Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
for those who are wondering I worked at Brigance and Ed at that time advertised himself as Mr.Ed the fastest gun in the west, that was in response to Mr Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge,he would have young guys lined up waiting to see him so he could spec out their new sleeper,or SS.I worked for Ed who's last name is Schoenthaller ( forgive the spelling) when he was partners with John Tufo at West side Ford which was on roosevelt road and the expressway next to the cemetary,it's now a propane gas dealer.Ed was always into cars and is quite a collector even today, for those looking for the info on the muscle cars from Brigance he is the man to speak to.I don't recall the name but I know he now owns a Pontiac dealership in the west suburbs, perhaps some one else knows something,I would like to talk to anyone from the old Brigance days it was quite a place to work and really defied logic,we had great people to work with and it produced many of the dealers you see in business today.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
I worked with Audie Kitchen back at Brigance,it's amazing how many cars we sold there,I can recall selling my share of muscle cars.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Here is a really cool and rare piece of Fencl Tufo memorabilia. This is the ORIGINAL paperwork from Yenko Chevrolet to Fencl Tufo for the 1970 Yenko Deuce Nova known as "the Draggin Deuce." The car has not been found to our knowledge as of yet. Featured is the original Yenko invoice, carbon copy of the window sticker, and not shown is a special dealer card from Don Yenko to Yenko dealers. Also the blue thing is a "slide" from Fencl Tufo's slide board that they used to keep track of the dealers inventory. On back in pencil is the dealers cost of the car so the salesman knew where he was working from so the place could make a profit.

A few more "North Ave.Nice Guys" items to add, that I've picked up over the years..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20001.jpg An NOS lighter still in the box from Audie Kitchens' desk,(Now w/Fencl-Tufo) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20002.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20003.jpg Very hard to find-(or eat today)-circa 1970 Chevrolet Bowtie jelly candy that came from there. These are difficult to find cause all the salesmen ate them up. Also a "Friends" glass from there too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20004.jpg A set of Champagne glasses that an old parts counterman gave me from there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20005.jpg This 4 page flyer is from 1987 I believe.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20006.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20008.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20007.jpg A unique set of NOS sequential numbered golfballs, still in their original 1970 boxes w/phone #. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20009.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...fencl20011.jpg I have some vintage sign lights that came from Fencl-Tufos' Showroom & Parts Dept.,and three,(1968 gold & 69 orange & 70 blue),Chevrolet Salesmens' polyester suit coats that came from there too,but they only have the Chevrolet year logo on them, nothing to really identify they came from there.. |

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
It's interesting to see all of these posts about Fencl-Tufo and Brigance Chevrolet. Many car dealers sprouted from Dick Fencl Chevrolet. Here's some history. Dick Fencl started with Fencl Chevrolet in the 50's, then he brought in a partner by the Name of Pierce when he took a position with Greyhound Corporation. When he left Greyhound and bought out Pierce and Ralph Bogan, one of the founders of Greyhound joined him in the new partnership. Dick Fencl later bought out Bogan and then the store was named Dick Fencl Chevrolet. He also put his brother Ray in business with a Ford Dealership and his brother in law in business with Dick Z. Lincoln Mercury. During the 60's Dick Fencl Chevy was the number one seller of Corvettes in the Chicago Zone. As far as total sales, the Number 1 spot was rotated between Z-Frank, Brigance, Fencl and Nickey. They were the top Chevy dealers in the Chicago Zone. Z Frank did some Hi-Pro sales and Nickey, of course, the "The Purple People Eaters" that raced at Road America and Meadow Dale Raceway.
At this time Maury Ettleson was the Office Manager of Dick Fencl Chevy and Al Piemonte was the New Car Manager. Maury and Al left to buy Glenbrook Ford in Libertyvile. Then Al and Maury sold Glenbrook Ford and opened Al Piemonte Ford in Melrose Park. Maury Ettleson wanted to get back in the Chevy business and he purchased a Chevy store in Elmhurst along with Dick Fencl and Nick Celozzi, who was the New Car Sales Manager at Al Piemonte Ford. That, of course, became Celozzi-Ettleson Chevrolet. Johny Tufo was the Used Car Manager at Dick Fencl Chevrolet and he partnered with Dick Fencl to start Fencl-Tufo Chevrolet in Glendale. Johny brought several salesmen from Brigance Chevrolet and got into the high performance business. After the riots in 1968, business slowed down for both Brigance and Dick Fencl in Oak Park and in 1969 Dick Fencl closed his Madison Ave. Store and Brigance lasted another year or so. |
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Welcome aboard "Fencl". Thanks for the hx lesson!

