I am not sure what qualifies a car as a survivor, it seems most folks have their own personal opinion, does one repaint to original colors remove it from survivor status, do wrong parts on the car remove it from being a survivor, are there any rules written on this.

Re: Any Unrestored Supercars left?

Mike,

The term "survivor" can cover a lot of ground. Mostly in the eye of the beholder I'd say. Many of my cars are survivors. However, some have had touch ups, but none have been blown apart and rebuild from the ground up. That is the starting point for me. Paint on these is usually not great if the cars had been driven or stored outside. I'd also say that a real survivor will have most, if not all, original components on the car.

The folks that do the Vintage Certification on survivor cars look at all aspects of the car. Paint, interior, drive train and all major components; giving a grade to each and every aspect of the car. In the end, the point total determines the current level (percentage) of originality. It is a sliding scale depending on each individual car. That of course depends on the historical use and care of the car.

I still have to tip my hat to Steve Shauger, Chris White and company in their efforts to Vintage Certify survivor cars. It actually gives an incentive to keep a car as original as possible. As the saying goes, they are only original once.

Not sure if this answers your question, but the Vintage Certification guys have done the most to quantify original cars outside of the Corvette world, which has done it for years.

Yes I agree ,Steve and his team are very good and dedicated , they put in a lot of overtime at MCACN to get the cars inspected on time.

Hi Mike,

It was great having your car participate in our Heritage Display at MCAC show this year.

In the Vintage Certification process our certification achievement awards are:

Vintage Time Capsule - Vehicles that are 95+% unrestored in all reference areas
Vintage Legend - Vehicles that are 85+% unrestored in all reference areas combined.
Vintage Heritage - Vehicles that are 85+% unrestored in four reference areas.
Vintage Legacy - Vehicles that are 85+% unrestored in three reference areas
Vintage Reference - Vehicles that are 85+% unrestored in at least one reference area.

The term Survivor is defined and trademarked by Bloomington Gold as the following.

As the name implies, Corvettes that have never been restored have ‘survived’
intentional or unintentional loss of original markings, paint or components.
Corvettes remaining over 50% unrestored or unmodifi ed may qualify for
this award if they remain in a condition that would serve well as an historic
guide for others who want to restore a Corvette of that vintage and type.
This award is designed to recognize those Corvettes that are “Worn in, but
not worn out.” A Survivor Corvette is signifi cantly unrestored, unrepaired,
or unmodifi ed and useful as a historic reference. It is a Corvette who in the
best interest of research should not be restored or improved. Again, as with
Certifi cation, the cars are judged against a factory standard and not against
one another. The technical portion of the judging is eliminated and instead
the Corvettes must complete a 10-mile road test under their own power.
Survivors must pass at least 3 of the 4 categories of exterior, interior, engine
compartment and chassis.
