Fix a water leak in the basement, I found it last night.... a copper water pipe leaking at a coupling:-( above the nice built in shelves Dad and I put in. Attend a car show in Toronto Saturday.... Motorama..... Who will I meet there... Quik9r.... Chuck Frame...... RamblerDealer, Tracker1, Courtney Hansen? But seriously, I am meeting a double recommended engine builder in Guelph Monday after work, I have been researching diligently how to rebuild my W-31....... The Internet is good and bad:-) but mostly good. I have kept a little quiet on this topic as most Olds engine build threads somehow end up a little spicy. I normally try to take in everybody's advice but for an engine build I think I will make a great plan once I pick a builder and share the pictures as we paint it Fusick Oldsmobile Gold:-) (TBD) Also I have a little garage lighting and organization next weekend. Ryan PS: I decided to powdercoat the two Kelsey Wheels Black as they are already different, I can put on a set of sacrificial lambs:-) |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
did you get a positive ID on the Kelsey wheels? I don't think I can get away Saturday, sorry.

Nothing yet..... I haven't researched it either....... Having a feeling I may just take all the rims in primer, need to pull back on the reins a little:-( Dan put me onto a paint supplier that sells matching Laquer so I may paint a set green myself (this will get me going) Getting myself all worked up about the engine build.... Best to spend all the right money on the engine rebuild than an extra set of rims:-) Bummer, on the show (no show) I will take pictures of all the Ramblers:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

New parts:-)
Yup, I have the Lucas 80W/90 ready to go in the M20 and the rear end. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
good call on the primer for the wheels, I wonder if you should get some pictures of the wheel stamping codes before any primer or paint?
I wonder if an on-line search for those local Canadian boys that took a 330 Olds to the engine masters challenge several years ago would show up their contact info? |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Had an inspiring day today!!
Attended Motorama and met up with (Chevelle Guys) Chuck Frame and Dan Orgill had a great visit, saw lots of cool cars!! Also met "Colesy" of "Colesy's Place" he regails us daily on FB with Canadian drag race history which I love!! Also met Terry Denomme Editor of Canadian Hot Rods and Bone Stock, ordered a subscription to BS:-) and ordered a back issue with Wayne Smiths Central Chevrolet COPO Chevelle featured...... May have shared a little bit about my BS car to drop a hint or two doesn't hurt:-) He shared an exciting Olds article coming next month...... W-31......... Original Owner......... Canadian ordered...... You know "The Usual" I visited a few engine parts suppliers Howard Cams, Mahle pistons, etc but Olds is a bit of an anomaly:-( Rods, pistons, etc, not many options:-( Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have been researching SBO engine builds to the point I think I have officially seen plans, arguments, and counter arguments to each plan, struggling to find a good plan to stick to:-)
I see some awesome Oldsmobile engine builders on ClassicOldsmobile.com so I plan to start a thread there (please don't hate) Some of the Olds guys sneak on here and peak at my thread but some wouldn't know what a "Yanko" even is:-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Already a few bites on CO:-)
Also visited a recommended Engine builder today, we are on the same page budget wise...... That kind of scared me honestly:-) We discussed all the processes and parts generally...... I am pondering..... TBD Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ponder away....I am confident that you will make the right decision

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
My current train of thought is a simple (cost effective) rebuild of the warranty short block and original top end to use for street fun.
The original stuff is rough and needs to be saved from it's life of sitting disassembled. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan, the Canadian Olds builders were Robinson Analytical from Grimsby Ont. The article was in Nov 2008 Popular
Hot Rodding, and it was Dale and Glenn Robinson, they built an Engine Masters SBO. Seems they built a $50 307 olds into a 435hp hot rod motor for the competition. I don't know these guys but they seem to know SBOs, and Grimsby is not far from here. May be worth checking out?? |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Dale is "gmrocket" on ROP... isn't on CO as far as I know.
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
My 83' Hurst Olds had the "little" 307 and a 200 tranny. Tweaked the QJ, timing, and kit in the 200 -- it cranked pretty good. I think it had a 3:73 cog out back ... TAZ

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I got word the media blast will be done tomorrow, so I can go look at the parts after work tomorrow:-)
The downtime has been nice, and my garage still has no lights:-( Bad boy!! They plan to powder coat Thursday:-) I am excited and terrified:-) I have a call tonight with an Olds guy who is willing to share his W-31 build plan, and he has Dyno proof of his most recent combination :-) ClassicOldsmobile.com guys are jumping in with spicy and mild W-31 build information :-) Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Very cool Ryan!
|
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
My media blasting is done, and I am working with the company to finish up a few details.
Looks like two rear body mount holes are a little more deteriorated than I am comfortable leaving as is. (They would never be a problem, and they would never be seen, but that is not the standard I am holding myself to:-)I will have lots of opportunity for compromise in future, but not on the base frame of the car. Check out how nice my parts are:-) No pitting to speak of:-) I could see stamps, all over the place:-) A little delay to weld the mounts and have the parts re-blasted but then I will get shiny parts........... getting impatient:-( Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-img_4647.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7-img_4674.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_4694.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_4713.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...2-img_4680.jpg |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks guys!!
I had to pull a dent out of one rear lower control arm, it is ready to reblast. The rims are ready to pick up. (Prime only) The frame is ready to pick up and take home for welding. Then it will be re-blasted lightly, and I have asked for more attention to the nooks and crannies. The small parts will be lightly reblasted and powder coated soon, prolly when the frame returns it will all be done at the same time. Ryan Getting lots of engine build support on Classic Oldsmobile, even Dan Vasic :-) (he doesn't like that I apologized for being a former Chevelle guy...... How Canadian is that? :-) PS: I still love Chevelles, but only "Identify" as a Chevelle Guy when I own one:-) (not a poser) |
