Plymouth was preparing a production 1966 Barracuda GT that would have allowed it to race in FIA Group 3. There was a 13 page letter that outlined how all cars were to be built: a 318 (a year before the 318 was made available in 1967), aluminum intake with 600 CFM Holley 4 BBL, 4 speed trans, 8 quart oil pan, disc brakes, trunk mounted battery, 15x7 aluminum and steel wheels, Plexiglass rear window, lightweight seats, steel tube headers with full length dual exhaust and instead of a rear seat an 18 gallon aux gas tank which would have given the car a total of 40 gallons for endurance races. So what happened? It is speculated that after seeing Ford only sold 561 1965 Shelby GT350 Mustangs management got cold feet. |

Look how far ahead of time Buick was. This photo was taken in 1961 for proposed tops for targeted women convertible buyers. This predated the Mopar "Mod Top" by 8 years. |

Stripes delete, no performance hood treatment and no vinyl top. Very understated. . . . http://s26.postimg.cc/ak6qs3uuh/image.jpg |

Somewhere in this thread is this exact car. It's red and has very few miles on it. Hot Rod Magazine did an in-depth on it. |
Did you know . . .
Of all the auto companies that used them only Ford called them Magnum 500 wheels which was the name Motor Wheel Corp used when it sold them as aftermarket wheels. http://s26.postimg.cc/9vp611yax/screenshot_2845.png AMC: Mag style wheels http://s26.postimg.cc/evmm903xl/image.jpg BUICK: Chrome-plated wheel http://s26.postimg.cc/hecwnff1l/1967...cle_f_2048.jpg CHEVROLET: Super Sport wheel http://s26.postimg.cc/ivycyzjs9/1969...ars_red_ss.jpg DODGE/PLYMOUTH: Chrome Road Wheel http://s26.postimg.cc/ikgwm83c9/1967...S23_muscle.jpg OLDSMOBILE: Super Stock I http://s26.postimg.cc/svt9evv1l/bbb.jpg |

The new for 1967 Pontiac Rally II wheel was manufactured for Pontiac by Motor Wheel Corp. Pontiac wanted a different design then the "Magnum 500" for it's cars. |
What an incredible variety of performance cars we had to choose from in the 60's, early 70's. Colors, options, interior colors, engines, transmissions, stripes, wheels. This thread really highlights that variety!

That's the original photo - an unused promo/brochure photo of a 1968 SS 396 Camaro. Here is the photo cropped which IMO works better for this thread: http://s26.postimg.cc/jusypvi7d/ooo.jpg |

In 1967 the Hemi was supposedly only available in the GTX. This is 1 of 3 1967 Hemi Satellite Hardtops and the only one with an auto trans. The other two have 4 speeds. |

For the 1969 Boss 302, the body colored mirrors were an option. For 1970, they were standard equipment |

When Jess Tyree called John Z Delorean in 1963 looking for a 1962 421 SD Catalina John told him he could go to the Ford Arizona Proving Grounds and pick one up there. Pontiac had loaned it to Ford (without the aluminum parts) so Ford could test the car against the 406 Galaxie. Once Tyree got the car back to his shop Delorean sent him the complete aluminum parts package including the rare aluminum doors. |

The rules of NHRA Stock did not prevent women from racing so when Carol Cox showed up at Indy 1961 to race her Pontiac she was so outraged that NHRA denied her entrance, she went to the local press who pressured NHRA to "follow your own rules." Carol went down in history as the first woman ever to win an NHRA event. |

The fastest time ever recorded by a magazine testing muscle cars was by Popular Hot Rodding. It tested a 1967 427 Stage III Nickey Camaro SS with slicks and a 4.88 rear. Best time: 11.30 @ 123 MPH. |

Phil Bonner's Thunderbolt was originally set up to run in NASCAR. After seeing the car lap all contenders in Daytona 500 trials Bill France said "no way" so the car was given to Bonner to run NHRA Super Stock. |

The first 50 Thunderbolts had fiberglass front bumpers and matching gravel pans. NHRA said "no more fiberglass parts - must be metal" so Ford used aluminum and retrofit them. |

By February 1968 Ford's share of the performance car market had dropped to just 8%. Enter the 1968.5 428 CJ Mustang GT as the turn around car. By the end of the 1969 model year Ford's share was almost 20%. |

The first Super Stock engine to be refactored by NHRA was the 1964 A990 Race Hemi. NHRA refactored Chrysler's advertised 425 HP up to 500 HP. |

Originally the NHRA did not allow 1969 A12 Road Runners and Super Bees to compete in Stock. NHRA felt it was a Super Stock car. When Chrysler showed NHRA that they were selling thousands of them for the street NHRA refactored the 440+6's horsepower very close to the Street Hemi (450 HP) making the A12 uncompetitive. |

Steve McQueen's character Frank Bullitt was modeled after a real San Francisco Police Inspector named Dave Toschi who became famous as the lead detective in the Zodiac Killer case http://s28.postimg.cc/a7cz9y00d/untitled.png He also adopted Toschi's unusual (at the time) "upside down" quick draw shoulder holster for the movie |
