold the inserts?
Looks like that wheel came out very nice!! BIG |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
I'm jealous! Nice ride!!!

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
The progress continues, although it took a detour this week. I wasn't planning on doing any body/paint work, but I had a little mishap, and dinged the hood. Not a problem really. I got some of the base coat with the car, and it's Sherwin Williams, the brand I always use. Dents fixed, and will be painted when I can get some booth time. The hood is scuffed. It just needs some color on a couple spots, then a couple coats of clear......Then sanding and buffing. So far it looks good.
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps30939242.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps235d2070.jpg I got the radiator support and inner fenders done. Had to do some pitting repair, but nothing too terrible. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa004a88d.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psf286948a.jpg I also got the whole smog system on the engine. All went well, except the the JUNK repro pump bracket. Luckily Albert's parts supply had a real one in stock. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psac7ea481.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa09a8ffe.jpg I also got the driveshaft installed. That took about 5 mins. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0715d431.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd5b19d2d.jpg Then I decided to blast the battery tray. Not sure what paint was on it, but the blast cabinet didn't even scratch it. So I broke out the paint remover. I think it was painted with the same paint they use on the bottom of the space shuttle. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc8fa73f9.jpg I have some custom wire harnesses being made by American Autowire. They are great to work with, even if you're a pain in the a$$ like me, and want special wiring done. Donny is making me a harness that has all the plugs for the Shiftworks in dash tach. Gonna take a break and head out to the Ohio Chevelle show. Lots to do when I get back. |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
maybe you know this but you are missing the u-bolt at the rear of the shifter bracket on the tail housing.
|
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Bill,
Looking Fabulous, see you on Thursday....drive safe! Dan |

It's not missing Paul, it was eliminated. The tail housing on the Autogear M22's is a larger diameter than a stock Muncie, so the u-bolt doesn't work/ too small. The mounting plate has been drilled for the Autogear trans. So it has regular 3/8" bolts holding the mounting plate, much like a Chevelle set-up. The round part of the plate had to be re-ground to fit up against the larger diameter housing too........good eye though!! I got good advise from Ed Hartnett in Phily/the Muncie guru. Yes Dan, we'll see you Thurs......looking forward to this one......big time!! |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
ok great. i built a hotrod from a 18k mile '68 granny nova years ago. LS6 w/077 heads, 4 spd. lotsa fun.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Bill,
Great seeing you at NOCC.....I bet your itching to jump back on the Nova. Dan |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
It was good to see you Dan, as well as the the other Chicago guys. It didn't take long to dive back into the Nova project. I had several boxes of small parts waiting for me when we got home. I also spent some time repainting the hood today. I ran into a snag, so I will hopefully finish up the repaint tomorrow. I also picked up the SMS vinyl roof at the Ohio show, so thats another project to do.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
I haven't posted progress pics in a few weeks. Been busy though. I also had a few car shows to get thru.
I put a ding in the hood, so I had a little fixit job to do. Dent fixed, color on the repair, cleared the whole hood, color sanded and buffed. No sign of the dent, and the moldings are back on the hood. Thanks Albert for the spray booth time. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps73928cc1.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps8a9fabec.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps9ea2954f.jpg I decided to replace the vinyl top. Picked up an SMS top, removed the old vinyl, cleaned all the glue off, installed the new roof. I also buffed all the moldings before putting them all back. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps80d4acb1.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psae3bad69.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps931c2c99.jpg Done with the roof/moldings!! Took 3 days!! http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscacd45e6.jpg I got all the wire harnesses from American Autowire, and installed them. Also got the rad support radiator, shroud, etc installed. (Thanks Mike for the help with the placement of the radiator) Mike drew out all the dimensions for drilling the mounting holes. It came out great!! http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psed67b720.jpg Picked up a new grill. I didn't like how it was painted, so I repainted it. Done/ready to install. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse5668f53.jpg I also got the inner fenders done. Had them blasted, I repainted them, and put all new rubber on them. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps161fa908.jpg |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Bill,
Looks Great! There is no way my wife let`s me place any car parts in the house.....When I was single, my entire living room floor was filled with restored Chevelle parts It was the best furniture Dan |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
She should be happy I got the fenders out of there!! There's a plan in the works for a new building out back, just to store cars, and all the crap associated with them. That probably won't happen until the Nova is done/hopefully sometime before it gets too cold. I'll have to switch from car mode, to building mode somehow.
|
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Well Bill, you've only got 3 months before winter and you still haven't got permits for your out-building!
|
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Jim,
Bill works VERY Fast....plus he has Jersey connections Dan |

