You guys are all welcome to play in my sandbox any time:-)
Just don't wind me up like Dan:-) Ryan PS: Here is a nice picture I bought at the car show last weekend, a Carter Chev/Olds 1969 Olds Cutlass S Holiday Coupe W31 Drag Car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...ds_w31_syc.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I started getting prepared to install suspension bushings, and ball joints.
Making up a few cups to match the Threaded C-Clamp and the corresponding bushing. I watched a few BFH you-tube install videos but hold my nice powder coated parts in too high a regard to use that method. If you have great articles to share on the subject of GM A-Body suspension reassembly I am all ears/eyes. (Please share) Of Course I am using Dan's most recent Chevelle thread, but more good info is never a negative. Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan if those drawings and measurement don't work. I put together this, I believe this works every time!
Maybe this is why Dan didn't for my help when he did my control arm bushings?????? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_4197.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very specific, detailed, instructions!!!! I like the big smile on the bushing installation technician/BFH operator :-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
That picture is before the BFH hit his thumb.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
With this method.....YOU ARE GOING TO NEED ANOTHER SET OF HANDS......TO AVOID SCRATCHING.....with a hydraulic press.....it's it so much easier. You do not have to fight with the a hand held press.....and or having the control arm move around or perhaps fall out of your hand. JUST SAYING.
SEE IF A LOCAL BUDDY HAS A PRESS YOU CAN BORROW for a few hours. Save yourself a bunch of time and aggrevation. EMAIL SENT. Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan.....is not that skinny
Dan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Shinny:-) FUNNY:-(
Terry offered his press, the cups I make up will work even better in the press and as you mentioned much more controlled:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Nice....use the press....much better results

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan
Weather you use a press or clamps, ensure your control arms are free of paint or powder coat on the mounting surfaces. Next place all bushings in the freezer overnight or 2-3 hours before installation. This shrinks the metal enough for an easy install. It also helps if the metal can be warmed up enough to expand yet not too hot to touch. |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Great advice, thanks Paul
They masked off all the bushing surfaces except the upper "ears" on the rear end housing, should I sand this off? Ryan |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Dad and I had a fun day in the garage:-)
We installed all the bushings except the front upper control arm bushings, installed the front lowers, rear upper and lowers, and trailing arms. Huge success!!!! We used the threaded clamp exactly as the assembly manual explains and all went very well. i had all the preparations done so we have one a try, it went well and we couldn't get stopped:-) Pictures later, I have to get pretty for a family night:-) Fun day all around:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Happy Daddy!!
This assembly was much faster than I thought:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_5045.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_5046.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_5047.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5048.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
We had to be careful to get the ball joints started straight, they are a tight press fit.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
It felt so good to install parts on the frame today
I checked a few times back to page 100 on this thread to make sure each arm was in the right place:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_5065.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_5066.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_5067.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_5068.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
We even added non stock trailing arms:-)
The bolts for the rear lower arms at the front are different than all the rest, and just like my original pictures each bolt is in the same orientation:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_5069.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_5070.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-img_5071.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5072.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Yeah!!
Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_5073.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5074.jpg PS: Started preparing to assemble the front upper control arms, by my measurements the cross shafts are not side specific and don't matter if they are installed 180 degrees either way....... |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Getting ready to assembly the front uppers.
Installed the cross member. I enjoy using the assembly manual:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...1-img_5077.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_5078.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-img_5079.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-img_5080.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_5081.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-img_5082.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I think we've all had stuff like that laying on their garage floor....I know I sure have! Great job Ryan!!!

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
----Ryan,,,That assembly manual is about 100% better than the 67 manual I have. I'm impressed! Where did that come from?
----By the way, I still have that trunk divider for you. Didn't want you to even have postage on it so Ill get it to you when our paths cross again......Bill S |

For example, do the cross member bolts go from the top or up from the bottom? This manual shows how the bolts were installed in each type of vehicle:-) I looked page by page through the chassis manual and did not find this detail. The page that shows how each part of the chassis was to be painted is a real gem. PS: I would much rather visit again someday soon and take that Olds part off your hands than get it in the mail:-) I will be heading to MI soon for work:-) Ryan |

Ryan, check out my pictures on how we used the correct spring compressor when installing the front suspension if you haven't gotten that far yet.
