1963 Rangoon Red/White Interior Ford Galaxie XL 500 R Code 427 Convertible.
My dad bought this car new for my mother in 1963. I "claimed" the car when I started driving in December 1974. I drove the car through high school and college. I sold the car in 1981 after college graduation to a collector for $10K. I "though" I killed him! |

Well I finally got around to working on the orange Z I purchased back in 2010. The engine and trans were last removed when I rebuilt them in 1978. I wish I had pictures of that but unfortunately do not. In 1980 I had Radar @ K&G Speed and Machine (Philly/Havertown,Pa) do my machine work. He was really on top of his game. Fast forward to Oct 2012 I removed the engine and trans for a refreshening. I dropped the engine off at a local engine builder and I told him make sure you don't deck the block. I said this to him a couple of times. The last time we spoke we discussed the cam selection and a couple of other things and I reminded him again not to deck the block and he started to chuckle; then he states you'll always know its yours because your name is stamped on the block under the timing cover. I guess Radar at K&G stamped it back in 80.
While waiting for the engine to be completed and dyno'ed, I've repainted the engine compartment, retaped the wiring harnesses, refinished any fasteners that had overspray/corrosion, replaced the carpet, repaired and installed the 8 track(I forgot the fidelity I was missing), installed all new rs actuator hoses and light switch, freshening up the trans with new bearings and syncro's and finished a hundred other things on the car that I've been meaning to fix. The aftermarket exhaust is on so when the engine is finished I should be up and running very quickly. The most rewarding thing is the satisfaction of working on the same car as I had done 30+ years ago as a youngster. |

Re: What was your 1st car?
1976 455 Trans Am purchased in 1988 - had a 350 L82 out of a Corvette in it. I later tracked down the numbers matching engine which got dropped in a Buick LeSabre. My family doctor ordered this car brand new in the fall of '75. Here I am at the same Army base runway dragstrip that Canuck referenced in his earlier post - Argentia, Newfoundland about '92.

Re: What was your 1st car?
Most have fond memory's of their first car....Not me. The first car I ever had registered was this R-code 64 Ford Galaxie. Mostly all stock drivetrain-wise, 427,4 speed. What I really wanted was 66 Nova SS (or at least ANY Chevy)not this Ford. But it was 300.00$ (in 77) so I bought it hoping I could get a Nova down the road. I hated this thing, too big, and seemed slow (nobody would help me with it either). Ended blowing it up all over the highway two months later.....

Not a very good picture, but this is 1977 at the house I lived in at University of Wisconsin. Note the sign hanging from the front porch "Try our Waterbed", we borrowed the sign from a hotel.

Re: What was your 1st car?
I still have my first car, a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Originally equipped with a 307/4BBL, THM200 trans, and a 2.14 open ended 7.5" 10 bolt. I used it as a daily driver for 10 years logging over 100,000 miles on it in addition to the original 65,000 it had when I got it. It has been through quite a few changes over the years also. It is on it's 3rd engine, 7th transmission, 3rd rear. Currently it has a pretty healthy 1969 LT1 350 that I built with headers and a true dual exhaust system, a 2004R OD trans from a Monte Carlo, and a 3.73 8.5" posi from a wrecked 87 442. I also upgraded the rear suspension with Hotchkis pieces as well as added the much larger 442 sway bars. I removed ALL of the computer controlled when I installed the 350 in it. I repainted it in 2005 from the original white to a gray/silver combo as well as installed a pair of factory power bucket seats I found in a junkyard.
Here it is in 1998 after I changed the wheels... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ss/Cutlass.jpg and right after I painted it... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/P5111556.jpg I took it off the road 4.5 years ago when it would no longer pass NJ State inspection. Now that it is over 25 years old, I don't have to worry about that anymore. I need to drag it in the shop and do some work on it to make it road worthy again. I love this car and I really miss driving it. |