SW tach's sending units NOS parts. lol |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Realistically, I probably won't get to it until early spring. There's no huge hurry. Lots to do on the Nova, and I have to move the single car garage that's there now.

Bill,
Who ever owns your former '71 SS Chevelle is one lucky guy. Dan |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Bill,
No update since 8/26? You should be finished by now Dan |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Yea Dan, I'd like to see the 71 Chevelle back in my possession. That's a nice Chevelle, and someone offered me a boat load of cash for it........and I caved!!!
Been pretty on the busy on the Nova..... I got the seat belts out and dismantled them, cleaned um up, and reassembled/screwed them down. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psdcbf83e9.jpg I also got the front bumper, parking lights, brackets, ready to go back on the car. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps136a5c70.jpg I spent a lot of time getting the carpet down. The crappy repro carpets are a ball buster, but with a couple cans of spray glue, a heat gun and a lot of 4 letter words, it came out ok. Also got the back seat in. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps15f9a779.jpg Then there's the dash, steering column, radio, glove comp, and all the wireing to make it all work.....hopefully!! http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps32f0fecc.jpg I also got the rear bumper, brackets lights, license plate/fuel door etc done. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps92eb2782.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps336a8777.jpg The last 2 projects are to get the nose back on the car, after repainting the insides black. Then the exhaust system, which is ordered and should be here in 3 weeks. Then the most nerve racking part, firing up the new motor. |
Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Geese Bill, I thought Tommy did all this work for the next owner so he did not have to do it. HUMMMMM?

Tom did more of a cosmetic restoration. He had the car painted and cleaned up under the hood. I decided to completely change the drivetrain, add disc brakes, etc. I also wanted all the undercoating gone, which meant it had to go on the rotisserie. I bought the Nova for a project, as a low milage survivor that already had all the body and paint work done. I also replaced items that a normal person would have left, like the roof, bumpers, carpet, etc........ Working on these cars is not work. I'm not real good at sitting around, so it's good to have a project like this to keep busy. I spent 3 hrs last night trying to figure out why the brake lights wouldn't work, after installing all new wire harnesses. The brake like switch had power, and worked, the bulbs were new, etc.....turned out to be the cheap chinese turn signal switch. Next project, getting the nose out, and back on the car. |

I like the car and it is very cool.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Nova looks good, but that '68 Chevelle makes me drool.

Re: Project: Hot rodding a 69 Nova
Made some more progress over the last couple weeks. Finished up the interior, put an oil and water temp gauge in, for the upcoming fire the new motor party!!
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps74598948.jpg I got the fenders out. They needed some work. I repainted all the areas where the bolts had scratched the paint. Then sanded and buffed out the paint on both fenders. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pscbecad51.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps70493a4a.jpg I installed the wheel wells, before the fenders. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psecd4bd90.jpg Installing the fenders. I put an old sheet down to prevent scratching. Then when the fender is in place, I remove it. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse50c9f24.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps1040f245.jpg I took a ride to upstate NY to pick up the exhaust today. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psea5b59ba.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0ecab94a.jpg Here's a couple shots of the car as it is now. http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa0ed0a63.jpg http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/e...psa3df9e9d.jpg Next, I will get the exhaust installed, then the hood, and front bumper, headlight bezels, which I'm painting. I also will be sanding and buffing the doors and quarters, like I did with the fenders. Then it's time to fire the motor. If that goes well, the Nova's a finished project. |