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Whatever happened to the C/E dealership in Elmhurst? I believe there is now an Ettelson Cadillac but at what location?
My family bought a 74 Chevelle wagon and a 74 Chevelle coupe there brand new. Jake |
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
The Ettelson Cadillac dealership is at the intersection of LaGrange Road (45) and Joliet Road in Countryside, IL.
|
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Isn't that really Hodgkins?
Lotsa memories from that place.. I remember driving by there as we were coming home from Countyline Pizza on a Fall Sunday evening sometime during late 1971,and my Dad jumping on frontage rd.to get a better look at the new '72's.He was eyeing this 2dr. Chevelle, but my Mom steered him towards the wagons..We eventualy bought a Kingswood from them. I met Nicks Celozzi's kid there once during the early 80's as he was an aspiring young actor.I think he appeared on the A Team,or some TV production. He tried to sell me a Blazer & was signing autographs too...no waiting. |
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Wasn't sure if it was Hodgkins or Countryside. I remember going to Celozzi Ettelson Chevrolet In Elmhurst "where you always save more money" in the summer of 79 with my friend Mike and his Dad. His Dad bought him a brand new 79 Z28 for his High School graduation present. He still has the car.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
C/E closed down around 2000. It was Elmhurst Chevy for a few more years until they moved down the street to become Villa Park Chevrolet, now Castle Chevrolet. The building was vacant for a little bit after that until it was bought by the Elmhurst Hospital and demolished.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Maury Ettleson sold his interest to Nick Celozzi and the new Business Manager the Nick brought in cleaned him out of $7,000,000 and that's how Nick lost the place. It's a shame because Nick ran the cleanest and best sales force in the USA.
|
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Maury Ettleson's son, Mike, owns the Cadillac dealership.
|
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Hey Fencl, I work with George Fencl, his father is Dick Fencl's cousin. I suppose you are related ? Also, I saw Nick Celozzi at DuPage Chrysler Jeep in Wheaton when I was in there a few weeks ago. Not sure what his position is with the dealership.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
I own a car from Dick Fencl Chevy in Oak Park, Il. My question is was Fencl-Tufo Chevy in Glendale Heights and the Oak Park location open at the same time. Also when did the Oak Park location close. My car was delivered 4/29/69.
|
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Was there a Fencl-Tufo in Oak Park Il?
|
Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Steve, I think I mentioned in our e-mail correspondence that the dealerships merged. I think I wrote somewhere in one of these old threads about Mr. Ed that Dick Fencl Chevrolet in Oak Park stayed open until 1970 I believe.

Re: Fencil Tuffo and Berganse Chevrolet
Hi All,
What's the likelihood of finding any documentation for a 71 Corvette purchased from Fencl-Tufo? I just got my shipping data report from the NCRS which indicates it was delivered to Fencl-Tufo. VIN #194371S115818. TIA. |
Re: Fencl Tufo and Brigance Chevrolet
Ray Fencl, my namesake and Uncle, was my Dads (Dick Fencl) brother and a partner in Fencl-Tufo Chevrolet.

Re: Fencl Tufo and Brigance Chevrolet
Welcome aboard Ray, tell us more. You must have some great stories to share. Glad to have you aboard.
