Dan, that green M/T ad was in the April, 1967 Hot Rod. That would make a great garage poster wouldn't it?

Hey guys having graduated high school in 1965 you'll have gone thru my childhood right here in this thread. There were so many wheels that I had forgot about that I want to thank everyone for keeping it going. And to all of those people that were lucky enough to have the money to actually own some of the wheels back in the sixties have pity on the ones of us that couldn't.

I couldn't afford mag wheels either as all of my cash went into the driveline. For the more impoversihed among us there was good'ol Cal Custom with their "Spider" dress-up kit for stock steelies. Hot Rod, May, 1962.

The factories got the message and one response to the aftermarket wheel craze was Mercury's 1964 Comet Cyclone wheelcover intended to look like a chromed stock wheel. Were these wheelcovers made of metal? I seem to remember a neighbor's '65 Comet with these wheelcovers and I thought they were plastic.

American introduced the 200-S or "Daisy" wheel in 1969. My buddies and I called them "flower mags." Note the "hall of fame" wheels at the top of the ad. Torq-Thrust!

No wonder the women's movement happened. They were tired of constantly washing and changing pillow cases stained by hair goop. Anyone remember the Pomade scene in "Raising Arizona"???

Hey Bill,
Would it be ok if we left this thread as an historical archive for vintage wheels rather than links to wheels for sale? That could be in the classified section. I'd (personally) love to see this thread become a reference for the Day-2 wheels we all grew up with. Period stuff only...
Just a suggestion.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Vintage Wheels

Hi Verne. No problem from me. I put the ebay link in only because there were some nice examples of vintage wheels that might make a good reference for someone. I have absolutely no interest (good or bad) with the seller. I would be happy to edit out the ebay links to clean up the post. Bill D

Check this out. NOS 200-S wheels with the plastic still on the the rims. Came with the center caps and lugs. The one on the left has darkened spokes. Apparently from not being boxed. What's the best way to restore the spokes on these? The difference is more obvious in person.

D, I think you want to use that acid wheel stuff we use on the Satin Drag Centerlines..and a tooth brush,,is it not a Eagle product???

might be a good idea to tape off the lip with the special blue masking tape first so you dont loose the sheen you have

Re: Vintage Wheels

I'm not sure if anyone put up one of these yet. From Jan. '65 PHR

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...65MTad0001.jpg

If you look closely at the hub of the spinner you can see that the tapered edge is rather wide. This is the Rader style. Most spinners that M/T produced had a much narrower edge. Go to the M/T Rader wanted ad and compare to the pic of the wheel on my car. Just another dumb piece of trivia.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

Verne

Verne_Frantz 06-02-2006 12:47 AM

Re: Vintage Wheels

For comparison: here are the most common M/T spinners. The tapered edge is smaller than the Rader style. I've never actually seen the style of the one in the ad above, unless it said Rader.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...-TSpinners.jpg

I've found a few other nice vintage ads for more wheels that I will try to post later. It seems that 1965 was a boom year for the industry. New "mag" wheels came out of the woodwork everywhere! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Here are some more interesting ones, all from June '65 PHR

Never heard of these guys at all. I think they were probably selling other people's wheels.

Here's another fly-by-nite outfit.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...CteitzEqco.jpg

Here's a nice masculine name for you. Somehow I don't think it helped them sell any wheels, because I've never seen one. They have a "flavor" of a Keystone Kustomag, but I guess they just didn't catch on.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3.../tn_Climax.jpg

A name we all know, but wheels that seem a little strange.

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...z/tn_Ansen.jpg

I'm sorry, but I just had to throw this in. This was on the back cover of that issue and it's just too good to pass up.