Re: What was your 1st car?
Here is my 71 Nova. I got it 2 weeks before my 16th birthday. It was a 29,000 1 owner car with a 307 and a Powerglide. This is October 1991.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1/dadnova1.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1/dadnova2.png And here it is again, 2 years later. This is the summer before my senior year in high school, July 1993. Other than the color changes and change to a black interior the car is still stock http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1/dadnova3.png Here it is mid 2000's. The 307 was replaced with a 406 and the Powerglide was swapped for a TH-350. The original 3.08 gears were replaced with 4:10's. The body, paint and interior are still holding up pretty good http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...yNovaLFlow.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ck71/89658.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...nskyNovaLR.jpg And here is where it still sits today. My first driver was a 1966 Chevelle Malibu 4 door sedan. I bought it out of the local paper for $300 in 2000. Stored indoors its whole life after getting hit on the right front in 1973. I fixed it but kept the fixed areas in grey primer. It had a 1969 250" six and a glide with 3.36 gears. Timing gears broke so I swapped in a 283. Also installed front WS6 sway bar and F40 rear sway bar and a power brake booster and some Rally wheels. Absolutely the most reliable car I have ever owned. Car is on the far right in the photo. Sold it my first year of college (2003) to a local guy and he still owns it.

My other "1st car" was my 1967 Chevelle that I still own today. Raced on and off its whole life. I got it with a 305 and a powerglide stuck in it but not hooked up. Bought in 1997 out of Chester Pa. I put a hot 350 in it with a 4 speed and 4.10 12 bolt. Went 13.0 @ 102 at Atco raceway in 2001. Was one of the fastest cars in high school at the time. Attached are a few photos of it racing in Philly back in the day.

Re: What was your 1st car?
My first car was a 1970 Chevelle Malibu 307, Gold with black stripes. I paid $100 for it and drove it home. That was 1990 so it was just and old rusty car. I drove it for about 6 month and rolled it over on a dirt road. Sold it for $150 and thought i got a good deal. The guy I sold it to took the motor and trans and put in his truck and sold the body to a junk yard.
Wish I could buy it back for $150. |

Yes - I'm afraid so. Not many places left where you can go and hold the part in your hand before you make the purchase. K |

LOL! - that's because it IS Atco! I traveled on the ciruit for about 15 years with the NMCA/NSCA. There were 8 to 10 races per year, all up and down the east part of the country. One of the stops was Atco. Typically we would start in Florida in Feb or March and work our way north as the weather got warmer. One or two events in Ohio and Michigan and then finish up in Columbus or Memphis (depending on the association) in October. K |

Re: What was your 1st car?

Seven years ago I posted the story of buying this car, selling it, and luckily getting it back. Well after many years of searching I was able to locate the person who sold me the car. I tried searching the Philadelphia Inquirer paper archives to no avail, although I found it originally in one, probably the evening Bulletin. Since I purchased it in New Jersey I decided to search the Camden area paper archives (inspired by PeteLeathersac/Andy)and located the original NJ ad. I knew the ad had to be very specific because I only wanted a hugger orange, black stripe RS/Z identical to the one I remembered Mark Donohue driving in my town as he did a power slide into the Sun Oil facility. To correct the record this was actually my second muscle car, but first Z28.
Once I found the ad which contained a tel# I googled the tel# and located the area of where I purchased the car. The area code was not in the ad but knew it was 609. I really had my doubts this would pan-out. What were the chances that the seller had the same tel# and still lived at the same address. I called and there was a recording of a young person. I thought I hit a dead end, except I remembered that several new area codes were added. I next called using 856 and left a message....and a minute later I received a call back and BINGO the caller Paul M. had owned the car. Well wasn't completely convince he owned the same car so I kind of interrogated him a bit, and he knew the car had fiber optics and a console 8track and other options. I mentioned I knew the dealer and town and he said he didn't think that was correct. He paused for a moment and said "I have the protect-o-plate for that car let me check and now my jaw dropped. After looking at POP, he said "you're are correct it came from Jay Chevrolet in Haddonfield, NJ. Paul actually went with Bill to order the car, and also picked it up with him. Paul is the second owner, and purchased it from his best friend Bill M. in 1971. Bill had to sell because he and his girlfriend were expecting a child. I will post more info later and pictures when he sends them to me. BTW since he had the POP/VIN he had searched for the car through the PA DMV, and did a VIN search about three months ago and knew the car was located in NY. Oh and one more thing, he sold the Z28 to buy a 67 big block corvette, and he still owns that car.... |
