Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
I remember you waiting to talk to the RideTech people...and wait. Then they had to get their senior guy there to come and talk to you-who basically told you to bring it to If I remember right, Jasper Indiana.....
Glad that you got it all figured out with help from Mark! |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Ken, one thing about you is you never sleep and always look for a better way to make something work. Too many people shrug their shoulders and say "they all do that" or "that is the factory design and there is nothing you can do about it". Here's proof that there is a better way to do it and to do some research and not just shrug it off when something is not right. Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
The Evolution continues.......When the car was finished 5 years ago, I installed the Dakota Digital Instrument cluster available at the time......As with everything, product development moves on....Since then they have developed and improved their product.........they also came out with a module that plugs into the OBD plug and feeds all the info to the cluster from the ECM directly.......Pretty neat stuff......Here are the latest changes.......
Old Cluster http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...E55A8161_1.jpg New Set-up........ http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...0ED2549B7A.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...BAF451F3F1.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...83D8B712ED.jpg |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
The learning curve continues.......In swapping the parts over originally, I was so ecstatic with the steering corrections that I just accepted everything as is was.........and after driving the car on the Good Guys Road Tour this year and driving thru a highway construction zone and after hitting a dipped area at highway speed....I heard a scraping sound........Hummmm!!!.....When we got home I put the car up on the lift to change the oil and I noticed the center link had a scraped area on it.........so.....I then really looked at the install closer and noticed the center link was below the front cross member (remember that on the initial install I had to add additional mounting holes in the frame to accommodate the 67 Pitman Arm which was 3/4" lower than the 66 unit) See Pictures.....So.....I re-installed the 66 Pitman to raise the center link up.......and I installed the idler arm in the original holes which were set for the 66 Pitman arm......Perfect......Center link is now even with the bottom of the cross member......took the car today and got the front end aligned again......Drives perfect......So....If you are doing this swap I would just basically change the Idler arm assy and the center link......You can get by with the 66 steering arms.....(someone else did the swap with the stock arms and there are no problems doing it that way)........

R&D strikes again!!

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Mighty kind of you to do all of the engineering for the "suspension" company Ken.
Your patience is admirable! |
Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
A couple of things still needed refinement.......Does it ever end.......When I put the car together I used the Lokar mechanical shift linkage from the column shift to the trans.......worked good, but.....When you would take off with a little Pedal.......the linkage would go from overdive to drive.........so.....I changed it around to a cable shift system........Now it stays where it is supposed to be........and ....I rewired the car to get rid of the old wires and glass fused panel........I bought a American Autowire Classic upgrade kit.......Now we have a up to date fuse panel and all new wires.........In stripping the old wires out I found some wires from the old dash system that had the insulation burnt off.........Of course that was from it's Nu Yawk dayz.............All fixed and neatened up......now we just need the weather.........
New Cable shift linkage http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...EE2C320C4C.jpg Old Wires........Rats Nest http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...64E55AC560.jpg Stripped out..... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...516EC872F8.jpg All the old wires gone............ http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...88F231E16B.jpg When I finished it and started it up everything worked perfectly...........LOL........... |
Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Way cool!

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
From Sunday July 24th, 2011 to today (1.15.17)...............and still counting!
Your persistence is inspiring! |
So........The story continues with the brake issues that I have had with this car since it's completion........Never again with this crap.......I bought a 4 wheel disc brake set-up thinking it would be a matched set-up and just bolt it on...........They sent the wrong pads with the kit to start with.......then found out the master cylinder wasn't sized correctly to work with the supplied vacuum booster.......Put the Hydro boost on and everything worked fine.......Yesterday I parked the car on a incline and applied the parking brake .......put the car in neutral and it rolled backwards........Humm !!!!.......I have a E-brake pedal but no stopping power........Get it home and put it up on the lift .........These are the GM Seville rear calipers so I'm sure it's the inherent problem associated with this set-up.....even with the brake applied the pads were loose in the calipers...........Now I know why GM stopped using this design.........anyhow..........Ordered a new rear Disc set-up with expanding drum E-brake.........Again.......I now realize I can't afford Cheap Stuff.........Going to do it the right way .........Here are some pic's.......New parts should be waiting for me when I get home later
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...C3FC38B08C.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...001540F52F.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...46C8CFCE5A.jpg |
I considered one of those CPP systems, but your experience along with the experience of may others has changed my mind.
|
Yep. Better systems out there
|
Amazing what passes as acceptable these days... Thanks for sharing Ken!
|
It never ends..........When I built the car originally, it had a 10 bolt in it.........so.....I looked around and bought a 12 housing off eBay........I took it over to Chassis Service in Beach Park and told Jimmy to go thru it and put in everything new.......Bearing, axles, Posi, Ring and Pinion, etc........So....when I picked it up I remember Jimmy saying something about the large axle bearings..........I didn't pay much attention because everything fit and it didn't matter at the time.........
So........Today the "Real" rear brake system showed up........I opened up the boxes and realized right away there were some issues......So, I started measuring things.......what the heck is going on here.........I could tell by looking that the locating dia on the E-Brake shoe mounting plate that bolts to the axle flange was smaller than the dia on the axle flange on the housing ( The dia that originally located the drum brake backing plate)........as I measured it seems the new plate had a 2.718 bore thru it........The dia on the axle housing was 3.438........That's when I remembered the comment about the bigger bearings, hence the larger dia...........Damm.....Here we go again.......That housing must be a heavy duty unit from a station wagon or something.........Darn.....Here we go again......Talked to the Tech at Wilwood and he was just as confused as I was..........Anyone know anything about these rear ends ?????? |
Is it a truck 12 bolt -- I seem to remember they used a larger OD bearing ... TAZ
|
If you are looking for another rear, Desert Valley Auto Parts near us has several 65-66 big cars that still have 12 bolts in them. At least they did last time we were there. Just saying. :)
|
Thanks...........This car stuff is hard......Looks like maybe I'll be putting the old brake system back on for now.........Dammmm!!!!
|
Ken, any possibility that wildwood sent you the wrong stuff? Just sayin', it happens. Even though it wasn't the greatest setup, the cpp stuff fit. Damn beater issues.

Ken |
ken, pretty sure all the '65-'70 b-body 12 bolts used the larger bearings
|
Found out today that the Big Bearing rears were installed in Impala Station Wagons.......And I thought I knew everything.............LOL.....Like I said before......This car stuff is Hard !!!!!!!
|
Got it figured out today.........The 66 Impala Wagon rear axle assy with the big bearings has the same Housing Tube dia ,Flange bolt pattern and Axle / Flange spacing as the 59-64 Impala axle assy...........Ordered the correct kit today........Learn something every day
Ken |
Got the new kit and got it installed.....I couldn't find any documented info on these big bearing rear ends, but........I bought the 59-64 Impala kit and everything was perfect.....bolt pattern.......Perfect!!!......Axle offset.....Perfect!!!.......E-Brake......Perfect !!!!.........LOL........Not cheap but worth every penny.........I also couldn't find and stamping on the rear either.......Hummmmm!!!!.....I also had to order the Wilwood E-Brake cable kit as what I had wouldn't work.......

Looks like a cool set up.
|
"Got it figured out" guy!:beers:
|
NICE !!! Back in the day when we worked on our cars it was a hundred bucks here and a hundred bucks there and to us that was a lot of money. We worked hard to come up with that money. Now today it's a thousand bucks here and a thousand bucks there. Lots more pennies.
