OMG I just spit coke all over the keyboard... that's a damn good one Steve... maybe it's in the Coach Handbag I bought her for Valentines Day... it sure is big enough... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif [/ QUOTE ] I was trying to figure out a way to write it without it sounding too perverted. Oh well... I do have my 35 year old Craftsman ring compressor if you really need to borrow one. It has worked on many a small block Chevy, half a dozen 426 Hemis and I even taught my daughter how to use it when we were putting together the 455-HO. She's gonna make some car guy a happy man some day. He better be rich, though. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
I am actually going to buy a good one tomorrow. Ring compressor that is... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif The girlfriend has no idea what a crankshaft or ring compressor is... I was telling her about what we were doing and she listened very intently then I said "do you even know what I am talking about" to which she replied... "I have no idea" unfortunately I know this too will change... it will be... you are messing with a car again... at least she knows what I am laying under https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif |

LOOK I "found" a yellowed washer bottle! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Man if you guys need yellow washer bottles just ask your friends up north. I don't know if it was the cold or what but yellow is the common color. I cannot find white ones. That one in the picture is white to us. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

James, I have a DZ block that is 2 days from yours. Mine is V0411DZ, D109, 3956618 casting number. The vin number on it I can't read. I wil post a pic later on.
I also have a V1I14DZ, K78, 3932386 casting number with 19N557648 vin number on it. My 69 is a Feb Car 02D with 9N613224 vin number. I have owned my Z for 30 yrs Wayne |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Steve,
Told the girlfriend the story about the ring compressor and she laughed so hard, also told her that I knew eventually the feigned interest in automobiles would wane... she gave me a real serious look as she nodded her head in agreement. James |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Wayne the VO409DZ has no VIN on the oil filter boss, I have searched and searched but cannot find even a trace of a number...

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth

James, I can't find a vin on mine either. I attached a pic of the front pad. My other DZ block has a vin stamped on the front pad in front of the DZ code. The DZ looks like a double stamp, all the other codes on the block indicate it was a 302.

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
That is correct... the early DZ would have it on the top pad... the change over was around January for the Norwood cars and a few months later for Van Nuys.
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
We buttoned up the bottom end last night... She is looking real good https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif... and the DZ looks good as well Steve...
We're gonna put the heads and intake on today... if I could get my hands on a clutch we might be able to get the engine back in place tomorrow... Got a new set of Hooker Super Comps that are matte black Jet Hot Coated... along with a chambered system... can't wait to hear her screaming... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
James, Good idea on the matte black coating on the headers. The car should have a great vintage look with them on. It would be nice to see a photo of how they look.
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Really wished that Jet Hot did a white matte coating... like the older ceramic coated headers.. but the matte black was the next best option... the silver and gloss black and other colors just would not fit with the vintage Patina and Day 2 look of the car. If you want a pic of the headers as they came out of the box I will post one later today... getting ready to go pick up a clutch and gasket set so we can put the heads on later this afternoon.

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
BTW, have you replaced the original rubber brake hoses? Originality is one thing but those original hoses do not last. The may look OK but after 38 years they won't hold the pressure during a panic stop.
I know from experience: I had a front brake hose blow out on a Z11 I had back in 1980, and those hoses were only 11 years old at the time. Forget about the theory that dual master cylinders will divert the fluid to the rear system. Dont bet your life on it! It was quite an adventure: no brakes trying to stop the car as it went down a hill, picking up speed to about 100 mph, on a tree lined road, threading the needle through a four-way intersection with a red light, past a school as the buses were pulling out. I was only able to stop as the car crested the next hill, with the emergency brake jammed all the way to the floor. I was 17 at the time and I have never ignored my brake lines again. Oh, and listen to your mom about always wearing clean underwear. I definitely needed a new pair after that...and a new seat cover as well. |

If you want your headers coated white, look no further - Swain is one of the best in the business: http://www.swaintech.com/store.asp?pid=10969

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Yep replaced the hoses immediately... one thing I am not going to mess around with is the ability to stop a ton and a half of metal...
Brakes are essential... LOL used to think differently... older and wiser now though!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Put the heads on but couldn't get a correct set of intake gaskets nor could I get a clutch today... so the engine will have to wait to be reinstalled for a few more days... or a week... will post the photos of the assembled block and the headers in a little while!

On the T/A I carefully removed the originals, noted the markings and then put them in plastic bags for posterity. Even the original date coated fuel and emission lines as well. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Have to knock the drippers off... and may have to use 2 gaskets contact cemented together... I will know in about 2-3 hours... will report back then.

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
You have to knock the drippers off and use 7/32 felpro cork gaskets...

This car is a money pit to bring back to life....assume it will become someone's personal project and take a few years to complete $20K tops!
The market has slowed and real prices have not increased over the past yr on non collectable quality cars. |

That or you have no real clue that some people actually enjoy preserving historic cars by using their own hands and efforts and not by just throwing cubic yards of money at someone else to do it for them while they sit in their office building somewhere watching their stock portfolio fluctuate. Have a nice day. |

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif I don't need to justify the collectability of the vehicle, the standing offers and invitation to the Vintage Certification program at the Camaro Nationals have done that...
