Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
That's the good thing about buying a package of Yenkos, you don't need to put exact values on any of them. That's great to see the collection stayed together(at least for the time being). The L89 trim tag is not an original GM tag. It has nothing to do with characters overlapping. So what was this Orange RS/Z28 crossram car that sold for that high of a price?

Seems like every car show I go to the 69 Z's all have xrams, getting so common Id rather see the cars without them. How many xrams did they sell, anyone know? seems like there were one per car nowadays.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Crossram RS Z was a fresh resto and the sheet claimed a GM crossram. I did not look under the hood. It sold for 130K plus 5% fee total 136,500. Another crossram Z claiming GM crossram had a repo crossram with the GM part #.

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Heard through the "grapevine" that a red 69 SS 350 Nova went for around $41k. Now I know it's not as many zeros as the other mega dollar units. But,it is pretty interesting for a small block Nova. Were there any BB Novas other than the Yenko discussed? Sounds like this was quite an event. I'll have to go to one sometime.....

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Its been almost 10 years since I did the Z-11 Impala and that Rally Green Y Nova for Dick B. The Impala I seen a year or 2 ago when it changed hands and it still looked super. Havent seen the Nova since I left down south. Amazing what these cars keep bringing.

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Who did the bodywork on the Z 11 ???
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Both were painted by Kevin Westmoreland in GA. He is a great painter.
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
The aluminum was as straight as steel....pretty scary to have a car like that sitting out in the open with people walking all around it..I heard a good guy got it and also has the Sanders car that the motor in the red one was out of !!!
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Correct, the motor in that one was from the Sanders car. Hard to believe, but that paint on the Z-11 is nothing more than Centari enamel.
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
So there will soon be an original engined Z11...cool.
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Cant be many of them. Where did the car go? Last I knew the Sanders car was in AZ.
|
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Not sure...whoever it is has a few Z 11's...I think he and Fezell are tied !!!

Does anyone have the skinny on this 69 300 Deluxe? Any pictures? Thanks |
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Found pix at the mecum website. Nice looking car https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif . Where did they get the "1 of only 6 built" statistic from? Post 300 L78 numbers are projected at about 140 total and Hardtop 300 L78s are projected at about 180 (per Dan Carr's research). Anybody know where this car was campaigned and set the record? Was this by chance a factory L89 optioned L78? That might account for the "1 of 6". Anybody notice the build date and factory of this car?
Thanks! |
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
is he the same guy that owns westmoreland trucking in kennesaw,ga.?

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
I had heard about this car growing up.
I haven't seen the 69 300 series L-78 since the Chevelle Showdown in 1993,after Brian Caudell restored it. I believe it's a Kansas build Leeds plant. The 1 of 6 claim is a for Aluminum headed L-89's and is a guesstimate as well that has been grossly misquoted over onto these cars now.GM doesn't even know how many were made originally. This isn't an Aluminum head L-89,it was delivered as an L-78 cast iron head to Cliff Parry of Astoria,Il. He drag raced it for one year after he bought it back then.Race track officials had a hard time believeing it was a Legitimate factory built 2 dr sedan 300 series Super Sport L-78 Chevelle,(1969 was the only year this was possible, and very few existed),so Cliff campaigned it as the "GM Reject". He raced it around Iowa & central Illinois and at Beardstown achieved a Super Stock Class National Record. It was forced to run in that class, due to it's questionable claim. It only raced seriously for one year and was soon retired to street racing soon after. Years later it went out to Boyd C. shop in Calif.,then was up for sale at SC Indy months later. When Greg D. bought it in 1989,it had only 6188 miles on it. |
Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
Roger Sortino (WA) owns the Sanders car. I know he was planning to bid on that one to get the engine and make a swap. Rusty had bought the red car minus engine long ago, and by luck found the Sanders engine in a boat. Once those cars became uncompetitive ('64 when the factory backed Mopars and Fords creamed everything else), a lot of Z-11s got small blocks, had the aluminum removed and went back on the streets. Some engines were reused in boats, Chevelles, ect. Some remained with the original cars, but ran Modified Production, like the Strickler car before Bill bought it back.
Very, very few of those cars retain their original engines. And I suppose some that do got decked at some point and the numbers are gone anyway. Verne |

Re: Mecum auction Oct. 2005
The results of this auction have been posted on the Mecum site. There are 14 pages.
The 69 L89, lot S26, went for just under $71K. With the observations made here and judging by the price it went for, it was not a true real L89. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif The prices many of these cars got still amazes me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif SSJunkie68-69 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif |
