Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
Anyone know what engine block he ran in 71? I read that most guys ran the iron block and some the alu CanAm block.

[ QUOTE ]
I know for sure Satmary ran NHRA, I used to see him at Englishtown. [/ QUOTE ] Joe also ran some AHRA tracks because we had him at White Hall a few times with a circuit of SS cars that ran out of the Chicago area. Also pretty sure he ran at the old E. St. Louis track when it was under the direction of Wayne Meinert. That was an AHRA sanctioned strip at the time. Might have run primarily NHRA for points but he definitely frequented AHRA tracks too. |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Most of the info. above is correct, however, I do not think Gibb/Hayter ran NHRA in the 71 season. I may be wrong, so don't quote me.
Hayter beat the 70 1/2 car of Satmary, WE-HAUL, even though Satmary got the hole shot. Gibb/Hayter won both the meet and the series, AHRA S/S World Champion on the final run, at Fremont. Hayter ran a 9.697 to Satmary's 9.762. Hayter won the series with 5500 points. |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #//Reason I asked
JoeC,
They ran a Diamond built iron block, with iron heads for the 1971 season. |

I posted this pic a while back in the vintage Camaro pics thread. My father took this pic at Union Grove, WI in July 1969. On the front fender of the car it says ZL-1. See Attachment

Frank I remember seeing that pic. zl-1 that's interesting
I love the old pictures. Kim |
Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Ken, talked to Helen Gibb today and she that they quit racing after that race so Hayter moved on. Also if the Winter Nats held in Jan. of 71 he would have not started driving for Fred until later or that article was written later both time lines would work

Re: Jim Hayter ZL1 Race car #
Going back to the third post with the picture of the car... Is that Fred Gibb- in the red shirt standing behind the car as it launches? That picture is also on a site with lots of old 70's race car photographs.
How common was it NOT to have a rear spoiler on the ZL1 cars when new? |
