This was some progress today, as I have gone from no way to weld at home to stove pulled away from the wall, power cord out the front door to the garage MIG welder making nice bacon frying sounds:-)

The body mounts are welded up and the shock holes, need to dress them up and photo shoot later or tommorrow:-)

Still have to touch up the two mount repairs today with a wheel, and carve the shock holes back to original.

Got my front brake drums back from machining:-) Someone banged up the fronts of both of them:-(
Now I have to find out what the drum size is supposed to be.... PIM? One is 9.540", and one is 9.550"

Whoot whoot!!

Thanks to Terry for the welder and to Scott who came over and welded for me:-)

I discard drums is 9.590....do your drums have a "safe to" stamp on them?

If someone "banged up" your drums....it's not the place to do repeat business with

I used an ink pen and shaded the whole area, then clamped on the repair ring, then scribed in the yellow ink, then used a die grinder to open up to the scribe line.

The yellow is probably similar to what line workers paint daub a torqued fastener for example.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Agreed to a Media Blaster and Powder Coater:-)

Close to home, recommended by a friend who has used their services recently and for a good while. Had a visit after work today and the plan is set:-)

"RamblinDealer" and I will find a good time soon to drop off the frame and all other items at the blaster of choice. (I was really concerned about the first place I visited using a second facility for blasting but this company chemically cleans the parts before Powder Coat so this made me feel confident)

They obviously media blast each item. (I can double duct tape items like the spindles or they will do it if i don't)

Then The powder coater will pick up all items, and let me know so i can visit and inspect.
any items I wish I can take home again up to and including the frame to fill, sand and prepare as perfectly as I wish:-)

The fill, sand step is usually a no-no but this coater recommends Lab Metal (High Temp repair and patching compound)

http://www.alvinproducts.com/Portals...ldatasheet.pdf

http://www.alvinproducts.com/Product...Lab-metal.aspx

The coater would then cure the filler.

The coater chemically cleans each item to remove any oils, dirt, residue etc to prevent gassing.

The coater then plugs holes with high temp plugs, and masks off any areas like the surfaces ball joints and bushings will go into.

Then the coater will powder coat the grey colour, the 60 degree semi gloss black, and we will figure out a code 57 Glade Green colour for the rims. followed by curing at 400F for (I forget how long he said)

Super excited to see shiny parts:-)

Ryan

PS: Thanks for all the feedback, I do listen and process as people share advice, I think I have found a best process for my build and it takes into account all the ideas and experience shared here!!! I have had PM's and E-Mails as well as messages here to make sure I get the pitted parts smooth before shiny:-)

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

Step #2:-)

I ordered all the rear end rebuild items today from Greg Rollin at Supercars Unlimited. bearings, seals, crush sleeve, anti-spin spring, etc, etc, etc I didn't order the full clutch package as mine looked and measured within 0.002" of NOS.

Step #3:-)

I ordered a lot of various items from Inline Tube as well just to have a trifecta of Muscle Car goodness!!!!! I ordered items like: Z bar rebuild kit, core support mounts and shims, etc, stickers, etc, trans mount, engine mounts, etc, etc.

Having a bit of a self induced W-31 overload today:-)

Spent some time preparing today so everything is ready to go to media blast after work Monday.

Had the girl out to pull out the jack stands so i could get the frame on the ground, amazed how light they are:-)

I used a flapper wheel to smooth the welded mounts, and finished the shock bolt hole repairs.

I swept after the photos:-) (but promise to get everything sorted out.

While the frame is away I plan to install my new lights, put all my tools in one tool box and get one or two out of the garage, put up a new shelf I got out of the scrap bin at work, and reorganize most items in general so there is more work space:-)

Agree very exciting...... Shiny parts....... My first time :-)

PS: visited with a trusted local Mechanic and he gave me a contact in Guelph who he highly recommends, zero issues!! Plan to visit next week.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe

We have lift off!!

Terry picked up my frame and rear end housing, and followed me to the media blaster. I pre-loaded my car with all the loose parts. This trip went off without a hitch, and the blaster is at a Mennonite farm, in my experience this is a good thing!!

Terry has been mentioning that he thinks my car has two different rim widths, but I was sure it doesn't...... He found a Kelsey Hayes sticker inside one of the two black rims and we checked them against the green rims and turns out the offset is different:-) these rims are 14 X 6 but "wide track" I will post pictures latter.

I am so excited to have made it to this critical step!!! So excited I called Al Stager to chat about his old car!
He was very happy to hear about the progress and explained how the frames were made new and painted new, as he was a Tool Maker at Bud in Kitchener where these frames were made new back in the day:-)

Al also mentioned that the original engine failed after a few years of use, not in the first year as I understood before.

I invited Al over as soon as I have shiny parts to show off, and we will go look over the body etc at the same time.

I am one very happy guy today!!

Ryan

Thanks again Terry, i really appreciate your help, but 100 times more value making a new friend!! Funny how the Internet is good to find people all over the world with similar interests and also 2 miles away:-)

I think I have those same pictures! Actually, several sets of them! Way to go Ryan, please make sure everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is tagged and bagged. I learned many years ago, that when boxing stuff, to write on the box, (or tape a list of the contents) what is inside that box. It'll save time when reassembling the puzzle. Looks like the project is progressing nicely. Keep up the good work! Remember.......don't discard ANYTHING at ANYTIME until you are 110% finished!!!

Great point about bagging and tagging, these need to be loose so they can blast them.

I have a box of items I should throw away but have specific instructions not to!!
This has already been useful several times to compare new black body bushings to the originals (some are teal)
Also I found the caged body mount nut in this box, the one I need to repair and weld back into the support brace beside the gas tank.

I have more parts on order so I have a new shelf to store these (notes on the boxes)

Thanks for the comments, I am learning this stuff as I go!!
