I am sure the car has other grease pencil marks on the firewall but I do know the car does have a very faint M22 next to the green PBT above the firewall seam above heater box and a BLK for tuxedo Black and X6 for X66 behind the distributor area of the firewall.

i might have missed it somewhere, but what was the story of the original owner not driving it much and preserving it so well?

Congratulations to the original owner /caretaker and to Doug for sharing the car and participating in our intense Vintage Certification program.

I was honoured to be part of this judging team. They let me do the recording stuff like body, window, seatbelt codes, rims tires and the like.
At one point on Friday there were 19 people underneath that car, looking, taking photos etc….we were ready to call the fire Marshall.

L-78 car

Another great piece of American Chevy Muscle! By Mr. Perry!!! Congratulation's BBBenny:eek2::eek2:

dykstra 11-22-2022 12:15 PM

This car was insane! Thanks again for bringing it to the best muscle car show in the world.

Steve and the judging team

Hats off to Steve and the Judging team! I am very partial to Doug’s L78, but the group of car that Steve found and put together for the Vintage Certification is incredible. Steve was also very accommodating to the crowd, putting Doug’s car up in the air numerous time for pictures.

For me, the Vintage Certification is always the highlight of the show!

HuggerSS 11-22-2022 12:37 PM

Doug’s car did not receive the heavy duty curved neck radiator even though it is a 4:10 car. According to Steve S, 02D was to early and transition period for the radiator late April/May and early cars were white and later came with red. All of this information is documented on the build sheet.
Another interesting fact about Dougs’s car, it was ordered with Z28 F41 suspension which included 4 leaf springs and Z28 coded shocks. It was also ordered with fast ratio manual steering. Lastly it was ordered without a heater, but new requirements for windshield defrost in 1969 mandated the heater.

It was great getting to know the original owner John over the last several years and working with Doug to acquire this car.
In November of 1968, John originally ordered a black JL8 Z28 that never came in. In January, he switched his order to the L78.
The reason the car was not driven, John is a devoted father, husband and grandfather. He always told me that family and work took priority in his life and he really did not have time to enjoy the car as much as he liked. John, also like the preservation of the car. He acquired numerous hard to find NOS parts over the years thinking one day he may restore the car. We are all happy that day never came!

bulletpruf 11-22-2022 12:54 PM

What an incredible car!!! Thanks for all the details and pictures!

Luvchevs 11-22-2022 01:00 PM

HuggerSS thanks for the information. For what purpose did he originally order the car ie: racing, daily driver, Sunday driver, collector/investment car?

HuggerSS 11-22-2022 10:49 PM

I am only assuming John bought the car to race and have fun with. That being said, the car still retains its original tires from day one with very little tire wear.

Those tire would have been bald in for first week if it were me.

Talking with John, he always knew the car was special. I think he treated the car accordingly.
Because John had the insight, we are all now able to benefit from this time capsule!

napa68 11-23-2022 12:45 PM

I know the car had camera's all over it for the weekend. Is there anyone who is going to make the detail pics available as resource?

Certainly the car is a benchmark for originality and authenticity (to say nothing for being so damn cool). It would be an ongoing benefit to the hobby if the details were accessible IMO.

Well done Doug!

Edgemontvillage, Lloyd Costley is the official photographer for Vintage Certification. He took between 1500-2000 photos of all the cars in VC that get turned over to Steve Shauger. Reach out to both to see what can be shared.

Not quite Lee. It seems early built cars came with white stripes and later built received red stripes. Not sure of the switch over.

Did Chevy make the stripe color change from white to red on the Maroon SS cars at the same time it did on the Black cars?

Lynn 12-01-2022 11:08 PM

Seems odd that it has a rear spoiler and no front spoiler. Dealer installed?

R68GTO 12-02-2022 12:28 AM

I was told it was added by the owner.

Anybody have a picture of the window sticker? ...Thank you, Joe

turbo69bird 12-02-2022 03:51 AM

This car is amazing hoping we get pics all up around the back sides of rear 1/4s , tail light panel , backs of fenders, full floor pan shots etc . All the areas that get forgotten in pics. Even things like fuse box under dash etc. So great to see this car.

Here is a picture of the window sticker that was on his show sign. Sorry for the quality. It's a picture of a picture.

I am looking forward to seeing Doug’s black 375 hp again at the Camaro Nationals. It is probably one of the best reference cars out there, I have a list of pictures that I want to take that I forgot to snap in Chicago. It should be one of the highlights at this years Nationals!

Congratulations Doug Perry for scoring a 99% in the Vintage Legends Certification Class at the Camaro Nationals. This car is truly a benchmark time capsule!

As you know this car was Vintage Certified and achieved Time Capsule at MCACN. I had mentioned previously Vintage Certification would be participating again at the Camaro Nationals this year.
It seemed logical to provide a special Camaro survivor award, within the Legend program, hence the Legend Survivor. To participate in Legend Survivor a car must achieve Vintage Time Capsule.

Doug Perry's 69 SS Camaro L78 was awarded Legend Survivor Platinum with an overall score of 99. This car has set the bar by achieving and awarded top honors in both formats.
The Judging team consisted of Steve Shauger, Bob Harris, John Pollock & Josh Harris(tabulator).

The following car were Vintage Certified at the Camaro Nationals:

69 Z28-Benny Pfeiffer awarded Reference, Overall 86.5
69 Z28-Mitch Stamos awarded Heritage, Overall 90.9
71 Z28 Eric Winkel, awarded Participant, Overall 66.2
74 Z28 Nate Bailey, awarded Legend, Overall 93.7

It seems like Vintage Certification and Legends Survivor Certification go together like “Peas and Carrots”. We are very humbled to achieve Time Capsule and Survivor Platinum with this special car. This was all made possible by the original owner. Kuddos to him and his wife for their preservation of this fine car. The judging in both Chicago and Morgantown is not for the faint of heart but the team is fair and precise on every detail nose to tail. The bar has been raised by all the participants and caliber of cars .

Amazing car! But there has to be a better analogy than "peas and carrots". I mean, peanut butter and jelly, bread and butter, ice and cream!

Seriously, congrats on a great achievement!!
