Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
IMHO, getting the kids involved is invaluable and will create life long memories. Building the car is a process, just like anything in life.
Looking great! Elon |

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
So, found some of the latest pics - making progress. We usually make about 1 large order of parts per year, just received this year's order and our goal is to fire the engine sometime this year. That's a tall order given what you see in these pics! But, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
No frame! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3067.jpg Clean frame! Lots of undercoating on this car, kept the frame really nice. Can still see the forming marks on it from the factory: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3069.jpg Lots of green overspray on this car - from front to back, sometimes all the way into the driveshaft tunnel: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3074.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3075.jpg Kids sure grow fast! Remember this little guy? Age 4: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...hpaintgun1.jpg Now age 10: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3079.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3078.jpg Taking his time, no runs, nice, even coverage: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3076.jpg Nice job Ben! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3083.jpg Sometimes it's easy to forget that he's just 10 - and when he gets cold and wants to play video games he'll just hide out in the car! You can barely see his head as he's shrunken down in the front seat: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...p/100_3068.jpg |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Well, another year - and unfortunately the car doesn't look much different! However, we have more parts stashed and Ben learned how to weld this past weekend. We plan to paint the frame, firewall and underside with single stage black with flattener, and then spray the rally green overspray. Then hope to install the frame and then the engine / trans.... aggressive plan since racing will start again in April!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...inWelding1.jpg Danny is growing too fast as well - he wants to know when we will start working on his car? http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...owithDanny.jpg Oh well, too much time spent on painting the golf cart this Winter - but, have to cruise in style: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...mbledfront.jpg |

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Yep! Did the whole DP90LF, K36 high build, sealer, 4 coats of base, 4 coats of clear, wet sanded with 1500 & 2000, then cut it, buffed it and polished it! Came out pretty good:

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
A little progress is better than no progress!
We sprayed the frame, firewall, and the front portion of the underside - enough to do the rallye green over spray and install the frame. Thanks to Brian and Frank for the PPG codes for the black and flattener. This won't be a concourse job, (otherwise it would never get done!), but Ben is happy and has a smile on his face - that's all that matters. We need some trans hardware and then we should be close to putting the frame back in and installing the engine/trans! We'll see http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psf08302e3.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psd7c9ef78.jpg Photo'd the all important firewall VIN stamps: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps4949728f.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pse1d57fd7.jpg |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Benjamin's been asking when we can work on his Nova. So, after looking at all of you guys heading out to MCACN we got motivated to spend a day or so to make a little progress on this project.
Everything has just been waiting for us to find the time! The frame looked nice, firewall was ready - even the transmission is done and ready for install! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pss9b0ybks.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pscxgums0w.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psys7qd5at.jpg Ben got comfortable with the HVLP detail gun as he duplicated the rally green over spray onto the floors, fire wall and cowl. This car had a TON of over spray on it, with very little black coverage - so we laid it on pretty heavy. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pstseaitwk.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psnzy5jxqr.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psgqsv8ctp.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psq8a4lkpw.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psgccl1wjx.jpg We drafted Danny to work the engine hoist so we could bolt the frame in & line it up! (I went through a few cans of Mt Dew that weekend!) http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps9e073fwh.jpg |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Looks great Marlin! I really do love seeing your boys not just there, but involved and being responsible for doing some of the work. Thats where the pride comes into it for them.

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
That's great that you keep the kids involved. Those are going to be some nice "first" cars. Looks like a great project!

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Marlin -- how can it get better than this ... The kids, a Nova, Mountain Dew, a dream and thou. But be careful that rat doesn't bite the kid in the butt in that one pic!!@#$ LOL ... TAZ

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Thanks Marlin! Micky is working his magic on it as we speak!
|
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Cool that the kids are getting involved. I was doing the same with my Dad at that age. I've got a tip though.... get your son to wear a respirator when handling that HVLP gun!
I didn't worry about such things when I was a kid either, and I suffered no ill effects. I still do skip the safety equipment most times if it's just a quick rattle can paint job or something even though I know it's wrong (just lazy, I guess). It's not a bad idea to get them into the mindset of using proper safety gear early on. Hopefully that was just a staged photo and he wasn't spraying. |

Both boys really liked the height.... http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps6nib5jp9.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psrrsqlulc.jpg The cold temps are now here, so we'll have to make progress from home garage where it's a little warmer! |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Well, we decided to put a 4 speed transmission into Danny's '67 Camaro RS, and the trans we had already put into Ben's Nova was actually the correct case for a '67. So....we got a 660 box rebuilt by Jody's Transmissions here in PA (highly recommend!!) and then swapped them out this past Sunday afternoon. I thought it would be a good experience for Ben to see how most transmissions are changed - laying on your back, under a car, no headroom or arm room, muscling things around - cursin and swearin while thinking why am I doing this!!! It went way too easy btw, we were done in 2 hours.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ps9ydwb4fd.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psz3cjestv.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psrgtbeery.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...pssibxjzzk.jpg If anyone knows what the VIN decodes as, and knows the original car.... Not that we want to take it back out, but if the box belongs to a rare car.... http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...psvggj3o5p.jpg |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Cool! Did he learn any new swear words? I tend to string a few of them together for better effect. Could send a note to him if he needs help. :-)
|
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Thanks, but he learns enough 'words' on the school bus! Now he curses in German so I don't know what he's saying, he learned them in his AP literature class where they had to read some book....smart kids

Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Nice job on the tranny...looks great.
I believe the "2" designates Pontiac...and if the letter codes work like Chevy, the "B" stands for the Baltimore assembly plant. Of course, I don't know exactly what Pontiac models were produced there, most likely the GTO/Lemans. Again, first rate looking unit! wilma |
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
Yea, Jody does really nice work, and certainly knows his stuff! He did the rear in Benjamin's Nova as well, and will likely do the rear in Danny's Camaro since I'll probably swap out the mono leaf open for a multi leaf posi....where do I stop??
|
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
M...I just noticed that M20 has a drain plug...did your tranny guy add that?
|
Re: 69 SS nova big block car ????
No idea, I forget what it looked like when I gave it to him, but I wouldn't be surprised if he put it in there - actually, I might have asked him to, I simply don't recall. Ben could shift this thing at 7 grand and it won't come apart!
