Dad showed me the innards of a couple of 8 tracks last week when he repaired my Magical Mystery Tour cassette...how those things wind on the outside while feeding from the center is mind boggling!

How about a four track. had one in my 66 chevelle ss.
my friend was power shifting my car into 3rd and hit the tape deck with his knucles,let go of the clutch while the trany was in between second and third at 6000 rpm. Scattered the saginaw
into a million pieces.Thank god. Gm warantied this piece of
crap 6 times. I finally put in an m21.Took out the 4track.

Some units would have 4 wires - power, ground and left & right speaker. You would then run a wire from each speaker to a ground location.
They actually used to sell a bracket you mounted to the bottom of your dash, with a corresponding bracket mounted to the top of the tape deck. When you parked you would slide the deck out of the top mount and stash it in your trunk. Midnight Auto always did a brisk business in 8-Track players!

You know it's hard to remember how they did sound, cause the pipes were usually so loud you couldn't hear it anyway, somebody was yellin for a beer in the back seat, or you were tryin to talk some sweet thing in a mini skirt into the car. Honestly, I rarely had the radio/tape player on if the car was running. The sweet sound of solid lifters buzzing and the drone from header mufflers and shorty pipes combined with the 4.10 gears was all I needed. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
