Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
I never did it either Mike on the brake drums or undercarriage BUT may look cool now with my car being Fathom green and checking out some old magazines. Can always repaint the drums easy enough. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
I remember when I was a kid talking to a construction worker in my neighborhood who drove in each morning in a GTO. He had painted his Drums red to match his car. He had a torque thrust style wheel and the drums were very visible. I have never seen white though. I remember the guy looked a lot like Steven Tyler from Aerosmith.... The GTO also has glasspacks and shackles and several things hanging from the rear view mirror.. Maybe a squirrel tail or red tail hawk feathers...

Any of you old Day-2 guys ever paint your brake drums white back in the old days? I was toying with that idea. Opinions? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif [/ QUOTE ]I have a copper 71 Z that the rear wheel wells & brake drums are white, kinda looks cool & i haven't changed it & my lime green 71 Z that's posted in this thread with big aluminum slots & L88 hood has it's gas tank painted white & from behind it looks cool & i haven't touched it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
I remember the lowriders painting brake drums white. Richmond/East Bay area, California, 1970s. Usually five-spoke Rocket deep-dish mags with small WWs.

Sammy... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Some things were done ,"Back in the day" that I never thought were cool, painting anything white on the undercarriage might be one of them https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif [/ QUOTE ] The fenderwells and front frame stub on my COPO Chevelle were painted white by the original owner. Might have looked cool with the tube-around-the-framerail Super Comp headers. |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
White undercarriage is a good thing (it preserves a non undercoated car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif)

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Jenkins painted all his gas tanks white to reflect the heat.
|
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Some racers did it to see if they had a fluid leakage. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
|
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Fuel leakage, heat reflection... whatever... they did it 'cause everyone else did. White gas tank and rear end. In 1978 I shocked everyone with gloss black paint on my 12 bolt, drum to drum. Left the gas tank unpainted. That was the end of the white undercarriage in this area. Dog? what say you?

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
You can see the white wheel wells on my pop's car here, which I think was abut 1970.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Never did the white thing, but I had the drums painted Lemans blue to match the color on my 57 Chevy. It looked pretty cool with the M/T chrome slots.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
According to the factory brochure for a 66 GTO the brake drums were painted red when Rally I's were ordered. So when mine is done it will have red drums.

Theese are 15x8 in the back with 15x7 in the front. I have no problem with tire clearance.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Here is my questions. When are 8" wheels justified?
I mean a 255/60/15 isn't really big enough, maybe a 275/60/15 would be. So an L60 would also justify an 8" wheel, but I don't think they are used nearly that often when people put 8" wheels on out back. Your car looks great John. What tires sizes are you running up front and back? The wider wheel dish is cool. |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
I have 245 60 15 on rear and 215 70 15 on the front before I put the cragars on I had 15x8 rallys on the rear and 15x7 rallys on the front with no wear problem on theese tires.

Here it is with the white wheel wells and Hooker Super-Comp Fender Well headers. Might be a slight case of the older you get the cheaper things were. This car had a 327, M21 4-speed and a 4.11 posi. Sold for much more than a grand in 1971! |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Nice view, nice car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Right across from 7/11. Just discovering them about 1970ish.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Sam, your Z looks great. What size wheels and tires you running?
|
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Looks like 15x8 wioth L60's out back, but it's the way the fronts round out the look to make it perfect!
I also would like to know what you're running up front. |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
NO vacuum advance needed for this distributor. All curve in by around 2,800 rpm's. Wheels are 15X6 and 15X7's. Vintage L60's in the rear. The Koni shocks are a better choice for drag racing with the adjustment but pale badly in comparison to the Dennis Cumby "Mr. Gasket" shocks I installed. Making those Thrush mufflers into header mufflers and they will probably go on the car also. The car also has an old Hurst CP shifter with a vintage white T-handle. Check out the license plate frame I acquired by twisting GTO DON's arm. Some vintage decals for the 1/4 windows to follow. Have to thank M22Mike again for his posting skills cause mine are non-existent https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
