Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I am learning quickly about O-Type anti-spin rears:-)
Chatted with Greg Rollin at Supercars Unlimited, and Brian Trick Olds rear expert, and I now have the confidence to set up my "Posi" and get it hung on my chassis. Also Tweed V. And Dave H are helping me on FB (It takes a community) Thanks to all 4 guys!!! Now I want to build a 4.66 for PSMCDR but need to focus!!! I like these rear ends as the axles Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ended up adding 0.012" to each side of the posi to bring it back within specs:-)
She should grab and go now:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
A couple more little items like putting the axles back in, red Loctite here and there, adding gear oil and posi additive, gasket and cover, and I hope to install this weekend.
I can't find my NOS posi tag.......... yet......... Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_5249.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_5250.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Home run today!!
Wrapped up the rear end rebuild. Red locktite for the pinion nut and cross shaft bolt, sealant on the pinion yoke splines, and white lithium grease on the seal surfaces. Then Lucas gear oil and GM posi additive:-) I even restored the original cover bolts. Done!! My neighbor, Jamie and I installed the differential in the frame, that felt good!! I put the springs and insulators in. Next step is to paint the shocks and install. (I am using generic shocks as the repop spirals are so expensive and these are an easy upgrade in future if the need arises) I also may get drag shocks for PSMCDR) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_5252.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_5253.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_5254.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_5256.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_5259.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_5263.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5264.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_5265.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5267.jpg |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Just wanted to say that this is one of the more interesting threads and a cool story about a great car. I have been following from the beginning, and I admire what you are doing.
Keep up the great work, and I appreciate you sharing your story. Matt |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Dan: Check mark, the original tubes, the new ones are easy to go, check:-)
Matt: Each item is new to me so the excitement is real!!! Thanks for following along, it means a lot to me:-) Ryan PS: my engine builder search continues......... I have one quote due this week.......... Fingers crossed. I am not the usually guy who accepts entering a project with general goals and maybes and ambiguity. My scope of work is getting pretty specific, but with specific requirements it has I think driven the price up a few times...... |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I had a full day to work on the chassis today:-)

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks for the positive feedback!!
I am looking at the next steps and the next few parts needed...... Front coil springs are next on the list. Borrowed the coil spring compressor and bought yellow paint for my brake and fuel line clips. (I put them on but should have painted first, now I have to try to get hem off in tact....... media blast them and paint) Ryan PS: INFO NEEDED: What preparation and what products, and what process is used to paint/colour some of the body mounts to the original teal colour? Wax and grease remover and then vinyl paint? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_5366.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5367.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
PS: INFO NEEDED:
What is a good quality pilot bushing? Good quality bronze, not steel covered in bronze looking coating. What is a good quality throw out bearing to use? Who sells a good quality clutch fork? Mine is damaged and welded and ground on the tips:-( Who sells a good quality 4 speed transmission slip yoke? I have been using Inline Tube and Supercars Unlimited but looking for other suggestions. I use roller pilot bearings, get them from Jegs or Summit

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks guys, great advice!
Ryan PS: I installed one coil spring this morning:-) I will post pics later. It went very well, a few trials but all good. The powder coating saved everything getting scratched to s###. |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Passenger side coil spring install:-)
I media blasted my original shims and painted them, the inline tube shims don't really look like the originals:-( It took a bit of trial and improvement to get the spring compressor located in the spring perfectly so I could compress the spring enough to install and yet still remove the compressor, and not interfere with the upper spring pocket, or lower control arm....... I took the pictures to try to replicate the set up for coil spring number 2:-) My only issue was that the powder coating is slippery and the compressor spoon wanted to slip/rotate up the coil and the hooks wanted to slip/rotate down the coil. (If that makes sense?) (basically the compressor wanted to rotate on the axis of the coil spring instead of compressing the coil spring) so I added scotch brite for traction on all contact points and it did not slip at all after wards. I wish I had time to do the driver CS today but lots of other fun stuff planned, only time to post a few pics and go. Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_0001.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_0002.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_0003.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_0004.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_0005.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_0007.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_0008.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_0009.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
have the same compressor, i've used heater hose on the flat end to keep it from slipping
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Good idea, that would work nicely as well.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Drivers side coil spring installed "I can't believe it's not butter"
Smooth!!!!! Ryan PS: Now started to put the stabilizer end links on just because they were handy, but hard to get the thread started, put them together and tightened them up a bit out of the car to get them squeezed a bit. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_0042.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_0043.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_0044.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_0045.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Simple.....use a small axle strap and crank the stablilzer bar down to the link
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks, my fingers are bleeding and no joy:-(
I will give her the strap tomorrow:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
The strap worked but even with a ratchet strap they were tough to get started.
I installed the front shocks, and prepped the next few items. I need to media blast the special center upper spindle to backing plate bolts. Ryan PS: I used the old upper control arm cross shaft nuts so I can save the new lock nuts for final alignment. They look a little crappy but all the lock nuts I am tying to use only once. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_0053.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_0055.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_0056.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_0057.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_0059.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_0064.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I just noticed your engine mounts are not yet installed
Those should have been installed first.....now with your control arms all in....makes it a bit more difficult to get at the back side of the bolts? It would have been easy to get to with the control arms out....to simply reach inside the frame at the back side of the bolts. Now you'll need to use some long extensions and swivels. Nothing you can't handle Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks Dan, I knowingly skipped this step, the bolts in the AMK Chevelle kit don't suit so I need to get a few more phos coated washers and then install. Also the transmission cross member bolts don't match so I need to sort that as well. Figuring these items out as I go.
I looked at it a few times and plan to cuss a little but need to move on, I haven't hit up the local hardware store yet......... JOKE. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Your bolts probably face outward like a Buick exposing the threads.
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Dan: I remember the engine mount bolts facing out as you mentioned, but I will double check before installing.
I got a little progress tonight:-) Installed the front backing plates, and the tie rod sleeves as well as one outer tie rod. Pretty sure I have an extra inner that was in the bag marker outer, the thread on one outer is the opposite hand to what is should be:-( (yes I know they are one side left hand one side right hand) I have a small leak on the rear end on the differential cover:-( I will get a clean container and take the cover off and see what is up? Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5380.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_5375.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5377.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_5379.jpg |

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psii1vp03s.jpg Dan </div></div> Thanks Dan, now I need to get a few fasteners:-) The new owner of the Burnisher Brown Parchment brother to my car sold recently at Nickey told when/if he restores his car he won't document anything...... he said he will just follow my thread:-) I am sure he will but a nice compliment none the less:-) (Man he has some W-Machines:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Better to have a leak now than later.
Save that fluid. Did you use a gasket only? Gasket and RTV Sealant? Lose the Gasket and only use Black RTV Sealant.....let it dry for a day and add gear oil.....through the fill plug! Dan |
